TTR 2.6 + OS 3.0 Online Play on iPhone 3G
Ok, so after i've installed the latest OS, i though i'd give a try to online play. Me, DX, Kratos and SwimminSurfer went into various rooms to play under new conditions. I'm sorry to say, but it was horrible
21:00:45 ‹DXChain› at the first 8x point, my ipod acted like it connected and it lagged for 30 seconds after that
-most random problem ever :)
There's huge problem with arrows. it seems like players on iPods get only the side arrows while those on iPhones got none.
20:39:38 ‹DXChain› anyone notice arrows not responding?
20:39:48 ‹SwimminSurfer25› just the middle one
Also, I had a lot of lag drops and stuff like this.
Anyone willing to share their feelings about the new update+ online play, please post here.
regards. George

Inappropriate?Some important things to add:
-I was playing off a clean restart, so memory availability was not an issue
-Responsiveness was inferior than OS 2 with TTR 2.5, particularly in spots with holds + arrows/additional taps simultaneously
-As George posted, my iPod acted as if I had just plugged something to the dock port in the middle of a song, when that's impossible because my grip already secures that connection firmly even through insanely fast parts.
-If the score synchronization was bad before, it's worse now. There were way too many instances where I was shown as 1 out of #, but by the time the players returned to the lobby, the scores and places were switched around. This even happened LONG after the song was over too.
-The previous song -/+ still shows after the *following* song is finished. -
Did you notice what the streak count was when the bad behavior started? I doubt it was 255 or 256, but it would be very interesting if that were the case.
I've seen the "previous song -/+" with TTR2.5 & OS 2.2.1, so that isn't a new bug from my perspective. -
Streak count was irrelevant. And the -/+ thing was reported as "solved" several times, which is why I'm bringing it up again. -
Inappropriate?New update + new OS is going to result in many bugs.
As shown above I have noticed the middle arrow (no side yet for me) being unresponsive. On Gives You Hell earlier today on single player I missed 2 arrows (both middle) that I haven't missed before.
On a positive note, the gameplay does seem much smoother on single player. I feel like I have had many fewer dropped taps as well (at the ends of freak-a-zoid with the two holds and the taps in the middle I found that it was much smoother than before--NOTE: this is on single player)
Online brings about a problem. The games I played with the aforementioned people were filled with lag that was felt by everyone. However the score does seem to update every time I've played recently !!
From viewing my memory/freeing memory via iStat I have found that recently under 3.0 a lot more of my memory is being used than before. That could be why it seems smoother (maybe more usage of memory on ttr?) but also why it lags (less available).
I'll post any more problems I have! -
I too have just noticed more memory being used after a clean reset of the iPod. What's worse, you can't end a process/app anymore by holding the home button in OS 3.0... -
Holding the Home button on the original iPhone terminates apps just like it used to as far as I can tell. -
iStat shows FAR less Free Memory after a reboot than prior to OS 3.0 with my original iPhone as well. However, if I use iStat to free memory as I sometimes did before, I end up with almost as much free. FWIW, I've always managed to "free" the most memory if I hit Help in iStat (opens Safari), then close Safari, then use iStat to free. Prior to OS 3.0, iStat would claim about 52 MB free but now it only claims about 48 MB. I'm not sure I actually trust that iStat is accurate or benign in what it does, but there is no doubt that freeing memory in this manner resulted in better performance in TTR prior to OS 3.0. I can't say that I notice much difference now.
I've read the "white block tappers of death" or whatever you want to call them are indicitive of low memory. My guess is this is referring to memory that is dynamically allocated (during play). If iStat is accurate, less free memory could be a bigger problem for TTR now more than before OS 3.0.
What doesn't make sense is why these memory issues aren't handled gracefully by the OS and/or TTR. I really think this points to some serious bugs in TTR. -
Anyone else notice that it takes quite a bit longer for a song to start?
Is TTR dynamically allocating memory during this time? I've got a nice screenshot of a crash during this time but GetSatisfaction won't let me upload photos for some reason. Anyway, I've seen this problem with prior version of TTR & Apple OS, so this bug has been around for a while.
