Using a 2nd gen iPod Touch is cheating.
Got one of those 2nd generation iPod Touches last week. You guys using these are cheating! :) No comparison to the 1st generation iPhones. The graphics are so much smoother. I can actually get thru the fast sections of many songs now. The smaller size is taking some getting used to. Sure wish Tapulous would move the tap spots up about 1 cm! I still only play with 2 thumbs & not really any better overall, but it sure is easier & more fun on the iPod Touch!
I've still seen all the same issues in TTR2 on the iPod Touch. Releasing a Tap-n-Hold at the wrong time is still a bug. There are still occassional stutters in the graphics, but no comparison to the iPhone. The iPod Touch actually seems able to "catch up" where the iPhone never seems to recover once stuttering starts. Graphics pipeline or memory management issue? Maybe problems with dynamic memory allocation? Does Objective C support "static" data types? Hopefully Apple fixes this one.
Both still have the missed tap bug but I really can't pinpoint the cause other than to say temperature of the screen or fingers might be an issue. How about callous fingertips? I don't ever see missed taps when playing with a freshly charged battery AND after taking a shower.
Both definitely have issues with wifi. I usually only play on battery. Anything less than about 50% battery is definitely worse. Wifi drops out all the time, especially with multiple users on the router. Maybe it's time for a new router, but I still believe both devices get excessively hot with wifi use (considerably warmer than with earlier versions of Apple OS). Maybe Apple boosted the wifi power or increased the usage (QoS?) or ? Sure wish Apple would address this wifi issue.
When I go back to playing on the iPhone now it's almost like torture. I focus on the stuttering graphics & mess up all the time. The graphics pause with every tap! I often find it easier to play some songs with the music muted & that's just not really possible on the iPhone due to all the stutter. If you are as much a visual player as audio, iPod Touch is definitely the way to go. Can't wait for the updates from Tapulous & Apple, including the new Apple hardware!

Inappropriate?Well I wouldn't exactly call it cheating -- but I do agree -- fast devices make it a whole new experience. On that note -- the next update of Tap Tap Revenge is much faster and more stable across all devices (coming soon!)
I'm excited to see what Apple has in-store for us this summer. New faster devices? I hope so!! -
I think hardware upgrades this summer & fall are a pretty safe bet. Now don't you guys go blowing all those extra CPU cycles! If we get an extra 50%, leave at least half of that alone!
Can't wait for the TTR update! Will this be out before Apple OS 3? -
ED...... How soon is the update coming??? I've being seeing you leave that comment around for couple of weeks now, and still nothing.
It's nearly impossible now to play online without the damn app crashing constantly!!! if I manage 3 songs in a row i'm lucky!! -
We've been working on final debugging & testing for the past few weeks... It's really close! -
I always exit out of the app every 2-3 songs just to be safe. That usually keeps it running pretty smoothly!
But yes update FAST = good!!! -
I hope your actually referring to TTR2, and not the NEW DMB edition that's due to drop anytime!!!
Yeah, I found the pic & link on your site about 15min ago! it's gone now though. Must have just caught you in the middle of testing layout!!! I notice the app link on iTunes works as well!!!!
Say's released 19th may, funny you haven't announced it yet...... -

see the change log -
It was purely a fluke i saw it. right place, exactly the right time i guess! Sweet layout... I won't say anymore... "Mums the word" -
It's out... I'm getting it even though I don't listen to DMB. My sisters love him and he does have a very listenable sound that must be great to tap...and some great instrumentalists working for him -
Yeah, 3 or 4 games tops before performance really takes a hit. I gave in & just restart TTR2 every 2nd game. Sometimes I forget & get clobbered in game 3 or 4. That's been happening a lot lately as I experiment with all sorts of things. My rankings have tanked!
I have noticed that the crashes are slightly different on the iPod Touch vs. the iPhone. I have never had online gaming just freeze on the iPhone. The game just gets started but the music never starts. The current place counter at the top ticks away (halts about half way to dead last) but the banner with the name of the song just stays & the music doesn't start. The screen is completely unresponsive to touch & clicking the top button on/off (thinking a wifi issue) does nothing except bring up "End Game, Resume, etc." Those buttons respond, but it either crashes or continues to hang until I close the game.
I've also seen something very similar in non-online play except there is no place counter of course. I just hangs at the opening of the game. Odd that I've never seen this on the iPhone.
