Inappropriate?by the way, when it hibernates it seems truly off, no lights on laptop. when it restarts it may be hours later and lid is closed so not like it thinks its in standby mode
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for posting. Do you happen to have the auto updates or auto scans enabled? It may be kicking your laptop out of hibernation.

I would thing that auto updates and scans would be a default scenario. If that somehow causes a powered off computer to come back on, I think that would be a serious problem. -
Inappropriate?Hibernation or off completely?

Hibernation. Which writes memory to disk and powers off laptop, so not like it has any power going to the laptop. By design, I could even remove battery and it would remain in hibernation state. -
Inappropriate?same for me. was thinking I switched the pc off (to hibernation) and as I came back two hours later it was on. disabling rthe automatic update doesn't make sence for me.
Ciao

I’m confused
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for posting. Does your computer seem to come out of hibernation at a certain time or at certain intervals? Some computers/laptops have a type of "hybrid hibernation" feature in the settings which brings the computer/laptop back out of hibernation after a certain amount of time. This mode is the default mode for computers running VISTA. When in this mode, the computer WILL wake up when a timed event fires, such as a nightly scan.
Try the settings below and see if you still experience the same problem.
1. Set the power setting to Sleep or Hibernate instead of Hybrid Sleep. This will totally handle it, or
2. Do not schedule scans for when the computer is off
3. Turn Internet Access off, because checking for def updates will also wake the computer up

Inappropriate?Alex will have you informend about my answer, I think? But the main is: I'm using XP Pro SP3, not VISTA.
Also the PC wake up every 4 hours as I scheduled VIPRE to look for an update. No minute later or earlier.
Thanks for your help. I'm still waiting.
Regards,
Detlef K. -
Inappropriate?I also run XP Pro sp3. Pretty amazing that vipre will wake up my hibernated (off, not hybrid) laptop to update itself. Mine is scheduled for every 2 hours and like detlefk it seems to turn on per that schedule.
Is there a way to disable this behavior without turning off auto update? -
Inappropriate? We are still looking into why this is happening. Obviously it has something to do with the power setting, but since different laptop manufacturers have different power configurations, this makes it difficult to test. For now you may want to turn off hibernation completely until we figure out exactly what is going on.

Jason Layman -
Inappropriate?Hi I also have this problem on desktop (white box) this happens both in sleep mode & Hibernation mode Vista Ultimate SP1 Asus Mb Is there a solution as I am trying this as an evaluation I am a tech working for an ISP please contact me
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for posting. We were able to reproduce the problem and our development team is currently looking into it. The only way around the problem at the moment is to turn of hibernation completely.
Regards,
Jason Layman -
Inappropriate?I have this problem as well on XP Pro SP3 on a HP laptop.By turning off hibernation, do you mean standby as well? Also, I do automatically standby, I do it myself for a quick startup the next time I need my laptop and it is normally plugged in. I suppose when you get a patch it will automatically update.
-
Inappropriate? Both standby and hibernation will need to be disabled. We are still working on a fix for this problem.
-
Inappropriate?I'm having the standby issue as well. XP Home SP2. I have 7 days left on the trial. I keep the machine in standby in a closed armoire when not in use, and am concerned about thermal issues that would result with unexpected wakeups. For now I shut off the scheduled scans and auto pattern updates and have been doing them manually. I hope there's a fix before the trial runs out, as I don't want to purchase the product if there's not a fix for this issue.
-
Inappropriate?I am also experiencing this problem. My nightly shutdown ritual is to put my laptop in hibernation, and remove the power adapter. For the last week, or so, I have been encountering a depleted battery every morning. Suspecting that my battery was failing, I ran the HP battery test while the battery was completely charged, and it did indicate a battery failure. On Saturday, I ordered a new battery from HP.
I then remembered that I had updated Counterspy just about the time that the problem started, and discovered log entries during the periods that my laptop was supposedly powered off, and that Counterspy had created nightly deep scans, each starting at 1 AM. I left the power adapter attached last night, and finally was able to actually observe that the laptop powered up and ran the scan. I had no idea this was even possible.
