New "Gives you Hell" extreme track exclusively for people on speed.
Come on Tapulous. The hard version of this track was much too easy, but how can you label this new version "extreme" If you want to make tracks like that, I suggest you put them in a new the "DXtreme" category that Ed suggested, and then make a real extreme track that caters to the people who fc the hard version the day it comes out, but will never get through tracks such as this new version that can hardly be considered anything but a test of how small your fingers are and how much you're racing.
Why not make a track that is more difficult than the "hard" version but does not make your head explode? You could make an extreme version more challenging without resorting to the cheap tactics that look ripped straight out of Tap Tap Tap.
Flame me all you want, but I'm not the only one who thinks this track is complete crap. I'll bet you anything that these patterns did come out of Nick's head.
Show that track to any concert pianist and he/she will laugh at you and possibly ask to borrow something for your pill cabinet. Just because you have a new musician working for you who will probably be up on that leaderboard does not justify it. People will still ask, what is HE smoking...

The extreme tap track for Gives You Hell was made by me, and I hold no regrets about it :). In fact, Luke agrees with my sentiment at the start of his post when he said that the hard version was "much too easy," but let's take a look at a few things:
-"Tap Tap Tap" has a very simple marching beat, and that's reflected in the tap track. It also has a good amount of rolls--this again is reflected in the tap track. This has no "cheap tricks," but simply a hard interpretation of the source material.
-"Gives You Hell" doesn't have as simple a rhythm as "Tap Tap Tap," and the track follows both vocals and instrumentals (the switches aren't that sudden). Moreover, it's FCable with two thumbs, at the expense of some tap-and-holds not lasting the full duration. But the track is more friendly to advanced three-finger players, regardless of the kind of grip they use.
-The only way to find out (currently) that the extreme version exists is by looking at an earlier post of mine on this forum, so the need to create a whine thread of this nature--feigning outrage--is nonexistent. Common sense would dictate that if it's my work, you can bet on it being truly difficult.
-It isn't Tapulous' job or mine to hold your hand and make things easy for you. If you want to be able to FC a song the day it comes out, stick to hard mode and below. Other big-time rhythm games have "impossible" songs of their own, and TTR should be no exception.
-Funny that you don't complain about "Freak-a-zoid" and "No Stars Over Bethlehem." Oh that's right, they weren't made by me so those songs don't give you an opportunity to continue your attempts to annoy me :-)
I was in Tapulous Chat for a small chunk of the night yesterday and received plenty more kudos about the track. The same is true in Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube.
PS. Last I checked, this isn't a piano game and I didn't make sheet music, so your argument about showing this to a pianist is moot.

Inappropriate?Like all games, easy, medium, and hard are difficulty steps for a casual gamer. Extreme on the other hand is to rise above all others and be exactly what it is -- extreme.
The difficulty on these tracks can range anywhere from slightly harder to downright impossible.

You know, you are undoubtedly the king. You are kind to people who ask for your help. I love you, what can I say? But, there is no need for sarcasm to the whiners, it just makes them whine louder and don't ever say again that you don't know music. You are one of the finest musicians I know, whether you've studied or not, even if you never touched a piano. So don't be so modest. -
Inappropriate?DX-Chain just shut you down luke.
The track is fine, it was fairly easy to hit 100% on it. It took me 2 tries, but I finally did it.
You are very luck DX that you were able to make a track, that's just awesome. :D
I can't wait to see more. Anyways, why don't you go practice some more, then come back and try again. Extreme is supposed to be a bit of a challenge, there have to be some songs which are harder then others.
I like it anyways, thanks DX!
I’m posting a reply.

Inappropriate?Actually, the speed and the repeated changes of lanes is interesting on the Extreme version of Gives You Hell ... I wouldn't say that this track is too Extreme .. indeed it's easier to FC as many other Extreme tracks. There's a good balance of difficulty .. it's not too easy for the Extreme section, yet not too Extreme.
Besides the Extreme boss track of the new TTR DMB, it's my favorite now! A welcome change as I yet got bored by all these other Extreme tracks .. although I can't FC most of them yet ... but give me just a few more tries and I'll certainly FC both my current favorites ;P
I’m on speed
-
Inappropriate?haha that explains why its so hard (well compared to the hard track)
i kind of like tracks i cant 100% though, gives something to progress to. this ones defiantly in the DXtreme bank though.
oh and on a note thinking to games like rock band and guitar hero they were the same, some hard track easy other near impossible. -
Inappropriate?I don't even know where this extreme version is...... I can't find it!
