Vipre conflict with Thunderbird
Running Vipre 3.1.2483 Def 5022. All running great. Downloaded Defs 5023 & 5024 last night. Now Thunderbird runs super slow.Sbamsvc.exe using 99% CPU. Fixed that by unchecking "Check files when they are opened. Deep scan will not run. Hangs at eight minutes into scan. This is the exact same problem I had on Feb tenth. This is the third major problem I've had in only six months. I've about had it with Vipre,

Inappropriate?Rick, we are currently investigating the cause of this, you can go back to a previous definition 5022 by downloading the that definition version and following the steps on the following page,
http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Home-H... -
I had the same problem (Thunderbird froze + 100% CPU usage) with the latest definition (5024). As you suggested I went back to 5022 and it's all working fine now. But surely this is a temporary arrangement...since Vipre users also need to cancel automatic updates (which you did not mention). This is the second time in the last 6 months that Vipre has had a conflict with Thunderbird...not good! -
Inappropriate?I had the same problem today with definitions 5024 and Thunderbird. Sorted (at least temporarily) by turning off "Check files when they are opened or copied" (under Active Protection) and also by setting scans to lower priority. I don't think the problem was confined to TB. Am awaiting a response to my e-mail to Sunbelt support.

Inappropriate?OK Vipre. Three major problems in six months is too many . I give up. I surrender. Uncle. I really like Vipre's premise. Someday it may be a great program, but not today.I have removed Vipre from my system.
-
Inappropriate?I just noticed this problem had (re)appeared today when downloading my email. Getting a sense of deja-vu here.
-
Inappropriate?I removed the work-around mentioned above in order to run Sunbelt's diagnostic (thanks Sunbelt for the e-mail reply). Now with definitions 5026 the problem remains.
I have taken the opportunity to enable e-mail scanning, previously disabled because of inordinate delays. Perhaps with the work-around it will work better.
-
Inappropriate?I'm having this problem as well. Worse yet, somehow I permanently lost three e-mail folders as a result last night. Nothing in quarantine; they just got eaten alive. I've gone through every possibility with Thunderbird. Just decided to google the problem and found this. Will try the work around, but I'll never get those mail files back, sadly. My first problem with VIPRE, but it's a biggie. Thanks.
-
Sorry to hear of your problem with Vipre,Unfortunately it's probably not your last. In my estimation Vipre is a bummer. I uninstalled Vipre three hours ago and my computer has never run better. -
Inappropriate?Julia, I posted about a more extreme case in the following thread:
http://getsatisfaction.com/sunbeltsof...
Try this and see if it helps you recover those folders (it worked for me):
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtop... -
Inappropriate? Thanks matt. I was compacting when the system hung up, and I shut down Thunderbird. When I reopened, the folders were gone, only 3 out of many, not only from Thunderbird, but from my profile folder, msf files and all. Nothing in VIPRE quarantine. No nstmp file in my profile folder either.
I’m sad
-
That stinks. :-( Have you tried something like GetDataBack or Recuva to get them back? I don't know if they're that important or if it would even work in this situation. -
Thanks matt. I just tried Recuva, since I know the file names. GetDataBack looks more complicated than I can handle. I'll miss the e-mails, but think I can survive. -

Inappropriate?I had same problem. I re-set up my email accounts in TBird then manually pointed the account (by browsing) back to the original mail folders. My mail is back! Actually it was never gone... I just couldn't get it.
Right now I have Vipre turned off. It is the only way my computer is functional. This is a huge bummer since it worked great... UNTIL I paid for it! I even bought a site license. Boy do I regret it. Can I get my money back?
I’m really, really bummed.
-
I didn't lose all of my mail. Just three folders worth. All the rest were still there. That's the good news. The bad is that those three couldn't be recovered. Sigh.
I'm not going to jump all over VIPRE yet--I've had lots of hassles with other anti-Virus programs, and VIPRE has been great for me, until now. I hope they can solve this one. -
Inappropriate?Oh... one difference for me was that I was not compacting mail folders at the time. Everything just crashed because my system resources were all tied up with Vipre.
I’m still bummed
-
Inappropriate? This is rediculous. Still no answers. I have 4 computers that are worthless. And I'd like to know how you're supposed to go back to the old defs when the CPU is at 100%. Back to McAfee for me. 10 years with them and never had problems like these. We were going to purchase the enterpise edtion but I can't afford to have 1500 computers down and no support.
I’m Angry

