Vipre update not downloading definitions
The virus definitions don't want to update. the yellow shield appears in the task bar. I click on it and tell it to update now. It checks for new version and tells me the current version. It stops after about a second with a red circle with an X. The only option is to click OK. I assume it is an error. It is happening on both my PCs.

Inappropriate?i tried updating the version and thought my subscription ran out. I tried to turn off the firewall. I guess we will have to wait for customer service. i just can't see what's wrong.

Inappropriate?I have two machines: the laptop shows the same problem as Gerhard's but says "Out of date". The desktop shows everything is up to date BUT that the last definitions were 2429 from 26 November. Is that correct?

Inappropriate?About 10:30 AM central time my copy finally updated.

Inappropriate?Updates seem to be working now.
-
Inappropriate? My updates working now too, but my definitions are dated 11/26. That makes them 4 days old! A lot of nasties can happen in 4 days. Black Hats don't take Holidays!
I’m scared

Inappropriate?Updates are now working on both my machines so I guess that they solved the problem, whatever it was!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Thank you for posting your question. There was a problem with the server over the weekend. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Inappropriate?I installed Vipre today and cannot receive definition updates or product updates. The default definitions are from 10/28!!

I am further annoyed about this. . Vipre is a 69.9 MB download - then i discover that the virus definitions are back in october. I then try to update and get OUT OF DATE error and it refuses to update. I then performed a full refresh of the virus definitions and got the same error. Once I shutdown Vipre and restarted it i was able to download the definitions to 2441 3/12.
My point is ... why have such a large installation file when it cant even have current definitions included. Some people in Australia have miniscule monthly download limits and some are on 256Kb connections. It would be far better to have the Vipre install program go out and retrieve the latest definitions at the installation time.
I have refreshed my desktop and laptop PCs and each time, a large download is occurring.
I also have other comments about the user notifications which i will post elsewhere. -
Hi Victor,
I Apologize. The install file does contain a full set of definitions. This is why it so large. We usually try to keep these updated to a version that will allow just an incremental update after the install. This past weekend, we had a problem with our update servers. The posted definitions weren't sent out on time. The out of date warning occurred. Normally the incremental updates are only about 1MB, so they are pretty quick to download. I again apologize for any inconvenience this caused. -
Inappropriate?I was having the same problem (not updating on my XP machine since Nov 26). I uninstalled and reinstalled, and now it still won't update and my definitions are Oct 28! updates are working fine on my Vista machines (so far) it is just my main PC that is a problem (I think).

Inappropriate?I finally got it working ... but I'm not sure what did the trick. I did a system restore (Nov 19th), uninstall (and that was a chore - included deleting the Sunbelt folder from program files ... I stopped short of hacking the registry) reinstall of my original version (August-without reboot), upgrade to the October version ... reboot ... register ... update, and it worked! I don't know why ... and that is a little worrisome. Coincidence? Maybe ...
I’m undecided

Inappropriate? It took several hours, but the updates started working. Perhaps the server was down.

Inappropriate?I was stuck at Def:2435 and just now updated to Def:2437.
This afternoon I had installed this on a new customers computer, so it was embarrassing to have it fail after telling him how good the program was. You know what they say about first impressions. I was lucky enough to have a copy of my definitions folder that was current as of 11-26-08.
I shutdown vipre and dropped it into the program folder and restarted so he was at least protected to that point.
I'm going to have to check with him tomorrow and see if his machine has updated or not.
Someone from sunbelt? It would be great to get an update on the status of the server situation. At this point it seems like it's still an intermittent problem.
oh and one more thing I'm wondering here since I'm new.
I don't see any of my posts on here only everyone else's, it's ok with me but is that how it works here??

Inappropriate?Good question raised: are there ongoing server issues?
As a follow-up, is there a way to download an update manually from somewhere else if/when there are server issues? If there is, I couldn't find it, and it wasn't for a lack of looking ...

Inappropriate?I apologize for the trouble you are experiencing with the updates. Due to some software changes, we were forced to temporarily take the servers off line. To minimize the impact we took down one server at a time, but some customers experienced a delay in receiving the updates.
I have written a utility that will install the latest updates for you. I update this utility daily with the latest definitions when I get here in the mornings.

Sunbelt's (VIPRE), antivirus+antispyware definitions updates are going to be a continuing problem although tech support on this issue is worthless. Sunbelt has ongoing problems with their software. and additionally, I also have Sunbelt's Firewall installed which allowed 2 TROJAN DOWNLOADERS to install and corrupt my systems files on one of my computers.Fortunately, I have 20+ years as an IT pro and for the life of me, I do NOT trust any of SUNBELT'S software. I have the full home site paid edition of VIPRE'S ANTIVIRUS+ANTISPYWARE in addition to SUNBELT'S lousy FIREWALL. I will personally NOT renew my license with them when it expires! Their tech support is insufficient and obviously NOT worth the trouble of contacting them. I believe Kaspersky would be the best alternative. -
Thank you for posting you comment. I apologize that you feel you recieved inadequate help. Here at Sunbelt We pride ourselves on offing great tech support. It concerns me that you feel that you received "worthless advise" from our support. If you would like, Please contact us here again at support@sunbelt-software.com and put Attn: Mike. I'll have one of my higher tier techs help with the issue. -
Inappropriate? It's been working for quite some time now. I bookmarked the links...great solution.
Just in case anyone is concerned when they see the "vipre has encountered an error" messages ....these can be turned off by right-clicking the vipre icon in the system tray (by the clock) and unchecking "Show Balloons".
since the default settings are for vipre to check for updates every 2 hours and your computer may have been asleep you may see this message. So either turn off balloon messages or edit the schedule for updates.
These messages were never a problem for me but some of my customers that were new to vipre thought I had installed a very error prone program on their machines. They understand once I explained why.
thanks for all your help guys,
I’m thankful