-
delete the song from your hard songs list and then re-download it -
Ah thanks -
Erase your current Gives You Hell on hard, and re-download to get the Extreme version :) -
I got 771K pretty easily on that song just now. Not a FC at all :P Love it though!
Whats the highest score possible (projected)? Or DX what have you gotten? -
Scratch that... Thought I did worse and ended up with 853K.
DX what's your score??? -
Inappropriate?THAT'S SUCH A FUN SONG !!!!!
@Luke: Stop being such a wimp. -
Inappropriate?after playing this song a few times, i find that other extreme songs that i used to think were really hard, now seem a lot easier. if anything, making new songs more difficult will only raise the standards of our play, and also make it less likely for people to get bored of the game.
I’m thinking - keep making the songs harder!

Those are my thoughts exactly...and given the new 2.5's tap rating system, it only seems fitting that Extreme gets harder, as everything is automatically easier now. -
how does the new tap rating system work? -
The rings at the bottom on the tap zone change color depending on how well you tapped the last sphere or arrow. So green = 150, light blue = 75, dark blue = 50, orange = 0, and red = complete miss. -
I realized that... That's pretty awesome :) -
oh snap i didn't even notice. i like how they didn't get rid of the splash - i tend to notice that more because i'm usually looking at what's next instead of where i tapped (except for the slower songs).
i like how it works for the arrows too. -
i tried using the new tap rating system on girls of prey and just broke a mil. thanks for the tip dx!
now that i think about it - shouldn't they be making new leaderboards for version 2.5??? -
Naw because they didn't fix anything. Just made it smoother and better. Not like the previous update when they fixed that white-screen glitch. -
i guess, but the new tap indicator thing is definitely helping my scores out! i guess it would be pretty dumb to keep having new leaderboards every time a new version comes out. -
Inappropriate?Holy mother of god!! That's tough and fun. But how can anybody do the part with the arrows and the taps so close together? My iPhone needs such an extreme shake to get an arrow that I can't imagine there's a way to recover to hit a tap that fast!! Good work, DX-Chain. It's going to be fun practicing to see if I can master that.
I’m excited
-
The trick for the arrow parts is to maintain your iPhone/iPod hold *very* still so as to not clear the arrows earlier than intended. Glad you like it! A video is coming within a few hours, hopefully :) -
I'd actually be happy for the arrows to clear early, that would give me time to get the phone back near my right hand in time to hit the next tap. ;) I'm really nowhere near good enough to worry about getting full points on a song like that. I'm just trying to figure how to arrow and tap in such rapid succession. How far do you have to shake to get your arrows to clear? I seem to have to jerk my iPhone out to the side by several inches, which is why I can't imagine getting it back in place in time to tap with my other hand. -
I do a very light tilt when it's side arrows (not even an inch) and a tiny front tilt for the center arrows. -
I appreciate the tips, DX. :)
I'm wondering if I understand what you mean by "tilt." I was picturing that meaning that you rotated it in a way that the home button stayed approximately still but the top of the iPhone/iPod moved to the side (like drawing a circle with a compass). That's the move I was practicing with, anyway. If I'm doing the same move as you, I think my shaker must be less sensitive than yours. It will occasionally register a shake done like that around the 45 degree range, but it mostly won't register unless I accidentally move the whole device to the side while trying to rotate it. I'm going to keep practicing, though. Hopefully, it's not that my device needs a more extreme shake and rather I'm just not doing it quite right.
Again, thanks for the help. -
Tiny movements usually work for arrows, but not always. Sometimes a shake won't even register no matter what. This causes me to err on the side of moving way too much, especially when I'm otherwise playing well (so as not to lose a streak due to a stubborn arrow).
Sometimes it seems to behave differently if the device is tilted at the start of the game. Arrows just "clear" when the get close even if you don't move. It seems to be best to hold the device very still & at the angle you plan to play while the song is starting. If Tapulous sets a neutral position during the start of the song, that would make sense.
