Vipre and new Counterspy 3.1.2315 compatible with Thunderbird?
Vipre and new Counterspy 3.1.2315 compatible with Thunderbird? Very slow response to open anything. All is good when disabled. Tried disabling the email scanner in Vipre--no change. Had updated Kerio (SPF) to newest version before installing and had uninstalled Counterspy before installing Vipre.
Uninstalled Vipre and reinstalled new version of Counterspy, and then had same problem with email response so slow it was unbearable. Exit Counterspy and again, email just fine.
BTW, first scan with Vipre wiped out all my email--had to establish "new" account in Thunderbird and then import original mailbox, but all settings and filters are gone.
No problems for two years of using the products, so was excited by all the good reviews of Vipre and had been looking for AVG alternative to new version 8 (I did uninstall that too before Vipre), so am frustrated to the max.

Inappropriate?I have this problem too. Its far less if I enable email scanning (though because I use imap and smtp over ssl I doubt its actually doing anything).
Adding thunderbird.exe to the allow list didn't make any difference. In the task manager, SBAMSvc.exe shows as 49% (on a core 2 duo) and thunderbird freezes until the cpu usage drops down again.
I’m very frustrated
-
Inappropriate? The same thing happens on another machine in the household where I installed it. That was a fresh XP re-install. fwiw.
-
Inappropriate?I'm sorry for the problems you're experiencing.
Try turning off VIPREs Active Protection completely and see if everything settles down. Let me know the result.
Regards,
Jason Layman -
After turning off Active Protection, everything operated as normal with no freezes or lockups. -
Inappropriate?Under the Active Protection settings, change the AP option to "Custom" then click on "Custom Risk Monitor Settings." At the bottom, change "Running Programs" to disabled, then hit Ok, and then Apply on the next prompt. Now try Thunderbird again.

This didn't work for me either. I am extremely frustrated, borderline angry about this. I can't use Thunderbird at all right now. The last time I tried to, it started up reading that I had 534 emails in my inbox when, in reality, I only have about 50. -
Disable VIPREs Active Protection and it should enable Thunderbird to work properly. -
Jason, surely you do not recommend that as a solution, just a temporary workaround, right? Please tell us your developers are busy fixing this bug right now. -
Inappropriate? This seems to stop the problem from happening ... though I'm guessing I don't want to leave it this way all the time as it seems all the other settings are "Allow and don't tell me"
-
Inappropriate?Nope, doing the Custom changes to Running Programs doesn't stop the problem. I had to disable Vipre Active Protection again to avoid it happening while I'm trying to do email.

Inappropriate?Since upgrading to 2315 yesterday as part of the process of troubleshooting the long weekend lack of Sunbelt updates, I have also noted a slow down in the operation of Thunderbird. This has occurred only since the 2315 update.
Have no details at this time ... just wanted to add my concurrence that something is amiss.

Hi OzziBob - I've had the same problem. Since updating to Vipre 3.1.2315, Thunderbird took 3 seconds to do anything, even to delete a message. I'm back to NOD 32 for a while until things settle down with Vipre. I really like Vipre when it works, but unfortunately that has been a issue with me. -
Inappropriate? It looks like we are going to need to get more information so we can see what may be causing this. Please contact our support department and we will have someone work one-on-one with you guys. support@sunbelt-software.com or call 877-673-1153 m-f, 9am-6pm, est.