Aside from the $150 I just wasted (I have to partially blame myself, and perhaps HP for a false failure on the testing), it has disturbing implications that unwanted and perhaps dangerous conditions can be created by this apparent bug in Counterspy. Think of the overheating possibilities for someone travelling with a laptop when the application starts up the unit while it is tightly packed up.
I think Sunbelt should at least immediately issue an email notice to all of its licensees, warning them of this risk, until the problem is isolated and resolved,
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? The problem occurs on both my laptop, w. Vista Home Premium SP1, and on my desktop w. XP SP3.
-
Inappropriate?vicw is totally correct. Sunbelt should send out an email notice to all Counterspy and Vipre customers alerting them of this potential issue. I could hardly touch my laptop the other morning after Vipre woke it up while it was in my laptop case. It is not uncommon to leave a laptop in sleep mode when you board a plane. In the confined enclosure of a overhead storage bin and insice a case with papers can have a catastrophic problem.
I have since uninstalled Vipre because I don't think Sunbelt is going to replace my system when it cooks itself. -
Inappropriate?I have the exact same problem on my laptop which nearly cooked itself yesterday in my laptop bag while being in standby and resuming while in transit. I cannot believe this 'feature' has not been detected before the software was released. I am also trialing the software and with 7 days to go, won't be purchasing it if I dont see a fix on here before then. To expect us to disable hibination and standby modes or disable the Vipre auto-updates are not solutions, but patch up jobs. Come on Sunbelt, you appear to have a good product in Vipre, don't let the wheels fall off by something which all other AV manufacturers seem to have a handle on.
-
Inappropriate?I agree, gpf. Their suggestion to avoid hibernation or standby is barely acceptable only as a short term workaround. Certainly disabling or deleting the default scheduled 1 AM scans is more practical, again, only as a workaround.
Sunbelt has been aware of this issue for a month or so, has reproduced and acknowledged it 21 days ago, and yet has not taken any proactive steps, to my knowledge, to inform their licensees of the problem and its potential risks, including perplexing depletion of otherwise good laptop batteries, damage to the laptops by overheating, or perhaps just slightly stretching the point, fire. They surely cannot expect their base to be informed via this forum, or to be aware of this thread.
I purchased my license within the last few months, and as much as I try to support innovative developers, I am very close to uninstalling Counterspy permanently, and walking away from it, based on what I perceive to be a lack of responsibility for thier products or any demonstration of concern for their customers. The only good that may come of this fo me, is my new awareness of the possibility of programmatically starting up a PC in hibernation. I fully intend to find out what needs to be set in Vista, and in XP to prevent any program from turning itself on like this. I'll give it a few more days to see if Sunbelt shows responsibility and takes appropriate actions, otherwise, I'm gone. -
Inappropriate?Disabling the Counterspy 3.1 default 1 AM scheduled Deep Scan eliminated the nightly battery depletion while in Hibernation, but I have since discovered that the default Automatic Updates every 2 hours still caused the laptop to power itself up for each attempt to check for updates, then go back to Sleep and to Hibernation with no operator intervention. This didn't completely deplete the battery, but had the laptop been packed in a travel mode, it would have been a potential heat and security problem. Disabling the Automatic Update function finally eliminated the onerous programmed power cycles on my system, but of course I'm back to manual updates and scan cycles until Sunbelt provides an update to eliminate the behavior.
That behavior did not exist on 2.5, and it is truly unnacceptable to me, To my knowledge, I've never had any other program that overrides the Hibernation mode this way, forcing automatic power up cycles in Hibernation. Why Sunbelt is not jumping on this issue full bore and getting it corrected is inexplicable to me, and I remain very disappointed that they still have taken no proactive measures to warn their customers, and to issue workarounds. Ironically, they did put out a very long email last week that was all about the wonderfullnes of Sunbelt, and their support - not a word of warning, or any suggestions for customers to workaround this issue. -
Inappropriate? The only workaround at the moment is to turn off Hibernation. I checked in with development and this will be fixed in a software update which is going out this month.