Maybe it's time to try downloading all the songs again. I do recall lots of download failures when downloading all the songs on the iPod. I'm pretty sure I had no problems at all downloading all the songs at once on the iPhone. Could be related to our wifi router problems or maybe this is some sort of file management bug in the Apple OS or TTR2. -
gosh ed, you're really building up the hype about this update... I'm excited! lol -
@ Ceegers....
Let's hope all the hype is worth it this time, I think everyone is just about convinced that this update is going to solve 99% of the current issues!
It can't come soon enough for me. I do hope its out within the next week. It's already been about 2 months since 2.1.1 came out. That's a hell of a long time for an app with continuing issues.... -
So that's that "Big Surprise". . .Yay -
Inappropriate? If you don't want WiFi to drop in your 1st or 2ng-den iTouch, just plug it to the computer or wall and I can almost guarantee it won't go out (unless your distance is too great and signal is super weak to begin with).
-
Darn plug gets in the way. I'm having a hard time holding onto this little toy as it is. I need the 80s-sized version (like the giant old cell phones)!
I actually like the earphone on the bottom (vs. top on iPhone) though. I play more with earphones now which also helps a LOT. The built-in speaker on the iPhone is quite a bit better than the iPod.
I get great signal as far as I can tell (all bars everywhere except at the computer at the other end of the house). It crashes more when my wife is also online with her phone, but gets really bad when she's also on the laptop. We're on DSL with a pretty old Actiontec all-in-one. Fairly low bandwidth & long latencies out here in the country too.
I'll play a little plugged in tonite before wasting the cash on a new router. New hardware may support 802.11n too, so that's something else to think about. Not that I have anywhere near the bandwidth to my house for that to even be a concern. Heck, 802.11b easily exceeds our DSL! -
Our wireless router is definitely flaky. I suspected it, but confirmed tonite that when I lose wifi on the iPhone or iPod, all other wireless connections are lost as well. This has been going on for a few months but seems to be getting worse lately. It could also be that we've had more reason to have multiple connections going lately & just notice it more.
The still drops wifi connections when it is the only thing connect, but I'm pretty sure this is related to whatever wifi issues Apple created with OS 2.2.1.
Now I have to decide whether to upgrade to 802.11n or just get another inexpensive 802.11b/g. We'll probably be running a mixed system for at least another year. Maybe it's time to split the system instead of using these all-in-one modem/gateway/router/wireless. Not sure I have room in our media center box in the wall to do that though. I also haven't found any 802.11n that allow external antennas! Our media center box is steel, so an external antenna is a necessity. -
Inappropriate?Oh I hear you. I had the 1G and I'd sometimes play my friends 2G and I'd destroy my old high scores. With the 1G online play was horrible I'd go from global score 2150 to 2340 then lose it all to 2180 and stay there. Finally I just bought the 2G out of sheer annoyance and now I'm (slowly now) increasing my global from 2580. It makes a HUGE difference. And yeah as DX said keeping it plugged in also helps a lot with everything. As battery goes down lag increases slightly so keep it plugged in!
Plus if you are looking for a "bigger" iPod I'd recommend getting a case like the one I have:
http://www.amazon.com/DLO-HipCase-Lea...=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1242866875&sr=8-6
It's pretty much the same as that one. When you fold the leather flap back it makes the iPod a lot more grip-able. I like it :P -
Thanks for the link to the case. My wife has one for her phone but that makes the phone to big. Might be just the ticket for the smaller iPod Touch! -
No problem. I love the size the case makes my iPod I haven't had a single problem holding it! -
Inappropriate?Ed, please hurry up ! :D
Oh i'm so exited.
Actually, i never thought that there's such a big performance difference between iPhone and iPdt, but now i'm very sure :D
But i don't want to buy an iPod just to get higher scores. But fr me, it's pretty impossible to get first on famous, easier tracks, even If I'm tapping perfectly, because the taps always come with a little skip, so you have to tap a little bit earlier/later sometimes.
Anyway, I hope it comes out soon, very soon! -
Gahhhh I'm going crazy!!! I want this update!!!! -
I agree! *big nod* -
Inappropriate? It may be my imagination, but I swear our new iPod Touch is starting to have more trouble too. It seems to crash after every 2nd game of online play now & is also stuttering more often. I'm also seeing dropped spheres quite a bit more often. This sure is a strange beast of a bug. I hope whatever is going on isn't stressing the hardware!
-
You see? That's exactly what I experience as well .. sometimes the performance is quite ok, but on other days it's just worse .... gonna download the update now ;)
