Backslashed apostrophe in location names

In geolocalization, places with ' in the name appear with a backslash before the char (like this \'). For example, here in Italy lots of cities use apostrophe ("Quarto d'Altino", "Romano d'Ezzelino", etc) and they all appear wrong ("Quarto d\'Altino", "Romano d\'Ezzelino", etc).