It would be nice if someone from Tapulous would just explain how this works (or is supposed to work). -
This comment was removed on 06/10/09.
see the change log -
@bufulo that is sort of my experience with the arrows. The tiny movements are not always reliable and sometimes don't register at all. -
Do you also notice that when small movements ARE working, they work REALLY well & you are able to get green hits almost every time? That's what I see.
I wonder if the new iPhone 3GS fixes some hardware issue in this respect. I believe I read something about better accelerometer performance on the new phone. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they didn't originally intend it to be used the way it is & have now refined either the hardware or manufacturing to improve it. -
Inappropriate?Look, the track is definitely one of the harder tracks in the game, and definitely the most unique; and like DX said, this isn't a piano game, so there's no reason to use that as a comeback.
Also, its always good to have songs which we think are "impossible" I mean, look at Guitar Hero 2...it took two years after the game came out for someone to FC Jordan. That song was deemed "F*cking Impossible" when the game came out.
Then in Nov of 2007 Guitar Hero 3 came out and had Through the Fire and Flames, which made Jordan look like a walk in the park. The guy who finally FCed it after 9 months since it was released practiced the song over and over for five hours each day. Since then, only two other people have FCed the song (one guy has done it six times now).
So no. This track is definitely not hard, and the challenge is nothing important. It just takes more effort and practice than usual.

Well I didn't do too badly on my first try. Good I read up on arrows first, though! And DX claims to know nothing about music. -
Well that statement refers to my lack of formal music training, so in that regard it's true :P.
Give "Clocks" on TTR 2.5 a try as well--you get that by importing your premium content (if you got Coldplay), and the Clocks you import will have a bonus extreme version that doesn't appear in the actual Coldplay app. If you wanna check out how it plays like, go to my Youtube page, where I got a video of Gives You Hell as well. -
Thanks! I'll try clocks. I've played gives you hell five times, and I go up about 50,000 each time. Don't ever expect to fc it as will ceegers, but it's sure improving my game, and what fun to play! It's a very skillful rendering, DX. -
Inappropriate?I love the really hard songs that can be considered 'DX' difficulty. Gives you hell is one of the few songs that i play and i don't seamlessly get 100%. Almost done with 'clocks' but 'Gives You Hell' and 'Rum is For Drinking' still own me.
Also it is hilarious to vs friends in 'DX' songs like 'Gives You Hell' and I may online get 550 000 but they get under 30 000. Funny stuff...
Funny sadistic stuff....
Make more of those so I can get some more songs that completely pwn me.
I need a challenge...
PS. Music doesn't really have much to with tap tap. I found out about a week ago I play tap tap like a piano. I can't play a piano at all....
As a final statement- Please make more, they are so fun.

Just because you don't play it doesn't mean it isn't related :-P -
yea dude just cuz u dont play piano doesn't mean three finger grip has nothing to do with piano. there's other people in this world besides you u know -
Inappropriate?I think the Extreme version is fun - definitely challenging. Doubt I'll ever FC it with 2 thumbs, but I'm sure it's possible.
Is it just me or does anybody else do best on a really hard song the first time you play it? When the new Extreme version of Gives You Hell came out, I did pretty well (for me), playing online, & I don't think I've matched that score yet. In fact, the same thing has happened to me quite a few times, usually when playing online. Sometimes I get the catch-ups, but not very often.
I played the Lady GaGa (or whatever) song the other day in that new Room & FC'd it the first time I played. Wasn't able to do it again after trying 3 or 4 times.
Sure wish online scores didn't have catch-ups so those scores would be saved on the leaderboards & on the device too! -
I find I do better on songs the first time I play them, or the first time of the day. Usually when I get up, I can FC Tap Tap Tap, but later in the day, I find that I miss shakes or something. I know how you feel :P
Yeah, it'd be nice with online scores being able to be posted. -
I definitely play better when my hands are nice & warm, especially after a shower. Other times, I'm just "in the zone" too & do well for who-knows-what reason. Most of the time, I'm not playing well but am just too stubborn to walk away!
