Hyperspaces Preferences Not Saved
Hello.
Hyperspaces on my machine (mac os leopard with all updates) loses the settings that I put in? For example if I set a background image on space 3 it loses the image after a reboot. If I rename a space to something other than Space 3 it reverts to "Space 3".
How do I get it to store my settings after restart?
EDIT: ooops I see another topic like this after posting. I am having the same problem.

Inappropriate? That's OK. If you didn't get your copy through MacHeist, you can download a nightly build and see if that fixes your problem:
http://hyperspacesapp.com/nightly.zip
I'm still looking for a few users to confirm that my fixes do, indeed resolve the problem.
I’m confident
-
Yes, there definitely will be once I hit 1.0. -
Inappropriate? Can you please try the latest release and let me know whether it resolves the problem you've reported?

Inappropriate? The problem is only happening to some people - not to everyone - and I still don't know what the circumstances are that cause it. I thought I had found a bit of a logic stuff up (and fixed it) in beta 5/6, but I'm still getting a few reports of lost preferences. Nowhere near as many as there used to be, but I do hear you guys :)
I have suspicions about what's causing this, so can I ask:
What speed is your Mac?
Is it slightly older, or under heavy usage when you reboot/shutdown?
Do you have Unsanity APE or any other applications that inject themselves into other running processes?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?* What speed is your Mac?
2.4 GHz
* Is it slightly older, or under heavy usage when you reboot/shutdown?
6 months old. Not really under heavy use most of the time.
* Do you have Unsanity APE or any other applications that inject themselves into other running processes?
Don't think so. Not sure which apps would do this, but I'm not using Unsanity.
Thanks,
ST

Inappropriate?Hi
I am having the same problem:
8 Core Mac Pro - 12 months old
Not running insanity or anything else that messes with the processes

Inappropriate?OK, I finally got a lead on this - here's what I believe is happening:
Mac OS X turns Spaces "off" before it shuts down or logs the current user out. This basically involves dropping back to only having one space. I've had a number of reports that Space 1 was keeping it's settings, but other spaces were not (this is not the same for everyone mind you!) - this is what tipped me off.
Now I just need to work out whether I need to be more proactive about saving (after each change, perhaps?) or find a smart way to detect when spaces has been disabled and save the cached versions of what I have rather than what the system currently knows about.
One step forward...
I’m confident

Yep, Space 1 was Ok on mine. Cheers - Steve -
Inappropriate?I am experiencing a similar issue with version 1.0 beta 6 (MacHeist 3 edition). I setup my preferences then shutdown. During the shutdown process I get the dialogue which says that Spaces is not enabled and needs to be. I click to enable. During startup I get the same dialogue and do the same thing (blue button). However, all my preferences get lost and only one space is available, with the name I gave it last session. So basically it's unusable at the moment. The concept is great and it's very useful when it works. Hope you can find a fix.

Inappropriate?I've had reports from testers of the next beta release (1.0 beta 7) that this is fixed. I'll be releasing 1.0 beta 7 tomorrow (AEST).

1.0 beta 7 worked for a day then the same old preferences problem was back. It's not fixed... -
Hi Bob - are you absolutely sure? Can I get you to confirm that you don't have any old copies of Hyperspaces lying around that might accidentally be being launched in place of beta 7 - I would expect to be receiving quite a few reports about this bug still happening - especially given the iLife updates that required a reboot today.
Also, just check that you didn't lock your preferences file or anything along those lines - quite a few users did that while this bug was happening. -
Spotlight search + Finder search, only one copy of Hyperspaces on my Mac... Version 1.0 beta 7 (build 830). I never lock preference files. -
Hi Bob - what exactly was lost when you rebooted?
For reference: the preferences are saved to disk whenever the preferences window is closed or loses focus - not at any other point. -
As before, Hyperspaces lost the names of all spaces but the first, lost my background pictures, forgot that I had set it not to show space names on desktop. -
Inappropriate? Is this beta applicable for those who got it via MacHeist? If not, what about us having the same problem?
-
I've got the MacHeist edition too. Just open HS preferences and hit "check now" under the "update" tab and you'll get it. Try it and see .... -

Inappropriate? This seems to be fixed for me now. Space prefs staying saved now. Good job. :D
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Well, I am on the latest version on September 2009 and I just lost my settings!!
Actually, after a reboot, Hyperspaces only showed 1 space, others were not visible. After re-starting Hyperspaces, this usually gets fixed. But I tried creating new spaces and my old settings were gone :/
I’m bugged with the bug.
-
Inappropriate? The old preferences problem showed up again after the most recent upgrade (only one space and one label showing up, then after relaunch my 8 spaces were there but only the first had its label and all background pics were forgotten). Re-entered space labels and backgrounds and everything has been OK since.
I’m relieved
-
Inappropriate?I AM ANNOYED !
I shut my Mac last night and started it this afternoon. Only 1st place and lebel is there and others are gone!!!
I cannot setup all prefs and labels on each startup!
FIX THIS ASAP !!!
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I discovered a bandaid solution when a similar situation arose some 4 months ago:
I FOUND THAT IF I MANUALLY QUIT HYPERSPACES BEFORE SHUTTING DOWN, THEN NEXT TIME I REBOOT EVERYTHING REMAINS AS I HAD SET IT.
Try this until Tony has found a permanent fix for the current bug.
Cheers. -
I am very interested in if this is still holds true - if so, I can fix this easily. My understanding of the original problem was that on launch sometimes it takes Spaces (not Hyperspaces) a while to enable itself. If Hyperspaces launches faster than Spaces enables, Hyperspaces can only see one "space", and thus doesn't load the settings for the other spaces.
I give you my word resolving this will be my focus this weekend - it's gone on far too long already. -
Inappropriate? In the case where Spaces is slow to enable at startup, a dialogue appears from Hyperspaces. If this happens just wait until Spaces has loaded (which usually it has when you see the Dock appear) before launching Hyperspaces.
Don't let this consume your whole weekend Tony! -
Inappropriate?I'm using HyperSpaces 1.0b9 on Leopard, and preferences are not saved for me. This is particularly annoying, since I was *forced* to upgrade to 1.0b9 when the previous version worked just fine for me. So now every time I start up, I have to go check and uncheck the box for showing the space number on the desktop. Please fix this ASAP.
I’m annoyed.
-
Inappropriate?Same thing is happening to me. I will try manually quitting hyperspaces before shutting down, but it's likely i will forget more often than not.
-
Inappropriate?I'm having a similar issue, but with the labels on the desktop. Everytime on startup, the labels are defaulted to show. When I check the preferences, the show labels on desktop checkbox is unchecked. I then need to check/uncheck to remove labels.
-
The labels not being saved problem is fixed in the latest preview builds - you're welcome to update:

Perfect! Thanks Tony. Awesome product
p.s. congratulations on teaming up with Newism! -
Hi Siebird, great to hear it worked for you.
Thanks for the well wishes about the new job! I probably need to blog about this somewhere (or put a statement up), but Hyperspaces is very separate to my day job at Newism. Hyperspaces is still just me, coding away at home (and loving it!)
