What does Active Protection do if "Check files when they are opened or copied" is unchecked?
AP has three primary options, but I am unsure of what level of protection is provided when the option "Check files when they are opened or copied" is unchecked?
I know it will not scan files if they are moved in something like Windows Explorer, but will objects that come in from the internet via a browser be checked?

Inappropriate?Thank you for posting your question. When this feature is checked in the active protection settings. The file is scanned by VIPRE's scan engine when it is opened or copied. Much like right clicking on the file and choosing scan now.
with feature turned off, Vipre's active protection will still monitor for suspicious behavior and known bad programs when the program or file is launched.
If you download a malicious file from the internet when this feature is unchecked, the file will be able to download but will be blocked from launching by active protection, The the scan engine will later grab the file during the scan.
You are still protected with this feature off. Turning this on, will grab the file sooner but can cause delays in a file being opened or copied. -
Inappropriate? To make sure I understand correctly, VIPRE interprets the difference between "opening" and "executing" a file? With "Check files when they are opened or copied" unchecked, will files be scanned on any execution attempt?
-
Inappropriate?Vipre has two different threat detection engines. The scan engine and Active protection. When that feature is checked the scan engine will look at the file when it is copied or opened, when it is turned off the scan engine doesn't look at that file until a scan is run. The active protection is always monitoring, but it doesn't see files until they are attempting to launch.

Inappropriate? In recent Defs (version 5014), I find .exe files take a while to open. Especially annoying is MSN.exe. Takes about 25 seconds to first completely launch.
-
Inappropriate?CaptKirk, We are still working out some of the false positives that we have been encountering, with the most recent definitions (5017) is this still occurring?
-
I will let you know tonight, I'm not home right now. Like I said, I just started noticing MSN launch time was getting longer. I tested this out by uninstalling Vipre and afterwards MSN would load right away. Then I reinstalled Vipre and noticed the 30 second launch time. But note, this will only happen the very first time I launch MSN (from a cold boot) Subsequent launchings act normally. I know I can exclude .exe files but I don't want to do that. I can live with it for now, now that I know what's causing it. -
I'm up tp defs 5018 and MSN still takes 30 seconds to launch. -
Inappropriate?Captkirk, we are still working to resolve this issue, it is still being worked on.

It's been quite a while now and MSN Premium still takes 30 to 45 seconds to launch with VIPRE installed. Any news on the fix for this? (besides turning off Active Protection)? -
Inappropriate?CaptKirk, We should have resolved any issues related to those definitions. If you add MSN premium to the always allowed list does that improve the start up time? To do that open Vipre, then click on manage, then click on always allowed. In here click on entire folder, then select the folder that MSN premium is installed to.
Please let me know the outcome, and if you have any other questions please let us know.
Thanks,
Peter

Peter, actually this has improved the launching of MSN quite a bit. I had tried allowing just MSN.exe but that made no difference. Allowing the entire folder seems to have worked! Thank you.
