How does the backup work ?
OK, I've not figured out the backup function, and there is nothing in the instructions,o the iTunes web page or your web site.
If I switch on automatic backup (why automatic only, why not manual too?) I get asked for an e-mail account and password. Huh ? What has a backup got to do with my e-mail. Where is it going to store it and where will my e-mail and password be stored ? Who has access, and how can I be sure it won' t be sold for advertising/spam ?
I am frequently abroad with no data access. How would that effect the backup - hence my preference for a manual rather than auto backup.
Yours confused

Inappropriate?Hi gbrooker,
You have to create an account first to be able to backup. When you click on the backup settings (or try to enable auto backup), you are taken to the account login screen first. If you haven't already created an account, just hit the "new account" button in the top right corner.
Your email and data is safe. All data transfer is between the Weightbot app and our web server and is done via 128bit SSL encryption.
And no, we don't sell your email or use it in any way. It's used as a unique identifier for your account. You'll never forget your account name and if you ever forget your password or have issues with your account, we communicate directly with the email address you provided so no one else can pretend they are you and gain access to your data.
Hope that helps a bit. Feel free to ask any more questions or let us know of any concerns. :)

Inappropriate? Many people don't like posting their addresses for a broad variety of reasons (spam, spoofing, security, and privacy being some of them (personally, I dontvwant to add another account to my already insanely long list of accounts). Is their amy chance you will be offering a wifi backup to a personal host/of anytime in the near future?

Your email address is only used as a unique identifier. It would never be public or shared in any way. The reason we use your email address is because if you happen to forget your password, we can prove it's your account.
We don't have plans to offer personal hosting as we want to keep the application as simple as possible. -
Inappropriate? It would be clearer if the user was helped to discover this understanding with a few improvements to the UI
For instance:
a pop up message "Would you like to set up a backup account on the tapbots server ?" when first starting the app without an account.
In the preferences a button saying " set up backup account" if not set up.
When setting up an account, a line saying that the e-mail address is used for the account username, and a info button displaying a popup with explanation about what you will and will not do with the e-mail address
Clearly stating that the password field is the password for the backup account, not the users e-mail password, which the current form incites people to give you - this is what shocked me the most about the current UI.
It is also not clear how often auto backup connects to the servers, and what happens if there is no network when entering a new weight. Does the backup fail silently and just backup all data the next time the net is available when one records a new weight ?
Cheers

Guy, Thanks for the comments and suggestions we'll take a look to see if we can improve it, unfortunately there isn't a ton of room on screens to explain every field (at least not without cluttering up the UI).
Backups should happen every time you modify data and have a connection, although there's also logic in place to make sure if you are entering a ton of data in it doesn't keep hitting the server. Also if it can't backup it'll just fail silently and try again the next time you start the app. -
Inappropriate?I presumed I would receive something in my email as part of the backup.
That might get you round the export issue too actually? -
The backup is somewhat modeled on TimeMachine, it just does it's job without you having to worry about it. The data is just stored on a server and available if you need it. If/When we decide to do an export function it'll probably be web based from the backup data since doing so won't complicate the application itself. -
Inappropriate?Paul,
Web based from backup data sounds fine. The ability to get at the data, and then manipulate it myself for my own nefarious.. er... personal reasons would be great too.
As for the UI, I think you are right to keep it as simple as possible, it's one of the reasons I like this app so much. I even enjoy putting my weight in it every day... even though I'm WAY off my goal!! ;-)
I’m happy