Started using Outlook Express today. It runs just fine. It must be that Vipre and Thunderbird are not compatable. Will continue using Outlook til Vipre comes out with a fix for Thunderbird -
East coast Australia is 13 Hrs ahead of Florida ... your support hours don't suit international customers. Nor does the call costs. In this case, I'm happy to set up for you to call me anytime to discuss, or I will provide whatever requested via e-mail et al.
My Thunderbird has 3 Pop3 accounts on one local ISP mail server, and one account on Google (Imap). The slow down affects loading and sending emails, deleting, moving ... almost everything it does. Had not happened with previous versions of Vipre. -
Any progress on this? -
Inappropriate?Has anyone at sunbelt installed Thunderbird using IMAP and tried this? I've repro'd this on two machines. I'd rather not call and work on this with support until someone has tried it and failed to reproduce it. It was simple to reproduce on both machines I tried. I'm happy to email a log/setup/debug file from my machine if that would help.
The freshly reformatted machine that saw this problem was setup as follows:
+ install thunderbird
+ configure thunderbird to use a Gmail account (under create new account, gmail) - make sure gmail is configured to allow IMAP
+ confirm thunderbird works
+ install Vipre
-> try to use thunderbird with task manager running and see how thunderbird freezes and CPU jumps to 100%. -
Inappropriate? If you could, can you email those logs to us at support@sunbelt-software.com. I'm trying to repro this with IMAP.
Thank,
Jason Layman -
Which logs would you like? -
Problem seems to be worse when using TB local folders and especially if they are large. So keep this in mind when trying to repro the problem... -
I turned off "check files when they are opened or copied" in AP. That certainly sped up TB to it's old rate. Bearing in mind the JRK comment re large local folders, could it be that the 2315 version AP is checking all files in a folder rather than just the file in question? Just a thought.
Ciao ... -
I copied OzziBob's method and unchecked "Check files when they are opened or copied." This eliminated all the slowdowns.
I took at look at the advanced settings under this option, with a view to possibly turning off scanning of the files that Thunderbird uses. What I found was that the Thunderbird indexes, .msf, files are not on the list, so those are probably okay. For storing the e-mails themselves, Thunderbird uses files with no extensions. Unfortunately, that isn't visible as an option on the list of extensions. My guess is that version 3.1.2315 added scanning of files with no extensions.
Before turning off the "check files when they are opened or copied" option, I did some experimenting. I found slowdowns in the following circumstances:
1. Opening a new message that hadn't been read
2. Deleting a message
3. Moving a message to another folder
4. Setting a read message back to unread
However, reopening a previously read message was usually not slow.
What all of the slowdowns have in common is that they change the contents of one or more mail files.
Given that, I started experimenting with different size mail files. I compared the same actions in mail files of 3MB and 296MB. In at least the open new message, delete and moving to a new folder cases, the differences in slowdowns were very noticeably longer with the larger file. For looking at new message and moving a message to a similarly sized file, the 3MB folder didn't have much of a noticeable delay. (Deleting did, but that is because the Trash folder is 66MB.)
So for now, the best work-around seems to be unchecking the "check files when they are opened or copied" option in the Active Protection settings. Longer term, Vipre needs to have another option in the Advanced settings that either allows excluding Thunderbird files in particular or excluding files that have no file extension. -
Well done that man Ed! -
Inappropriate?I have try to apply this " Under the Active Protection settings, change the AP option to "Custom" then click on "Custom Risk Monitor Settings." At the bottom, change "Running Programs" to disabled, then hit Ok, and then Apply on the next prompt. Now try Thunderbird again."
but no result, my thuderbird seems freeze and after so slow !
I have bought this antivirus because all magazines said that it is speeder than all others now I'm really disappointed !
I don't want to use Outlook at all, what can I do now ?
I’m Snail87

Inappropriate? Now my pb is resolved :
1 : desinstallation of Vipre and Thunderbird
2 : restart Windows
3 : Installation of Vipre /restart / Update and configuration
4 : Installation of Thunderbird
No more freeze
-
Tried that, doesn't work for me. Maybe I should have downgraded Vipre to previous version... This is really annoying! -
Inappropriate?I also have the issue which you describe here. I tried Vipre, uninstalled it because of repeated blue screen crashes, reverted back to CounterSpy (now version 3.1.2315) and now when I open Thunderbird I takes longer to check my email than before I got RoadRunner over 10 years ago.
"...SBAMSvc.exe shows as 49% (on a core 2 duo) and thunderbird freezes until the cpu usage drops down again. " ... exactly the same on my HP dualcore.
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Well, I was going to try to reinstall either or both Vipre and newest Counterspy and send in some logs, etc., but already went through that last weekend with both (to include uninstalling my 2.x v. of Counterspy and Kerio and installing the newest versions of everything). Seeing that nothing seems to be resolved by settings changes, etc., I'm afraid I am going to wait for an update that resolves Thunderbird compatibility as I don't have enough hours during the week to get things back to "normal."
I doubt it's me, since I've been using the products since first released and never had anything but a great experience. I'm using the SPF and free Avast for the time being (Avast is on the list of compatible anti virus to use with TB). I know both are great products and the reviews on other sites are outstanding, but for now, I guess that's only if you don't use Thunderbird.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I just upgraded Vipre to build 3.1.2315, and also see the incredible slowdown of Thunderbird. I do not remember experiencing this with the previous build I was running (I don't remember the build number). This is very frustrating, I had been running Vipre for a while now and it had solved several slowdown issues that I had with Counterspy, but now this.
I would downgrade Vipre to the previous build, but I didn't keep a copy.
I’m frustrated

