VIPRE ineffective at removing malware
My VIPRE anti-virus software has over recent weeks been completely ineffective at removing viruses from my computer. I update my definitions and run virus scans daily yet my computer remains infected with various viruses and malware. For example, VIPRE repeatedly sends me notices that it has blocked a program called nbbi9xp.exe yet when I scan for it VIPRE cannot detect it and therefore cannot remove it. Also over the past week VIPRE has twice detected a backdoor called Backdoor.Win32.Hupigon and both times when the scan is finally complete the backdoor no longer appears on the Clean Results page and therefore cannot be removed. Now VIPRE cannot detect it at all. Finally other people tell me that when I chat to them via MSN Live Messenger my computer sends them a virus. Despite this whenever I run a scan (of any sort) VIPRE cannot detect any viruses.
I downloaded Windows Defender as a secondary basic AV program and even it managed to remove some viruses VIPRE missed. I sent a message to support@sunbletsoftware.com on the 24th but still have not recieved any reply.
Please help.

Inappropriate? If VIPRE detects a piece of malware, then it won't come up on the scan results page, because it's already detected and blocked it.
-
Ok. Still doesn't explain why VIPRE is missing viruses even Windows Defender can pick up. -
What did Windows Defender pick up that VIPRE didn't? -
What it called Win32/PossibleHostsFileHijack. Also, I keep getting this pop-up from a Chinese website that I can't get rid of or prevent from appearing, no matter how I modify my pop-up blocker settings. I think it's the nbbi9xp.exe listed above (and previous incarnations nbbi8xp.exe and nbbi7xp.exe) because VIPRE for a while sent a message saying it prevented the program from running just when the pop-up would appear. These days I don't get the message, though. -
Inappropriate?Brett from Oz,
I'd suggest contacting support directly by sending an email to support@sunbeltsoftware.com or calling 877-673-1153. If VIPRE is missing part of the threat we can collect logs from you and have one of our malware specialists assist you with removing any traces left on the system. -
Ok, I'll do that, but last time I contacted support I never recieved a reply. -
Inappropriate?Ok, now I have more problems. Today I scanned my USB stick for viruses (which it normally has) and VIPRE came up with nothing. When I put my USB stick in one of my universities computers (running McAfee OAS) it came up with these viruses:
$LDDATA$.EXE
MS.CONFIG.EXE
RECYCLER.EXE
RM.EXE
SYSTEM.{64...}.EXE
Why is VIPRE missing viruses McAfee can trace and eliminate?
I'll send another e-mail to you guys so you can collect my logs. PLEASE RESPOND THIS TIME!!! -
Inappropriate?Brett from Oz,
It sounds like this threat is not in our threat database. Once we collect logs from you we'll have one of our malware specialists help you remove the threat. We use the information we gather during this process to update VIPRE's definitions to allow VIPRE to be able to detect and remove this threat in the future. -
Inappropriate?Brett -- you can always submit these files to response@sunbeltsoftware.com for an analysis. Simply put them in a zip file, password-protected, and they will be rapidly analyzed.
You can also submit them to VIrustotal.com to see if othes are detecting it.
Realize that false positives are rampant with all malware solutions, so it's impossible to tell what exactly is happening until we see the file(s).
