What happened to my authority? Why don't you show any recent posts for my blog?
There have been a lot of questions, discussion, and speculation about why many claimed blogs display with very low authority and without any recent posts on the new Technorati site.
As anyone who used our search functionality on the old site in the past year knows, one of the major problems Technorati has been battling is how to provide good, useful search results without them being poisoned by spam, scrapers, free article reposters, and the like. We obviously failed at cleaning the data after it got into our search set, as we had numerous spam blogs with authorities in the hundreds.
Our solution, as briefly described in our Indexing FAQ and Blog Claiming FAQ, is to work from a known clean data set. It probably won't ever be perfectly clean, but try some popular keyword searches on the new site and you'll see the tremendous improvement. Sites that we have added to the clean index are being crawled, having detailed authority calculated, display recent posts (one at the moment) on our site, and contribute to other sites authority. We are continuously adding more and more sites to this index, and are working on ways to do so faster, but as you can imagine, the volume of sites to qualify is enormous.
Despite some of the speculation & hyperbole you may have seen, the only judgment call that can be inferred here is that, if a site is in the index (has higher authority and displays recent posts), then Technorati is pretty certain that it is a true blog (or news site -- we have those too). If you find any sites getting that treatment that do not belong, please feel free to let us know in the Site Details page comments on Technorati.com, or here at GetSatisfaction. But as far as reading our minds goes, that's it. If a site is NOT in our clean set, it doesn't mean anything other than that, today, that site is not in our index. It does not mean we have any opinion about the site and is not an assessment on the site's quality, worth, or usefulness. It's a safe bet that we just haven't had a chance to look at it yet.
As I said, we are continuously adding new sites, and are investigating ways to speed up & optimize that process. We hope to have a way for Technorati community members to nominate or sponsor additional sites as well, but that will be further down the road.

Inappropriate?Check your profile for your account where it list your blog. The same page as the one where you try to edit your blog - mine was showing an authority of 1 there - whereas if I searched for my blog using the search facility it came up with an authority of 513. hence my comment above your first one.
The thing is we don't know which rating external authorities pull their data from - the one which lists us with a new rating or the one which still lists us as being 1! -
Inappropriate? If it helps , the only one who can see the profile on your account page (technorati.com/account) is you. Everyone else can only access the public profile at technorati.com/people/ [username]. The problem you're asking about is simply that the correct authority does not show on the private account page.
-
Not quite - I suggest you look again at what I said 15 hours ago above James first post
Specifically I'm asking:
(1) why I can't update the details of my blog which are now out of date
(2) why my blog with its authority of 514 can't be seen in the Directory relating to Arts Blogs when it ought to be in the #4 slot
Are you saying that there isn't a public profile page for an individual's account where you look at all the blogs that personhas. I certainly remember looking at something like this in the past without logging in. -
514 is your overall authority, not your topical authority in the Arts category. We need to display the topical authorities on the blog details & account pages, I know -
The public profile is at technorati.com/people/ [username], so yours is (I'm guessing) http://technorati.com/people/pastelsa... -
See the new problem I've just raised
It's called Technorati says I don't exist
I'm not listed in the people directory under either my own name or my account name
So that basically means I can't be found in the people directory and my blog can't be found in the relevant Topic Directory. -
My blog only relates to one topic hence my overall authority and my topical authority ought to be the same thing
If it isn't then it's a pretty weird system you've got now -
Do you mean you are NOT pastelsandpencils? That's who claimed makingamark.blogspot.com -
Your 'overall' authority and your topical authority are unlikely to ever be the same, for many reasons. How many topics your blog covers isn't actually relevant in the way you might think.
We'll have complete topical authority visible at some point. However, you currently have no topical authority on any topic, most likely because you supply only a partial-content feed, and we generally need a full-content feed to accurately determine topical authority. :-( -
I am - but pastelsandpencils is not listed in the people directory nor can you find pastelsandpencils by using the search facility
What you are saying logically correct - However just one page of the people directory is showing for each letter of the alphabet at present. Another glitch?
I think each page shows about 10 names. So I guess that means Technorati is only showing about 260 names in the people directory at the moment. Meaning quite a few people are missing? -
That is completely ludicrous re topical authority!!!
Do you know what happens to my blog every time I put a full feed out? Spam blogs crawl all over it and rip off the feed and post it to their sites and then decorate it with Google Ads
I am never ever going to provide a full feed for all the same reasons that very many other bloggers only provide short feeds - we're sick of being ripped off by spam blogs - most of which used to infest this site.
