hi cbweezy. on consecutive shakes, we recommend tapping yourself on the forehead.
j/k. we are aware of this issue and in recent tracks, we avoid consecutive shakes but there are still some songs that suffer from this. you can always turn off shakes in the options, if this is really interfering with your enjoyment of the game.

Inappropriate?a few topics? lol
and it is for everyone, just because they are close. -
It's NOT because the arrows are close. There are songs with arrows as close together or even closer that work just fine. There is more to it than just the space between shakes. -

Ok thanks I wasn't sure if it was keeping me from another 15k that other players were getting -
No same amount of points for both, just harder to get with Shakes ;) -
I just hate the shakes. They are killing my score, and you can't avoid them if you are playing online. They just don't work well. But somebody (DX, Krohn) could give us a few tips. I am still in danger of throwing my device to avoid losing my streak or to get a few points on the shakes. This is a big buzzkill. -
I haven't been playing online recently because of the problems with shakes on 3.0. We're all right there with you Deborah....
Xanadeath -
Thanks, Xanadeath, but if I'm not online I'm not buzzed. And somehow the big guns manage it. I see them beat me on the shakes alone. -
lol, nice bart :P -
its just practice deborah
phones have worse detection than itouches aswell
i dont use a case but many top players do
krohn has a video on youtube that may help -
Inappropriate?I used to have the same problem. I have a 2G iTouch (I don't know if that will make a difference) and I found that for consecutive shakes, not to shake so violently. I've noticed that alot of ttr users shake rediculously hard and wide for some reason (and I've managed to tone it down to just a small flick of the wrist). So, if you just quickly flick your wrist or shake without all of the extra movement, it doesn't give you a red/orange circle for the next shake. I don't know if you shake crazily like some people, and it takes time to master, but if you just flick your wrist, you'll be able to get in the next shake quickly and efficiently. I've managed to get green on most of my consecutive shakes since I've mastered that. It takes a little time to get used to (I play with thumbs atm. I don't know if that makes a difference) and grip your iPod well! I've had it slip out of my hands many times while practicing (thank god for the case!) hope that helps you out a bit :)
I’m confident
-
Ya I've tried that but it tends to not register it at all if I don't shake it hard enough. -
Same here. I've practiced and practiced on the "flick of the wrist" thing, and as a pianist my technique is to use the least movement needed to get the note played. So my fingers and hands don't move a lot. I'm the "motionless tapper," until the shakes come and then I look like an idiot being yanked around by my device, and if I try to do it any other way, it either doesn't register or it just barely makes it with no points. It's the most infuriating thing. -
Inappropriate?@cbweezy: Haha yeah it used to be the same for me. It didn't register sometimes, I didn't shake hard enough, I flung my iPod into the wall(FUN! 8D) xD I just kept at it and it registered. I don't feel it at all anymore but I can visually tell that I'm shaking hard. XD
@Deborah: I pay the piano too! :) only I use alot of movement when I play. I guess it relfecta in my taps because when I have repeated doubles I shake my arms like a maniac but then when I shake I sit completely still and flick my wrist. XD it's the funniest thing to actually watch.xD a
But back to the original topic shall we? I have a friend who shakes semi-controllably and he offered this suggestion: when you shake, dip a little bit. Somehow it works for him. If it's a left then a quick right, he shakes left and kinda uses the rebounding force while dipping his iPod right and it catches fine. XD It sounds rediculous, I know. But maybe that helps? (big stretch xD)
Or y'know, shorter slightly more controlled shakes. The force of the rebound might throw off the indicator, causing the problem. xD -
Inappropriate?Don't forget about the issues with Apple OS 3.0 wrt shakes. The acceleromenter sensitivity is a lot less in OS 3.0. I have another application with the same issue (have to shake much harder than previous version).
I'm sure there is a limit to how closely spaced consecutive shakes can be, but there are songs with shakes as close together as Heregoesnothin' that work fine.