I'm having this exact same issue, but with Mozilla SeaMonkey email, which is a sibling of Mozilla Thunderbird. Support has also asked me to uninstall and re-install, with no change. Now they're telling me to turn off Active Protection, which rather seems to me to be reducing the protection that I've paid for when I bought Vipre.
Like with your problem, Mozilla SeaMonkey worked fine before a recent update to Vipre. I've told support this fact twice, but it doesn't seem to have changed the canned responses of "re-install", then "turn off Active Protection".
I wonder whether one of the other posters might have hit upon the problem when he wondered if Vipre is now handling files without an extension differently - Thunderbird, Mozilla SeaMonkey email and Netscape all handle email the same way, and store the email in files without an extension.
Peter -
Well Peter, I've never had a re-install of any program ever fix a problem, but the tech support people always want us to try it for some strange reason. After the problems with automatic updates and then making Thunderbird useless, their recommendation to turn off active protection was the last straw. I did do a re-install, but it was to put back my previous anti-malware program. I'd like to come back to Vipre someday, but I'll wait until more of the bugs are worked out, I just don't have time to waste right now. The developers at Sunbelt seem like they really want to help, I'll give them credit for that, but it looks like they have a lot of issues to sort out and it will take them a while. Good luck to those of you who stick with it and help them fine tune their product. -
Inappropriate?I did uninstall and reinstall Thunderbird to no avail. However, when I turned off the automatic settings for checking email on the servers and instead only check them manually, I had no problem. I currently have active protection enabled and can open and check mail through Thunderbird with no slow down at all. Again, I do not have Thunderbird set up to check for mail upon start-up or at pre-set time periods. I only check for mail on the servers manually. So far, so good. (BTW - I check email from comcast and gmail).
-
Kelly, this might be a good clue for the developers. I noticed my Laptop didn't seem to have a slow down with Thunderbird. I had transferred all the same email to it from my desktop with Mozbackup, and the only change I made was to check email manually. I would verify this for you, but I uninstalled Vipre because it seemed to be causing problems with my wireless connection on boot up (another nail in the coffin).
Good luck, that may be a good work around for now. -
Inappropriate?I'm having this problem too, since the VIPRE upgrade. Looks like the problem is approaching 3 weeks old? The fix suggested by max air
(changing to manual mailcheck) does not work for us, not even on
new emails (received after manual check activated). Sigh. And, I agree,
turning active protection off means we're not getting what we paid for
and are depending on. Really frustrating. I'm glad we didn't upgrade
until fairly recently.
btw, there was a possibly related phenomenon that I got on one of our
PC's when I upgraded: The install file seemed really sticky. That is,
if I right-clicked on it, it might take up to 20 seconds for the menu to show.
Same with then clicking on properties, or trying to copy or move.
Support had no idea what might be going on.
I also had trouble on both of our computers when allowing the upgrade
that was offered. The solution ultimately was to uninstall VIPRE altogether
and download a fresh install file. (That was the install file that I referred
to in the foregoing.) It would be nice to get a progress report
or fresh tip from support in this thread. Sigh.
I’m frustrated n worn

Inappropriate?Sorry everyone is having this problem. I can assure you we are working on getting everything with Thunder Bird squared away. Until then Try this; Go to “File” in the top left hand corner of the VIPRE window and select “Settings”. Go to the Active Protection tab and uncheck the “Check Files When Opened and Copied” box. Please write me back and let me know how this works for you. Ive tried this a few times and it seems to speed up email usage with Thunder Bird.

Inappropriate?Good of Bryan to visit this thread, and the main thing is that the fix should be a good one when Sunbelt completes it, but this is dragging on. Bryan's suggestion is what OzziBob introduced and EdwardS discussed quite some time ago, i.e., disable the "check files when they are opened or copied". I do not think this is any better than disabling Active Protection. They are different. Disabling the "check files" either takes a lot of clicking and waiting each time you reset it, or you NEVER check files when they are opened, if you just set it and forget it. If you have nothing but Thunderbird open when you're dealing with mail, two clicks will disable Active Protection and two will re-enable it when you're done, and you're fully protected for all your other activities. So, the second way seems better to me, to the best of my understanding, and for how we use the computer (where it's pretty easy to have times when only TB is being used, and the rest of the times it's not being used at all).
PS -- In reply to Bryan's request: Yes, of course, when files are not checked when opened or copied, the slowdowns and freezes do not happen.
IN SUM: Both workarounds aren't happy ones, but if you intend to use one, consider which one suits. -
Inappropriate?Leaving "Check files when they are being opend or copied" unchecked solves the sluggishness of the Thunderbird email client.
I’m waiting for real solution
-
Inappropriate?Come on ... its been a month now!
Nod32 never had these problems and it had many of the features of VIPRE anti-virus, e.g.:
* fast
* small
* very highly rated for its protection
I feel like I'm being ripped off when the solution is "turn off checking of files when they're opened or copied". Isn't that the whole point?
I’m getting sick of waiting.

Inappropriate?Good news! In a different thread
(http://getsatisfaction.com/sunbeltsof... )
the good Sunbelt folks have offered a real solution:
Download and run www.sunbelt-software.com/ihs/vctu.exe ,
and the fix will be included in the next build of VIPRE too.
I’m happy, thankful and relieved