Maybe "the first time" for a song invokes sort of an adrenaline rush that really does improve performance. Sort of like a natural version of those dorky game-performance-enhancing soft drinks I've seen somewhere. Do people really buy that junk as anything more than a joke? Tapulous needs a Tap Tap Revenge performance-enhancing soda! Wonder what ingredient could be used for the "revenge" - maybe Ex-Lax? -
I often do best the first time I ever play a song or when I haven't played it in a long while, which is weird because when playing an instrument, sight-reading it not my strong suit.
Some songs I do better with practice, though -- especially songs with long streaks of repeated taps. If I'm familiar with a song, I know to stop at 15 or 17 taps rather than an even 16. -
yeah, its the same for me...i play the Cello, and I cant say sight reading is very easy. But when I come to a game that I havent played in awhile, I do better then I would have the 2nd time i played -
I've always wondered how each of us gets thru the long streaks of taps. For me, counting much beyond 3 usually doesn't work. Sometimes I can count to 8, but I usually do better just following the music. Guess I need to go back to elementary school! :)
Some days I fly right thru even the longest fast streaks while other days I couldn't get beyond 3 if my life depended on it. I always thought it was just Tapulous messing with me by exercising (exorcising?) some remote control over TTR. -
For me it's all about how it feels... it just feels right to tap the 16th notes (or whatever it is). Which is one reason why Gives You Hell has issues: I'm pretty sure some sections have a weird number of taps, even though the song has a rather straight 16th-note feel. It just doesn't feel right... because it isn't lol -
Inappropriate?I'm sorry, I have to agree with Luke this time. Gives You Hell Extreme is too Extreme, also, I don't see why DX-Chain can release his songs and you leave the other top-players behind. Tap Tap Tap is a good song, but this one is just so irregular, I can't place the taps in the music... No Stars Over Bethlehem and Freak-a-Zoid somehow are right on the beat (I can't FC them, but their taps fit in the music).
Conclusion (with own opinion in it): Let other top-players make their own taps too, check DX-Chains tracks before releasing them.
Alternative: Create new difficulty: DX-Treme. -
While I don't think it is too extreme (as I, ignoring the stupid random drops, have FCd it), I do however agree that spots just don't follow the music, and I would be glad to dialogue with someone about it if they care to hear it.
Still fun to play :) -
i feel like some parts don't exactly follow the music too (or maybe I'm just not listening to the right beat/instrument/vocals). Though I haven't FC'd it, I still don't think it's too extreme...just maybe not perfectly choreographed (for lack of a better word lol) -
Inappropriate?@Bufulo What was that about a Tap Tap Energy Drink?
hahaha
Check it outttt
I’m laughin
-
I had a feeling you'd post a picture. I want to see the ingredients side along with all the clever performance-enhancing statements!
Tapulous should run with all this while they can. Ever notice there is a Hanna Montana version of pretty much every product on Earth? -
Yeah. I constantly make jokes about Hannah Banana. Tapulous should consider take over her status, or at least make her promote Tap Tap >:D -
HAHAHAHAHA i want this drink to be real!!! lol -
Don't we all :P -
Haha, Tapulous saw this. They tweeted about it :D
@Tapulous -
hah ya man, I wanted to ref your twitter acct but I didn't know it... -
oh, it's @Mattster092, just so you know :) -
Inappropriate?Hey DX, I've got to thank you for this song. One of the main things I have trouble with in Tap Tap are those strings of fast notes. Two grouped together is fine, but when it gets to three or more, I start only tapping two instead of the required taps. This song has a whole bunch of two groups and three groups, and I havent found another song that helps better then this one.

-
Inappropriate?Whether or not the taps "follow the music" can be pretty subjective. The world of psycho-acoustics is tricky stuff.
Have you ever captured music signals on a scope to look at the waveform in detail & then considered how you perceive it?
It is far from obvious or consistent when certain sounds begin or end - everyone would judge these events a little differently. Obviously there is a window of time that most people agree on, otherwise games like TTR wouldn't even be possible.
Larger "errors" are pretty obvious & I do think there are a few here & there in other songs. I thought this particular song followed the music very well. I probably haven't played it nearly as much as many of you though. -
Had to read that a couple of times...