I've got a strong suspicion that Apple OS swaps to the card when internal RAM is all taken & for some reason this happens more during online play & especially more with Apple OS 3.0. Maybe it also has something to do with wifi memory use. Regardless, it is starting to be pretty obvious where the problem generally lies. Can you just fix it now? -
Hey everyone, in OS 3.0, you can terminate your app by holding the sleep button and let go when you see the slide to turn off and then hold down home button for about 6 seconds. This procedure will terminate an app like you did in 2.0 by holding down home button :) -
All my other games lag horribly and have weird behavior, so it's not just a matter of "hey Tapulous, just fix this" but "hey Apple, fix your crappy mobile OS." -
All my other games seem to work fine on an original iPhone with OS 3.0. The only real improvement I've noticed with 3.0 is slightly better graphics performance (smoother display). Apparently iPod Touch is behaving differently for some reason.
Does the GPU share memory with the CPU on these devices? Does Apple OS use messages for touch notification?
My bet is on bugs in TTR but there are obviously some bugs in the new OS too. -
Inappropriate?Another thing
-TTR wants to download songs I allready have. (Gives You Hell for instance) -
That means there is a new version of the song. The theme was updated. -
hangon ed, that doesn't makes sense.
whenever there are changes to a song we all ready have, we have to delete that track before we can even see it in the available to download list.
so even IF the theme has been updated, ttr wouldn't show you that song unless you deleted the current version! -
It does this for unthemed songs as well, like Tap Tap Tap -
Right, unless we update the song. If we do that, it'll show up as a new download. It'll automatically replace the old song with the new one. -
still not buying it! sorry to keep disagreeing with you.
i have seen on other posts that when songs have been fixed (for instance) we have been told that before we can redownload we first have to delete the old one.
infact gives you hell is a perfect example when dx made the new tapping sequence. couldn't even see it for download until the old one had been deleted. if thats not a song change then I don't know what is
Correct me if im wrong dx..... -
You are correct. Previously that is how we had to do it. This is a new feature that has to with theme versions. -
if thats the case, then why havent i been notified to redownload the track??? -
That's not in the feature. -
lol. sorry ed, you have just confused the hell out of me and just called your self a hypocrite!!
And I quote......
"unless we update the song. If we do that, it'll show up as a new download"
&
"This is a new feature that has to with theme versions."
either i'm losing the plot or we are coming from different angles here.
just checked all download categories, and nothing there -
If you don't see it in the downloads catalog, you already have the latest version!
I think we're talking about two different things. I'm talking about normal downloads through the catalog -- are you talking about online play? Is it making you redownload in the rooms, when you already have the song? -
ah i see. its ok, cleared it up now, thanks. jus me been dippy! it is afterall 23.26 here!
while ive got your attention it would be nice to get you input on the comments I left on...

so far no employee has left comments on this significant topic -
Inappropriate? That's why I waited before upgrading to 3.0 - just like going to Tiger-Hog in OSX whole lot less free mem. All those new features come at a price, especially the global stuff. That's how they bait you into the hardware upgrade cycle though for nongamers the pros must outweigh the cons.
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for the updates -- if you get any crashes, please send us the logs so we can address it!
-
TTR has crashed MANY times, but I don't get any crash logs. The most recent one is dated 01-25-2009! I can only guess that this means the crash was too severe for the OS error handling to trap & properly record. Got stray pointers modifying code & running wild? -
Inappropriate?Well. I updated to 3.0 at 10 AM this morning. [Yes I had an all-nighter to get 3.0 before something like last year's server crash happens.] And I have been playing Tap Tap 2 for about 30ish minutes in online play. It hasn't crashed on me any bit. Although there is some lag. All of my arrows respond. But a few taps don't.
I’m freaking happy 3.0 came out today.
-
Inappropriate?Certainly no better with OS 3.0 on an original iPhone. Online play seemed worse with more dropped tappers, especially when combined with tap & holds/releases.
I also saw the "white squares of death" for the first time. This happened after playing maybe 6 games in a row online. I restart TTR after 3 or 4, but I was curious if it would crash. Sure looks like memory management issues to me! Hard to believe this is an OS issue or lots of other apps would be a mess too. This probably has apparently spanned across multiple version of OS & TTR as well. Tried to "Add an image" (PNG from iPhone display capture) but got this: "TypeError: 'responseText' is null or not an object."
I'll see if I'm finally getting any crash logs. I didn't for a long time for some reason. I'm in no hurry to update my iPod Touch to 3.0!
I’m thinkin' software engineering is a joke!

A few more observations on Apple OS 3.0 on an original iPhone:
1) An alarm during play (online or off) cannot be Resumed. The display remains frozen. End Game does quit the game & bring you back to the home screen or TTR.
2) It's probably too early to say for sure, but WIFI is still dropping but not nearly as often.
3) Not sure if this is a result of #2 above or not, but I can play more games online before things get wacky. I really should play more to be sure, but this does seem to be somewhat improved.