Regards,
Jason Layman -
That's fine, but does it not register to anyone that by not advising your customers of this problem, and this workaround in a proactive way, you are putting them at unnecessary risk? This behavior is so stealthy that the average customer, who probably won't read this forum in detail, let alone this specific thread, and will not have a clue what happened to his precious laptop when he discovers that the battery has been completely drained, or overheated and was perhaps damaged in transit. I will most likely not be nominating Sunbelt for any good citizenship awards in the near future. -
Inappropriate?Message For JasonL
I received an automated software update today to version 3.1.2315. Two questions:
1 - does this update resolve the Sleep / Hibernation Issie
2 - In checking Scan settings after the update "enable Root-kit detection" has been grayed and not selected. I am unsure if this was selected prior to the update. Am I protected from root-kits ? Vista Ultimate 64 bit OS -
3.1.2315 does not resolve the problem! I purchased Vipre today, put my laptop in hibernation (so it would be ready to go back to work when I turned it back on, rather than having to start up my 8-12 normally active programs) and came back to it about 5 hours later. I found that when I opened it up, it appeared to be coming back from standby mode - I did not have to press the power button to start it back up. When I logged in, I had an icon in the system tray indicating that Vipre had logged an error. When I checked the error log, I had three failed attempts to update definition files due to Internet connection problems.
I purposefully put my laptop in hibernation instead of sleep mode because I carry it around in a closed laptop case with paper next to it and I don't want it overheating (or draining the battery for that matter).
Besides the overheating and battery draining issues, there is a security issue as well. I have connections set up to a number of different wireless networks with automatic connections and passwords set up. These are generally secure networks, but if I'm in another location and someone happens to use an identical name on an unsecured network, I believe my machine might automatically connect and then transmit the update request across the unsecured network. If I'm personally turning on the machine, at least I can watch for the connections, but this doesn't work if a program is turning on the machine automatically.
I can actually see where the auto on feature can be helpful in the case where someone wants to turn their PC off at night, but have it come on to do a scan. However, turning on to check for updates is pretty useless. The proper behavior would be to have a check for updates performed when the computer is turned on if a scheduled check has been missed. While the machine is in hibernation, nothing is going to get into it, so there isn't a real need for updates. If the update is performed as part of the startup when a scheduled update has been missed, then any new threats can be recognized immediately once there is a possibility of risk. Since checking for updates doesn't take long, this shouldn't be a big problem time- and resource-wise. As far as the scans go, there should be an option on the scheduled scan setup to allow one of four choices in the event the computer is off or in hibernation at the time scheduled:
1. Skip the scan
2. Wake up the computer if possible and perform the scan
3. Perform the scan when the computer is next turned on
4. Notify me that a scan has been missed and give me the option of performing it then (this can also be a follow-up to option 2 if the computer is not successfully awakened)
These could also be options for the automatic updates, although I think they are much less useful in that case. In all cases where the computer is awakened, it should be returned to its previous state after the scan (or other activity) is performed.
Now that I've described what I think is proper behavior, I should acknowledge that at least some of these are probably issues with how the operating system and the computer implement scheduled events. I'm sure Sunbelt is using something in the operating system (in coordination with the computer hardware/firmware) to schedule these activities. That means that telling the computer to only perform the scheduled activity if the computer is on, but not if it is hibernating (or in standby or off) may be difficult. Also, determining what the power status was before the scheduled event was called and returning to that status automatically at the completion of the event may both be things that are not supported. I do think that if Sunbelt cannot find a fix for this problem, they at least need to put warnings on the scheduled scans, automatic updates, and corresponding installation pages to tell laptop users about these problems.
For Sunbelt's reference, I am using an HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop, dual bootable with XP SP3 and Vista SP1. I have installed Vipre in both environments, under the assumption that whichever one is booted will load it up. The processor is an AMD Turion 64 x 2 Mobile Technology TL-60. I don't know the BIOS information off-hand. -
Oweno2, 2315 is not the update for the hibernation issue. That update is still slated to come out this month.