If that's the way the authority works then I'm definitely out of here as it's quite clear that the Technorai authority is going to be very partial and very far from authoritative if it depends on full feeds.
It's also very clear to me that technorati is going to be a feeding ground for spam blogs if you are going to insist on full feeds.
You have at least provided me with the information for tomorrow's blog post! -
There are 2 million Technorati accounts, so the directory only list accounts for Technorati writers, people who write for technorati.com. There was no directory at all on the old site, so you've lost nothing there.
I'm not sure if the old search turned up usernames; I don't think so, but I could be wrong.
Here's what I did, though. I searched for 'makingamark': http://technorati.com/search?return=s...
From there I clicked to your blog's page: http://technorati.com/blogs/makingama...
From there, I see you've claimed that blog, and so I click on your name: http://technorati.com/people/pastelsa...
With 2 million registered users, I'm not sure any more direct path is really helpful for users of the site, but again, I could be wrong. -
I'm virtually certain that you used to be able to look up people by name or the name they used for their blogs.
Does the 2 million include all the sploggers? -
I'm well aware of the drawbacks to providing full feeds. It's unfortunate indeed. Depending on your technical savvy, there may be a way to make the full feed available only to Technorati, based on user-agent.
In any case, this is actually a key to eliminating spam on technorati.com, so while it's very difficult for some bloggers, overall it improves results for all. -
You think I'm going to make a full feed available to a site which has been long been infested with spam blogs and which will continue to be a target for spam blogs as long as you insist on a full feed!
NO WAY!!!
Somebody forgot to think about the consumer perspective when they came up with your latest business model. It might be useful for you but it's a very long way from useful to me. -
Inappropriate?Help! I've asked for help in a few places and although I see you've helped others, I keep getting left behind. I know you have tons of people to help, I would love to be one of the satisfied ones!
I can't update my profile, my thumnail shows an old blog template, I can't add tags or my feed. My authority used to be in the tens of thousands and now it is 1! Yikes and help. I am not a new blog.
I’m frustrated
-
You're not being left behind - everyone is experiencing the same problems updating site info, and there are other GetSatisfaction topics for that.. The authority=1 is only a problem on the provate account page - check the blog details pae or your public profile (technorati.com/people/bethfishreads) and it's fine -
THanks All is great now -- just wanted to add that here. -
Inappropriate?No it's not fine
The Directories are public and the blogs with the revised authorities are not being listed in the right place. (see above) -
see reply above -- topical authorities are different from overall authority -
Inappropriate? This is all very frustrating. It's like I have a third job - reading through all of the Technorati FAQs. My blog's badge (at http://thisainthell.us/blog) has some random number on it that's about 1/4 of the number that it takes an hour to find on the Technorati site. Every click goes to a "page not found" page. I can't get to my profile - I really don't want to spend hours looking through everyone else's problems to find one that fits mine. What a Charlie Foxtrot.
I’m frustrated
-
The badges are zombies! We had disabled them, but they came back to life (but don;t work with the new system, as you've found). They'll be disabled again soon, and we'll provide new ones as soon as we have a chance after dealing with all the current problems. -
Inappropriate? You disappeared my comment? Deleting it will not make my issues go away. http://npirl.blogspot.com.
I’m angry now.
-
I don't think we deleted any comments of yours? What got deleted and when? -
At the top of the page, it says, "Due to volume, only the 15 most recent replies are being displayed"
You previous comments are not among the most recent 15.
Nothing was deleted. -
Inappropriate? So when will the blog badges work again?
And when will we be able to see the list of other blogs that have linked to our blog?
julieclawson.com -
Inappropriate?I too have been relegated to an Authority of 1. Going to technorati/people/knittsings did not show any improvement - in fact it is clear the page is missing info. My name is displayed as, 's claimed blogs. Also, the last post displayed in your mini photo was from last March.
I know you are working on everyones issues. Please add me to your list of messed up blogs.

Hi,
I do know how to solve the "'s claimed blogs" issue. It looks like you haven't entered a first or last name in your account profile. If you put something there, in either or both fields (it doesn't have to be your real name), we'll use it on this page. -
Inappropriate? My authority dropped 300+ Help! Why did it do this, and now my ranking number went way up. Not a good thing
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? My blog banks.com/taxes/ has been claimed for months now, but not showing my recent posts on the following page.
http://technorati.com/blogs/banks.com...
I’m frustrated
