Streaming issues & More
I host OSD- Obsessive Sneaker Disorder and our weekly talk show took place last night. We ran into an issue around 10 pm EST with some people logging into the show and those that wanted to stream the show couldn't hear it.
Was there something going on with the servers that may have caused this issue?
Secondly, I checked my call stat numbers and it's only crediting me for 1 Live Audio Streamer, when I know I had at least 11 through Talkshoe.
I look forward to hearing from someone soon. Peace!

Inappropriate?Hi,
Thanks fo reporting the problem. We need some more information.
Your show started at 9.30 pm and from 9.30 pm to 10 pm users where able to listen to the stream and there were no issues?
Your show lasted for more than 2 hours, were users able to listen to the stream after 10 pm issue?
Thanks,
Madhuri -
Inappropriate?Hello Madhuri,
Thank you for replying so quickly.
The show did start at 9:30 pm EST and there were streaming issues until 10:15 pm EST. After 10:15 pm, there didn't seem to be an issue, but it the issues did arise again close to 11:00 pm EST.
When people logged into the chat room, it took a long time for them to hear the show. A number of listeners logged out of the chat room by closing the pop-up window and tried to long back on but the issue persisted.
I’m in wonderment.

Inappropriate?Hi,
Could you please provide more details on what exact streaming issues you had?
- Did the streaming start after you dialed in?
- Were all the users not able to listen to the stream at all till 10.15 pm? or some users were able to listen to the stream and some users were not able to listen to the stream.
- Is the main issue long time taken for users to hear the stream/show? Were they eventually able to hear the stream?
- The time taken to hear the stream would depend on individuals network as well as Talkshoe network (bandwidth). Did all the users face this issue?
If you have any more details please provide it.
Thanks,
Madhuri -
Inappropriate?Hi Madhuri,
The streaming didn't start after folks dialed into the system. It took a very long time before it started.
Only some of the users were able to listen to the show and then at 10:15 pm the problem seemed to go away to only return.
It took some folks 45 minutes to hear the stream/ show. That's never happened before.
Most of the show's listeners are using DSL or Broadband. At one point, my co-host was "kicked out" of the chat and he had a difficult time getting back into the chat room. He was able to stay on the phone and speak while he reboot his computer.
If you need more information, let me know. Thank you again.

Inappropriate?Hi,
Thanks for the information. I need some more information.
- The main problem seems to be long time taken to start the stream. Did users face the same problem when they connected using Talkshoe Pro client?
-Was the above mentioned problem limited to web client users?
Thanks,
Madhuri -
Inappropriate?I apologize for the delayed response.
The stream did take a long time for the stream to start. Users faced this issue with the Talkshoe Pro client and the web interface.
In all, it took 45 minutes for people for the streaming to begin.
I’m curious

Thanks for letting us know. I have encountered this and I have emailed Madhuri a report with info from mine. -
Inappropriate?Hi,
I have analyzed all the logs, and all the information. I think there was nothing wrong with streaming or the servers. As per the website log I see some requests coming from Internet Explorer, are failing. There is a known bug with IE. I have a feeling some users were hitting that IE bug.
Next time you see this problem, please suggest users to try other browsers such as firefox and please let me know the results. If even after changing the browser people see this problem then, if possible, please report immediately. If I am online, I will try to participate live in your show, so that I can analyze it further.
Thanks,
Madhuri -
My show is streamed into Second Life using the MP3 stream. I got reports of intermittent outages and constant rebuffering, on average lasting 1-3 minutes. My show ran from 8:30pm - 9:30pm and listeners reported issues the entire time. -
Inappropriate? Is "East Coast Conservative podcast", episode id 135523 your show in which you had problems?
Rebuffering messages are normal depending on the network condition. If you had a perfect network where packets were supplied at a constant good rate such that buffer gets filled up, then you would not see rebuffering messages. Before stream is played, the player fills the buffer with packets and only when buffer is filled upto certain level it starts playing stream . If you do not receive packets because of the network issues then you would see rebuffering message.
Do you always see this issue? How many listeners reported this issue?
I will check network bandwidth at the Talkshoe end to verify there were no bottlenecks at that end of the network.
Thanks,
Madhuri -
Inappropriate?Good morning Madhuri,
My show is "OSD-Obsessive Sneaker Disorder" and the issue was during the show dated August 8, 2008, episode ID 134808. -
Sorry for adding to the confusion - he was asking me... at least I think he was. At least there is more than one talk cast and more than one episode where this is occurring so they have more to look at. -
Inappropriate?OK....Thanks for responding Hatton. I hope all this information helps Madhuri and the TalkShoe crew.
-
Inappropriate?Hi,
My earlier question about Episode id and time was for Hatton.
I know your show id and time since I have analyzed logs for your show.
As I mentioned to you in my earlier reply the problem you (SolePrioprietor) saw was related to bug in Internet explorer (I think). As per the log, there were issues in stream access only from IE and there is a bug in IE related to this.
So, next time you see this please suggest users to use Firefox or some other browser and let me know.
Thanks,
Madhuri

Inappropriate?Awesome! Thank you Madhuri.
Have a good day. -
Inappropriate?Madhuri, I've used Firefox, Safari and IE on Windows and Mac machines and have not yet been able to hear the streaming audio (it always says it's buffering, and clicking on the link that says something like "problems hearing" just opens a window that doesn't load.) TalkShoe's a great service, but the fact that listeners can't listen if they aren't on the phone is a pain in the butt. I've posted this question elsewhere on GetSatisfaction, to no avail. Any idea when this will be fixed, or if there's another way around this problem, so listeners can hear online? TalkShoe is a great service but not very complicated, so I don't understand why this basic streaming issue can't be corrected (lack of money, perhaps?)
I’m waiting for the streaming problem to be fixed.

Inappropriate?Hi,
Thanks Tristan for reporting. It is good to get the feedback. It could be something specific to your connection.
- Have you ever been able to listen to the stream, or you have always had problem?
- When you had problem listening to the stream, were other participants in the talkcast able to listen to the stream?
Could you send me the talkcast id, the time that you tried to listen to, your user id and external ip (if you know) when you had problem? I will check the logs.
Also, next time you see this problem please send mail as soon as possible so that I will try to join if I am online and can check live.
Thanks,
Madhuri -
Inappropriate?Madhuri, thanks for the response.
I've never had luck listening to a stream, whether it be on PC, Mac, in Firefox, IE or Safari, at work or at home (different ISPs).
Right now I'm trying to listen to talkcast ID 23966#, user angieslist. Not sure of the external IP.
Thanks!

Inappropriate?Hi Tristan,
I am very sorry for the delay in getting back. Many users are able to listen to the Talkshoe stream without any problem. I am thinking it is something specific to your environment. At the same time, I am puzzled that you are not able to listen to the stream from work as well as home.
- When you try from work and/OR home are you trying from the same PC?
- Do you have a firewall on your PC which could prevent receiving data?
- Are you able to listen to any other stream from any other website? If yes, then please provide me an example URL of the stream that you are able to listen to from other website.
Thanks,
Madhuri