I get what your saying, and yeah, DX is a pretty good composer, his other song Tap Tap Tap tells you that much
It would be pretty hard to get it perfect... -
The trick about this song is that the beat changes. So there may be 3 taps in a row, but later on it switches to 2 taps in a row, the pattern is constantly changing, providing an excellent challenge :) -
yeah, my favorite part = P
They need more songs like that -
Yeah. That and Tap Tap Tap, with Tap Tap Tap the really fast part consisting of usually 4 taps in each segment switches from 3 blues at the start, to 4 at the end, and about 8 greens on the final "tap tap". -
haha and DX made that one too = P -
Yeah. I like his tracks since they are the most challenging (obviously he wants to challenge himself). I also like some of the other songs like Rum is for Drinking and Fact of Life -
Actually, what I really meant was that there truly is no such thing as "perfect." A simple lone drum beat, for example would be represented by a string of thousands of numbers since the analog sound is sampled over 44 thousand times each second! Basically none of us would exactly agree which particular one of those numbers represented the exact correct time to tap.
This doesn't take into account lossy compression techniques. I don't know what TTR uses to encode the audio, but some encoding will alter these perceptions & timings.
Anyway, I'm sure Tapulous has taken this into consideration & that is why we have a window of time where a tap is considered perfect. They may also have to consider decoding issues (delays), etc. These are details only Tapulous would know for sure, but I can assure you they are all issues that are considered when writing this sort of audio-related software.
The important thing is that the tap positions be consistent. Even that is not necessarily easy to do & I'm sure Tapulous is refining the methods they use to do this as they grow. -
that is some deep stuff bufulo... -
no kidding :| -
haha Im j/k, I get mostly what your saying....except the numbers part, I dont exactly understand that -
but its still pretty techy, by itself = P -
I just graduated with an acoustics major, so... Why yes, I have! lol
But anyway, it's not just the exact positioning of the notes, but also sometimes the number of notes fit into a certain amount of time that is illogical in comparison to the song.
Should I go into detail or not? -
no, unless you want someone other then you and bufulo to explode = P -
well my HOPE would be that DX or tapulous would ever talk about maybe why things are a certain way. Or if they don't have an answer, to think about changing it in the future. I created a whole thread after all lol http://getsatisfaction.com/tapulous/t... but nobody seems to be able to argue with me...
Sorry, I'm musically very picky :-/ -
Understanding the details of signal processing & sample theory involves a lot of boring math, but music recording & presentation really isn't a very complicated subject to the degree necessary to understand this timing stuff. Do a little reading on how music is recorded on vinyl records to help visualize how sound can be represented by "signals." Then just realize that those same signals can be "encoded" by a simple, but extremely fast & long, flow of numbers. If you're into audio, you'd probably really enjoy learning about some of this stuff! -
A "note" is either there or it's not. That much is pretty simple. If there is a tap & no note, that could be wrong, but maybe not. Sometimes it makes sense to be tapping between, as long as it's consistent. There is another song that does this, but I can't remember which one.
Personally I find it frustrating, but it's not correct to say it's wrong. In other words, a tap that occurs at the same frequency as the drum beat, but is in-between actual beats is irritating, but is not necessarily a mistake.
However, I do think the most fun songs are the ones where the taps most often match a primary sound (drum, guitar, voice) rather than an imaginary half-beat or whatever the actual music term is. (My education/work is in real-time embedded control involving audio & acoustics, not music specifically so I don't know that jargon.)
The timing I refer to above has to do with the placement of the center of the tap window relative to the psycho-acoustic "peak" of the sound being "tracked." This needs to be consistent. For example, a kick drum that sounds similar in 2 songs should have the tap window at the same point in time relative to the actual waveform to be consistent. This point in time would be different for different sounds (different musical instruments, for example) & even different tones (frequencies) by the same instrument. This is definitely where things get deeper & I'm sure will be refined over time in TTR.
My understanding is that the tap encoding is all done manually right now which totally lends itself to inconsistencies. Automating this process, as would be required for real-time tapping to any song, would be nearly impossible. More importantly, it would take away from the creativity in designing a good tap track for each song. Consistency is important though & I look forward to Tapulous "repairing" songs as needed to keep us happy! :) -
@Ceegers: I agree completely with your quest for tap tracks that "match" the music. I think in some cases, that isn't so easy to define, based on perception issues, but your arguments in that other thread seem fair enough to me. I haven't actually taken the time to investigate the specific songs & issues though.