4) Arrows/Shakes are not behaving the same. Sometimes it seems more sensitive to movement, yet other times it completely ignores it - very random. Could this have something to do with TTR not properly setting a neutral position at the start of each game?
5) There is a slight improvement in display smoothness, most noticeable in regular play. Online play seems to be a mess - sometimes OK, other times totally unplayable. -
after i have updated my iphone to OS 3.0, the game is not smooth enough, there're serious lags between the taps..
When i tap the right note, it says i missed, and due to the lag problem, the screen freezes for a sec, and i missed more..My rankings are dropping after the update *sob* -
Inappropriate?Much like DX's problem described in the initial post, I'm finding that in online games as soon as I get in 8x I'm suffering massive lag for a while (I didn't time it, but the estimate above of 30 sounds reasonable). I can't tell if the dropped taps are worse or not because many of my "misses" may have been because of the severe lag rather than a true tap-on-it-but-it-doesn't-register problem.
At first I thought maybe part of the problem was I left "push" on because that's supposed to have some sort of function with TTR now, but when I played with my iPhone in airplane mode and wifi only on, the situation was the same.
I’m depressed
-
Inappropriate?Arrows work perfectly (maybe even a bit better than before) for me.
BUT i now, on os 3.0, get so many dropped spheres... offline and online, while online is way worse... offline is not quite the problem, because it happens about every 5th song or something, but in online play i had on os 2..2.1 about 1 drop in 10 songs, now its like 10 drops in 1 song. what's even worse (sure, it's a good thing, but regarding the circumstances) the global score is now updating after every game (at least that's how it was yesterday evening.)
and btw: no crash so far (but i also nearly dind't have any before either)
edit: i have an iTouch 2G
I’m losing global points
-
Inappropriate?Another bug which i fount when i was testing TTR today: When you are playing Single-player, and you recieve a phone call a pause menu pops up like it should, but after the call is finished, the game freezes and you have to restart.
Happened on iPhone 3h several times -
This happens to me all the time. it is really annoying automatically -21. -
Inappropriate?i just played single player today. i wasn't able to finish viva la vida once without experiencing dropped taps. also - for the new thursday track - i played it 5 times and finished only 1 without dropped taps (i'm sure i hit them)....
just a few seconds ago i played double down under extreme and there is a part where you have to press three taps and hold them... it can't get more simple - the tap in the middle just fell through...
same seems to be the case for Tap Tap Coldplay... :-(
iPod 2g 8GB - OS 3.0 - TTR 2.6.1 - Notifications OFF -
just this second i had the problem that not a SINGLE arrow registered... (4 in a row) -
Inappropriate?i now have stopped all other network transfer in my home network and it seems that i now can play through "for what it's worth" without problems... is there anythink network related in single player mode (while playing)?
-
No doubt there are wifi issues. At the very least, TTR shouldn't hang waiting for network requests during online play. It's no big deal if your current placement in the game isn't updated every 2 seconds! It could be that the Apple OS API doesn't make this easy to do, but I seriously doubt it. -
Inappropriate?I notice a lot of dropped taps and arrows not responding. And this is on a fresh 3.0 2g ipod touch. Also, it never fails to crash right as it's loading the first song I play, themed or not. I always have to exit the app and go back in. (I'll send the logs in later) It's so frustrating...almost makes me want to quit playing. But on a good note the gameplay IS much smoother. (hope I'm not sounding like I'm trying to put down tap tap...I'm sorry if I did)
-
Inappropriate?I want to know how this is fixed, because you all seem to just recently be getting the issues that I've had for a long time now lol.
Good old ipod 1st gen... -
I wonder if the issues stem from how Apple OS and/or TTR use input devices like touch & accelerometer combined with software MPEG decoding. I wish I had the time to get up-to-speed on Apple OS & give TTR design more thought. It's an interesting real-time application. My gut feel is that TTR isn't truly taxing the hardware in a normal sense of the word. The are either odd limitations in Apple OS or API on real-time response of sensor inputs or TTR just needs to be re-engineered. There are definitely lots of bugs in TTR, but it's really odd how they've fluctuated across the various versions & platforms. -
Inappropriate?Wow, what a mess! I just updated my iPod Touch 2G to Apple OS 3 & already regret it. The arrows are very dysfunctional, even worse than on my iPhone 3GS. Have to shake VERY hard to get them to register at all yet some won't register no matter what.
Also noticed the graphics performance seems worse. Not as bad as TTR2 on the original iPhone, but almost.