There are really 2 seperate issues here, but they are related. They can both be solved with software updates. Hopefully OS 3.1 addresses the sensitivity issue & TTR refines the filtering of the accelerometer events in the next version. -
Inappropriate?I have an Ipod touch 2nd gen and a Iphone 3GS. The main reason I upgraded my phone was because I couldn't get the arrows to register properly on the ipod touch without practically flinging the darn thing! (I actually did a few times). On the other hand, the arrows on the iPhone work great! For the first time I've been able to get green arrows. I think it's like Bufulo said...the sensitivity of the accelerometer varies on each device. Too bad there isn't a way to set the sensitivity with an app.
-
There may be a difference in hardware between the 3GS & Touch, but I think all these differences could easily be compensated for in software.
The real unknown is whether or not Apple cares about this particular type of application enough to fine tune it. This will also mean Tapulous will have to make adjustments after the next version of the OS.
I assume you were running 3.0 (or 3.0.1) on your Touch. Compared to that, the arrows on the 3GS work great, but don't get too excited because the issue is still there, just MUCH better. I stopped playing on my Touch for the exact same reason! Previous versions of the OS & TTR worked just fine on the Touch, so we know it can be fixed in software.
FWIW, I think I've read that the accelerometer sensitivity is adjustable if you jailbreak your device. I'm not sure though because if so, I don't understand why Apple just doesn't provide access to that API. There could be a few different layers related to this though. Anyway, I'm not willing to mess with jailbreaking unless a fix isn't available soon. -
Inappropriate?I've gotten pretty good at shakes, and even getting them green. I think a lot of experimenting would do people good: the shakes aren't necessarily supposed to be done the way you think they are. Try a different way of shaking, and you might find it better than what you were doing.
I'd make a video, but I'm cheap and don't buy things like video cameras or an iphone 3gs :P -
Well are you too cheap with words to do a better description of what it is you are doing? xD Oh, what about a still shot? -
Ha ha... don't get sucked into thinking there is some trick. I can get green on arrows most of the time too, but there is a random inconsistency. It's probably due to a combination of higher priority "background" tasks & non-ideal filtering of accelerometer events in TTR.
If you can get any green shakes, you are doing just fine. More practice will probably get you a few more but don't expect any consistency until the bugs are fixed. If you're playing on an iPod Touch 2G with 3.0, don't even give it a second thought - that combination is a waste of time! -
I get a few green shakes on my 3GS. I guess you're saying if I work at it I can get more. I find they are either green or orange. Nothing in between. -
You should be able to get mostly green or light blue on a 3GS with practice. It's hard to practice when it's so inconsistent though. There also seems to be inconsistent behavior in different songs. Some songs you have to shake slightly sooner than others to get green. I usually adjust based on how the first few shakes in the song go.
You'll also probably find the arrows sometimes work better if you restart TTR each game & also if you disable as many background tasks as possible (Airplane Mode on, Auto Brightness off, Push notifications off, etc.).
Despite doing all that though, there will still be plenty of times where they just don't work worth a darn for unknown reasons & don't even register at all other times. Sometimes it seems like arrows work better for me with a slightly drained battery (like below about 85%), but then taps don't work as well.
Basically it's a mess right now, so don't worry about it too much. It's not ALL your fault. :) -
hehe, ok I'll try to describe it, but first I have to figure out what exactly it is I'm doing... describing how to do it and doing it are different things lol.
I'll get back to you later today probably -
@bufulo I'm confessing to a little "trick" I use in all tapping since I gave up the two thumbs in favor of three-fingers: I lean back so that my device is at a 90-degree or less angle from my body. This makes the front shake automatic, so I don't have to worry about it and it also seems to give me more accuracy. Thing is, although it will register most shages early so I don't miss them, I have to tilt it back down to get any kind of points for the shakes. I tried to go back to normal position but I simply don't score as well that way. -
I've seen that trick, but I tap with 2 thumbs only & that won't ever change (long story). When I have tried playing nearly upside-down or whatever, those center shakes do register automatically, but always red anyway.
From a technical standpoint, this points out a flaw in the use of the accelerometer in TTR. TTR should neutralize the position at the start of the game. There are lots of ways to hold the device & other games do a good job with this. -
Well, 2 thumbs don't work for me any more :( since I got DX'd and I can change the angle to get points for the shakes, but it sure gets me in revenge mode at the first moment. That alone is worth the angle.
The technical aspect is beyond my knowledge but it sounds like u know what you're talking about.
