Inappropriate? The quicktime still frame function is done using applescript so it's not going to be perfect. The stills are written to the {Path to Reel} location, which is automatically calculated, and should be one level up from the footage.
For example if you have:
/Volumes/disk/047/A047_C001_080224.RDC/A047_C001_080224_001.R3D
then the still is written here:
/Volumes/disk/047/
because different builds of the red camera firmware can produce different filename structures, it's possible that {Path to Reel} might not be getting calculated properly. The thing to do is go to records for clips where the import didn't work, and on the clip details page, try the grab still button (just under the image placeholder). If that doesn't work, let me know what you have as the filename for that clip. -
Inappropriate?what would be nice is if the stills could also be stored independent of the media. so they could still be accessed if the media isnt present.

Inappropriate?the idea behind this feature is that as well as generating the still, it also copies it into the database, so you have a reference image available at all times. Once in the database, you can ctrl/right-click on it to save a copy elsewhere.
You can also add the image to the database manually by clicking the image placeholder