The rootkit option is not available for 64-bit systems. Current rootkits that have been written for 32 bit systems, including the infamous Sony music CD rootkit, don’t work in the 64 bit OS. That’s because when updating the kernel code for the 64 bit version, Microsoft programmers took the opportunity to include a “patch guard” – code that is part of the kernel makes it impossible to install a patch in a running kernel (which kernel mode rootkits do on 32 bit systems).
Likewise, processor vendors had an opportunity, in making the new 64 bit processors, to include security mechanisms. Both AMD and Intel include code in their 64 bit products to prevent the exploitation of buffer overflow and buffer underrun conditions.
In other words, rootkit security is already built in to 64-bit systems so they guard against it instinctively. So in your case you will not need this option in CounterSpy v3 or Vipre. -
Inappropriate? The more I read on here the more Mickey Mouse this company sounds. Hardly ever a response firstly, and when they do, they offer minimal information.
How such a major design flaw gets past their testing team, and then when picked up by their customers appears to be taken so lightly, is beyond me.
Count me out guys, I'm off elsewhere for my AV protection.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? We definitely do not take this lightly, a "Power" tab is being added into the interface so you can decide whether or not you want Vipre or CS3 to wake your computer up out of sleep mode. The update will be out this month to resolve all hibernation issues.
Regards,
~ Jason -
Inappropriate?I finally threw in the towel on Counterspy 3 on my systems, and so far I have uninstalled it completely from my laptop, since Sunbelt still dosen't show any inclination to do the right thing, and advise all of their customers of this problem, and its inherent risks, and I don't want to expose my systems to any future undisclosed problems from it, or them. I'll just eat the cost of the remainder of the subscription.
Even the uninstallation has not gone smoothly, however, I got a BSOD on the uninstall, and restarting Defender took several system reboots.Even now Defender is periodically stopping for unknown reasons, which I had never seen it do, prior to CS3. I don't know if those problems are due to remnants of Counterspy or what it may have done to Defender while it was installed, but I hope to get it cleaned up, and I just won't reinstall CS3.
I’m gone
-
Inappropriate? The way Sunbelt handles this issue is even scarier than Microsoft's. If 'avoid hibernation and standby' is the only answer we've got for the last couple of months, I wonder what's next, 'avoid starting your laptop'?
Bye-bye Vipre! -
Inappropriate? It's been over 20 days since the last comment was made on this issue...was the update JasonL referred to ever released? I made the leap of faith today that it was/will be and purchased two licenses. Hope I don't get burned...
-
Inappropriate? The update should be released in a few weeks.
~ Jason. -
Inappropriate? The "imminent" release was supposed to be out before the end of September! See Jason L's posting just above (22 days ago). Credibility gap appearing in the marketing?
I’m miffed
-
Inappropriate? The patch was pushed back to October to add in more features and fixes. Don't worry, it's coming.
~ Jason -
I sincerely hope it IS coming, and soon!
The lack of pro-active warning to your present customers is inexcusable.
I'm sure you've cost countless users money for unnecessary battery replacements.
Maybe there have been damaged PC's or even fires caused by overheating when the PC turned itself on while in an enclosed space, in which case Sunbelt is liable for damages. Have you even consulted your lawyers on the enormous potential for liability you have exposed yourselves to here?
I smell class action law suit.

Inappropriate?I downloaded Vipre a couple of days ago & immediately started getting the problem with a Compaq Evo N410C. So it looks like they haven't issued the update. I seem to be in a more fortunate position in that I am in the trial period so I haven't paid for something I won't be able to use. A shame really because I quite like the software especially the low resource usage. NOD32 here I come I suppose
I’m angry
-
Inappropriate? Will someone from Sunbelt please post on this thread when the update that addressed this issue is released? Thank you. I really want to use this software but cannot until this issue is solved.
-
Inappropriate? The new hotfix is currently in testing, so it should be released soon. In a couple of weeks I've been told. This will take care of all of the hibernation issues.
Regards
Jason Layman -
Inappropriate? So, the fix that was due in September and then delayed until October will now be delayed again until at least November. My trial 15day will have expired before then. When it does expire, if the fix hasn't arrived, I'll be going elsewhere. This is a totally unacceptable attitude to bugs by a software vendor and I for one am not going to tolerate it. As I said previously, it is a great shame as I was quite happy otherwise.
