Vipre blocking POP3 email
I recently started a trial of Vipre Enterprise. Currently the server is at 3.1.2986 and the agent version is 2434. I have Outlook 2007 on both XP SP3 and Vista SP1 clients. Outlook accesses an Exchange mailbox _and_ a couple of POP3 mailboxes.
Starting sometime on March 5 or 6, Vipre began blocking POP3 and SMTP on the XP box only. The Send/Receive would time out, and outbound messages just stayed in the Outbox. Exchange mail was coming in and going out fine. When I unchecked "Enable protection for other email clients" in the relevant Vipre policy, I started getting the POP3 mail again, and I was again able to send mail (SMTP) from the secondary accounts.
How do I get Vipre to scan the POP3 accounts without shutting them down?
Mark

Inappropriate? This might have to do with VIPRE's recent problem's that came up
with 5024 or so. I don't have the enterprise version. But, recently
some of us have been having mail port assignment problems, and
also CPU overload (when VIPRE does checking of newly opened
or copied files, see file/settings/active protection/check files when...).
Posts are scattered over several threads here, and staff responses
don't seem to be adequate and complete yet, to my mind.
The "default hunch" might be that VIPRE is taking so long that
there's a timeout, when you check your mail, and VIPRE is super busy checking something. One solution that was proposed: going back
to definitions 5022. There was a lnk to instructions in one thread.
What was not mentioned is that then you have to make sure that
you have no updating, and there was no staff response to the fact
that in the past it didn't take too long for VIPRE to stop functioning
altogether, claiming that your definitions were too out-of-date.
The hope is that this will all be solved (providing that you're being hit
by what's hitting the rest of us who have posted) by some definition
set, when Sunbelt gets it figured out. But no time span or any
relevant clue as to it has thus far been offered. -
Inappropriate? That might explain why the mail problem was only on my (older, slower) XP machine, not on Vista. It seems to be taking longer to open programs (e.g. Firefox, QuickBooks) since switching to Vipre from NOD32 2.7. Vipre's "quick scan" basically disables the PC for 10-15 minutes, so I have to make sure that is scheduled when I'm not working.
-
Inappropriate?Mark: I use Vista and have never had to avoid quick scans! I think something is wrong with your set-up. Maybe this is related to the problem Gideon, I and others have been having? to check, look in Task Manager with all users showing (Vipre is run under System) and look in processes at the CPU demand of SBAMSvc.exe. One work-around is to set Vipre scans to "lower priority", which on my (dual core) machine limits SBAMSvc.exe to about 50% of CPU time.
-
Inappropriate? Thanks Roger. I have quick scans set to Lowest Priority. It's not just the CPU usage, which I seem to recall was under 50%; it also seems to be thrashing the disk so madly that nothing else can run. And yes, it's better on my Vista machine, probably because that's a faster machine.
-
Inappropriate?Since definitions 5029 seems to solve the
CPU saturation problem --- assuming that
it does for everyone --- the timeouts should
not be happening anymore. I hope that's
true for you. -
Inappropriate?Definition release 5031 has resolved the high CPU usage issue. If you are still experiencing this problem, please contact us and let us know.

-
Inappropriate? Thanks Jeff. I turned "Enable protection for other email clients" back on last night and I'm still getting mail this morning, so it look like this has been resolved.
-
Inappropriate?Excellent Mark. Please let us know if you run into any further issues. We are constantly adding new threats signatures into the database, and are always trying to improve our processes to keep our customers as happy as possible. Unfortunately we do run into problems sometimes, but we try to remedy them immediately.
Thanks for your continued support of Sunbelt!
I’m happy

Inappropriate?I find that I still cannot either send or receive email through gmail when email protection is enabled on its (secure) ports.
-
Inappropriate?Hello Roger, what email client are you using the send and receive email?
-
Inappropriate?Hi Peterh: I am using Thunderbird with POP and SMTP.
-
Inappropriate?Roger,
At the moment, we don't support using SSL in Thunderbird because of the way Thunderbird encrypts email. The problem may be that you're using SSL with the Gmail account. -
Shouldn't this only affect SMTP, but not affect POP?
(If that's so, then setting VIPRE SMTP port to 25 should make it stop interfering with the sending. It just won't check, so that others won't be protected from you.
Works for me. But, though I use TB, I don't use gmail that way --- so my experience might not apply.) -
I don't know what it "should" affect. In practice it affects both when I list in Vipre the ports used by gmail. -
Inappropriate?HI Nick
I regret (in this context) that gmail requires SSL. See http://mail.google.com/support/bin/an...
A previous comment by a Sunbelt employee indicated that a solution to this issue was imminent. Is this still the case? -
PS it would be useful, if this is solved, to have a facility to check more than one port. My other ISPs use standard (unencrypted) ports. -
Inappropriate?I'm trying an evaluation version with Outlook 2003 and whilst I continue to receive email because my mail account (Gmail) settings are set for an encrypted connection, because I cannot set VIPRE email settings to encrypt SSL, I assume my incoming and outgoing mail is not being scanned?
Am I correct and has this been resolved in the latest paid verion?
Thanks in advance
Darryl
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?Darrylp,
If you have Email Protection enabled and set for Outlook then it should be scanning the emails. VIPRE's Email Protection supports SSL with Outlook and Outlook Express. -
Inappropriate?Thanks very much Nick
I think I've resolved the issue in my email.
Regards
Darryl
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I have exactly the same symptoms (and work around) with Mozilla email products as well as with my SPAM filtering program MailWasher Pro. It happens about once every 10-15 times I start a download of email or send a message. It is very frustrating. It started with the "new" core program. Once either of these programs hangs, it remains hung until it is terminated and restarted.
The claims about an unobtrusive anti-malware program used to be true. Now VIPRE is definitely a huge resource hog. Probably the worst offense, other than email, is with Adobe Acrobat when creating new pdf files. These eventually complete, but it takes forever. -
Inappropriate?Hello Rod, we are still working to ensure that Vipre works correctly with email applications including programs like Thunderbird. We have been working to have these these fixes to be included in a new software version that is in development.
If you have any other questions please let us know.
Thanks,
Peter. -
Inappropriate? While you are working on version 3, why do you not go back to the version of VIPRE before January? You used to have a great program which met the challenges of your advertisements. Then you pulled the Micro$oft trick and came up with an "upgrade" that is pitiful in comparison.
-
Inappropriate?Rod,
We did resolve a number of issues that were prevalent with the latest software version. Im sorry your still having problems with Vipre, if you would like to contact us directly at support@sunbeltsoftware.com we can create a support ticket.
We do still use a lot less CPU and memory then many other security programs with the newest version.
If you have any questions please let us know.
Thanks,
peter