I think the real issue with discussing this stuff is that it's difficult to precisely define what note or point in time in a song is being referenced. I've wanted to make posts similar to yours many times, but immediately feel overwhelmed trying to type something that adequately explains or defines what I think is wrong with the tap track. It's almost like trying to describe how a certain bird sounds with text. Have you ever looked at those phonetics or whatever they're called?
Maybe Tapulous could add a counter (tapper count) or even a simple timer (elapsed time) that would pop up when TTR is Paused? That would at least be a start in making those discussions more productive! -
PS. Pausing wouldn't be necessary. Just add an elapsed time (from start of song) to the game display. Most music players have such a thing, so it fits & sure would help with discussing tap track issues. :) -
Yeah, well I think the timer thing is cool... but what is it gonna be used for besides us pointing out spots in songs? lol -
It's obvious they are interested in improving the product, so maybe it will make the todo list. Heck, some day maybe the recording studios will have their "artists" encode tap tracks right at the "factory!" That could be bad though, because I suspect Tapulous takes our concerns far more seriously than a giant corporation might! -
lol heck yes they do -
You know, accuracy aside, and as indicated in the comments of bufulo and ceegers, there is tons of literature about how the human ear perceives sound and there are cultural differences in perception too. This leaves out aesthetics, which imo account for some of the so-called inaccuracies. I enjoy the process that led to some of the errors, actually, while other mistakes just make me mad. It's a very complex issue. -
Inappropriate?@MasterAlexZ :) Now I want to see a Mattster graphic of an exploding buffalo! Not too gross or geeky though. It has to be cool, so I can use it for my icon in online play. :)

Inappropriate?Ya playing this song gives ME hell...iMean, with the way iHold my iPod, iCan't play this song if my life depended on it...lol
-
haha ive been practicing this song...alot...for the past few hours, and now my hand is starting to shake nearly uncontrollably, and I can barely tap on any song other then Gives you Hell... -
Exactly. That song actually gives you hell. iFeel like iAm in hell just playing it lol -
but its still really good practice, im glad DX made it, its helped me a whole lot. I just FC'ed a couple of extreme songs I had been having trouble with. -
Yeah, but iPlay with thumbs because iCan't hold mine the DX way because of the flat back that my 1G has...lol -
haha yeah...if you do want to try another way to grip the iPod, you can always hook your pinky on top of your iPod headphone cord, and that serves as a pretty good anchor. Ive found that if you play while your charging, you can hold it even better with your pink, and it doesnt require a curved back either -
it kills your pinky the first few times though, but you get used to it -
How about iDon't and say iDid? lol
iCan somewhat do the DX grip in landscape for the Lady Gaga song though lol -
haha yep, everybody has a grip that works for them... -
ya, Tap Tap Tap on Extreme gives me hell too...lol -
haha Ive been trying to FC that...the only thing in that song I cant get are the string of fast notes, I think groups of 3, 4, and 5 -
@MasterAlexZ yeah, those strings of notes are the hardest part, but once you master them, you'll be good to go. I finally FCd that song after several attempts. Turns out I do better with 2 fingers on the strings rather than 2 fingers and a thumb :S -
yea ive found that too...but it would take me more then a couple of attempts = P -
haha I just found out how much easier it is to tap notes like that with my index finger...I use my right middle and ring finger...I might have to rethink my grip -
You know, iJust tried the DX grip and say good bye to my top 100 reputation (temporarily :P) lol -
haha you tried it online? -
Hell yea...but iThink iNeed to rest my hands for the rest of the day...my right wrist is dead. And btw iKinda got back on track...rank 83...from 100 with a messed up wrist...wish me luck tomorrow when iPlay (it'll be my birthday lol) -
haha good luck and happy birthday = P -
lol -
Inappropriate?haha i love dxchain's way of making combacks there genius ..its like polite but makes the other people feel ignorant aha
1 person says
this answers the question
-
Inappropriate?last time i checked there was no internat law against playing games under the influence.. 2 great tastes go great togther and dx is still better than the other 1000s of people who probably do more drugs than him anyway. just cause you cant keep up doesnt mean u have to tear others down.at least be thankful that ur system isnt eating ur flesh to the bone for the sake of the game - dx gives it his all for the love of it and deserves all ur respect