Inappropriate?Jim from Chicago
I have wasted nearly the whole day with this problem on my machine, too. It originally started yesterday morning when my deep scan hung up and would not complete. I talked to Peter at Sunbelt and he had me run a deep scan in Safe Mode. That went fine.
All the other programs worked fine until I opened Thunderbird. Then everything ran super slow and eventually froze up each time I opened Thunderbird. No excuse for this. I had problems with Thunderbird and Vipre just after I got Vipre shortly after it was introduced. This conflict should have been worked out by now.
I’m frustrated and angry
-
The conflict with Thunderbird appears to be fixed with 5030 update. The deep scan that was scheduled for Sunday morning did not happen. Waiting to see if the auto scan takes place Monday morning. -
Inappropriate? My work around is still working (SBAMSvc.exe now only takes 50% of CPU time) but I have again had to disable e-mail checking. Vipre effectively stopped my downloading anything.
-
Inappropriate?Ok, Vipre is looking lousy. What do you folks suggest at the alternative? AVG, Norton's, CA, or what?
I have had to disable Viper just to get here.
Thanks.
I’m very dissatisfied.
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem (CPU waterlogged). In addition, I had been told
to uninstall and reinstall VIPRE (etc.), and nothing helped. Short of killing
the SBAMSvc.exe process, or having VIPRE not check files when opened.
And, in addition, on at least one of the two afflicted PC's the SMTP port assignment doesn't work properly, so there's a problem sending mail from Thunderbird. (SMTP uses port 25 is the venerable standard, but 587 is
the alternative that is less subject to spam and intrustions, and is the only
setting that works in my rural wireless ISP, independent of routing.)
Thunderbird isn't all that's affected, but Thunderbird is particularly bad.
I hope I don't have to dump VIPRE, I've liked the program and some of
the folks at the company are simply great! I can't hold off long though.
Oh, yes, two more things. In the middle of last week I installed the new
VIPRE (3.1.2483). And, I was told yesterday that only definitions number
5019 had a known problem. Later, I was told that there could be problems
or probably were in some of the later defs. -
Caution: I forgot to mention another consideration. If you roll back the defs to 5022, and if the behavior of VIPRE hasn't changed from what it has been for at least months, then at some point VIPRE will stop checking anything because your defs are too far out-of-date. At least, months ago I had this kind of problem and I don't know if that has been changed. -
Inappropriate?Scan with defs 5031 now seems to be working fine, even with Vipre set on lower priority. Deep scan at 0100 today took 133 minutes, compared with 457 minutes yesterday with defs 5028. May have been helped by move to software version 2483. Thank you Sunbelt.
Now just hoping for a way forward for scanning e-mails for servers (gmail in my case) using SSL and TLS.

Good. As for me, though, I'm still running into a problem with those half-gid pdf files, when I'm doing a Safe Mode deep scan. These scans used to take 2 or 3 hours. Now, I'm at the 3.5 hour mark, and the second of these files (I don't know if it handled the first, as I was not around. I revisited the computer first at the 3 hour 10 minute mark) has been in the scan at least 40 minutes. But, at least the filename is showing up in the Status line. Previously, only the folder name was showing. I'm going to give this another half hour or hour before deciding that I should count the scan as frozen. EDIT: Now, the "pause" button yields a response. That's an improvement, in addition to the filename's showing being an improvement. -
At the 4 hour 10 minute mark, I visit the computer, and the scan is now at the 3rd of those enormous pdf files. So, the final word is in. The scan isn't stuck. It's merely having a heck of a time with these particular files. The old VIPRE (before 5019, and before 5023) didn't. Of course, from a user's point of view, there's no way of telling whether this change is a pure negative or a small price to pay for a substantial improvement in the process, or what. I hope Sunbelt comments on it. NOTE: I know this thread is about TB, not about scans. But, since I mentioned the port assignment (and port filtering) problem and the scanning of the big pdf's as the residual problems that I see, I'm following that up here. Should there be real developments, a new thread would probably be in order. -
Development is still looking into the TB problems. We have a test environment set up to try to reproduce some of these issues. As for the scans getting stuck, we may need to look into that further. Please contact our support department so we can figure out what exactly is causing this behavior. support@sunbeltsoftware.com

On JasonL's comment:
To be clear, the scans are no longer getting stuck. This particular scan did finally complete. I had already indicated in the comment that JasonL was apparently responding to that it was NOT getting stuck. I wrote, "The scan isn't stuck. It's merely having a heck of a time with these particular files."
It was taking 30 to 50 minutes (several times longer than a week ago) to do a safe mode deep scan of each half gigabyte pdf file of a bilingual lexicon. Even earlier, I had written "But, at least the filename is showing up in the Status line. Previously, only the folder name was showing. I'm going to give this another half hour or hour before deciding that I should count the scan as frozen. EDIT: Now, the "pause" button yields a response. That's an improvement, in addition to the filename's showing being an improvement."
And, my guess and hope is that the slowness is due to more rigorous examination of those files, which may be complicated from the program's point of view. It would be good, though not necessary, to get Sunbelt's view of this. -
Inappropriate?Upgraded definitions to 5031 just now. Looks like peace has finally broken out between Vipre and Thunderbird...no more high CPU usage. Would have been nice to hear resolution of the problem direct from Vipre on this forum - why are they hiding?
-
Inappropriate?Sorry for the delay,
We found a VIPRE detection that was released in version 5024 that could, with some files, cause the CPU to run at 100% for very long periods of time.
This detection problem was fixed in def version 5030, which was released Saturday March 7, 2009 in the evening.
If you are still experiencing high CPU usage after updating your definitions to 5030, please contact our support department so we can look into the problem further.

Inappropriate?I had two scans that got stuck and one that did not happen at the scheduled time. With the latest updates (Def 5031), those problems seen to have been overcome.