I’m More angry
-
Inappropriate?Any fix to this problem must work for Standby as well as Hibernation. I leave my Toshiba A60 in Standby when not using it, but since installing VIPRE it wakes up at the scheduled scan time, which is unacceptable. I have automatic updates turned off in VIPRE at Sunbelt's recommendation, so that's not the cause. No other software that does scheduled daily activities has ever woken this laptop from Standby.
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Personally I have the luxury of turning my laptop off at the moment, so now I'm aware its not a problem. But I'd think that any lack of communication on a problem that's been going on this long would look fantastic when it gets to court after your daughters schoolbag set on fire - I think you could shut Sunbelt down with that, but hey what do I know...
I’m disapointed
-
Inappropriate?Thank you all for your patience. We have just released the new version of VIPRE that includes power setting that gives you the option to not wake your computer for scans or updates. You can download the newer version from the following link.

Inappropriate? When I went to the Power tab, I found a checkbox for "Wake from sleep on scheduled scans." This is obviously the appropriate checkbox, but I have a couple of issues with the labeling and help.
1. My XP SP3 machine has a hibernate mode and a standby mode, but not a sleep mode. I don't recall whether Vista changed that or not, but it wasn't obvious to me which of those two modes the checkbox applies to. The help indicates that it applies to hibernate mode, but doesn't indicate whether or not it applies to standby mode.
2. Neither the label nor the help indicates whether this option applies to checking for updates. It may have seemed obvious that if you don't want the computer waking up for scans, you don't want it waking up for updates either, but it would be nice to see this documented.
3. As a trivial point, the order of the items on the help screen is Power Save and then Wake from Sleep, while the Power tab has them in the reverse order. -
Edward,
If you have the 'Wake from sleep on scheduled scans' option enabled, it will wake your computer from any form of unconscious state to run a scheduled scan. For desktop computers, VIPRE will wake the computer for updates, then return it to it's previous state no matter what this option is set at. For laptops, it will disable the scheduled scans as well as the updates if you have the second option enabled. I'll see what we can do about phrasing this better, or explaining it differently.
Regards,
Jason Layman -
Inappropriate?I have had the new version installed for a couple of days now. I can confirm that my laptop is no longer waking up from hibernation to do updates. What I'm not sure about is whether the software is then doing an update automatically when I power it up myself. I would expect this to happen if a scheduled update has been missed. Overall I would say I am happy with the software so far.
My bigger concern is how anyone at Sunbelt could have thought it was a good idea to wake up a sleeping/hibernating/standby'd computer without returning it to that state after it had finished. My secondary concern about all this is how long it has taken for them to sort it out.
Also, the Help file says that 'When VIPRE checks for updates, it looks for both threat definitions and software, if available'. If that is the case, why didn't it update itself with the new version of VIPRE? I had to download & reinstall it manually?
Finally, it would have been nice if someone at Sunbelt had apologised for all the trouble this has caused. It seems their attitude to bugs is much the same as Microsoft's.
I’m happier but disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Niall,
I'm glad VIPRE is working better for you now. Sorry about the time it took to get the hibernation issues resolved and the trouble it has caused. The software update will roll around to you eventually. The reason why we don't update everyone all at once is so we don't end up locking up our servers with everyone connecting at the same time.
Regards,
Jason Layman -
Inappropriate? The new version seems to solve the wake-up problem on my laptops. I appreciate updates and scans being delayed 5 minutes after wake-up, because my laptop takes more than a minute after wake-up to reconnect with the outside world.
Sunbelt's design decisions take away my full control of my network. Why can't I choose the update times, as I can in other antivirus programs? Why is the new option (of VIPRE not waking up the computer) not functional on desktops? (Jason said: "For desktop computers, VIPRE will wake the computer for updates, then return it to its previous state no matter what this [new] option is set at.")
Basically, If I put my PC in standby, I don't want anyone changing that. -
Alan,
This is something I have suggested a few times. I'll see what we can do about changing some of these settings around. We just need enough people backing up this idea. ;)
