Transparent Menu Bar + Hyperspaces ==> Slowdown
OK, I admit it. I was killing time waiting for my wife's flight and playing Burning Monkey Solitaire from Freeverse.
I noticed that, after each shuffle, there is supposed to be an effect where the cards whirl around. If I have HyperSpaces running *and* the translucent menubar, Burning Monkey just sits there until a new deck is suddenly there.
This is on a MacBook Core 2 Duo with 4 GB Ram.
Because I am unable to use system pictures for the desktop background I have turned that off so the only thing HyperSpaces is displaying is the Space name in the bottom right.
I realize there are video memory issues keeping multiple system pictures in memory but this seems a much, much smaller memory issue.

Inappropriate?Does turning off the menubar fix anything? I've been doing some fairly involved profiling over the last 24 hours of the memory being used by Hyperspaces (video and otherwise), and whilst it's large, it's kind of expected. Keeping high resolution 24 or 32-bit images in memory is expensive and it adds up quickly.
Also - is Burning Monkey Solitaire good? I haven't had a good card game on my laptop for a long time!

Inappropriate? It did fix the lack of the "shuffle" though it is still having slowdowns (that does not appear to be HyperSpaces related).
As for the games, I like that it has a slew of games, has tracking of statistics and even some of the lame jokes. For example:
What did the monkey call his first wife?
His prime mate. *Groan*
It is getting a bit long in the tooth, but I do enjoy killing a minute here and there.
I think they have a free demo.
I’m silly

Hah! I'll check out the demo when I get 5 minutes away from Xcode.
I think your problem is probably related to my use of core animation (as are most "problems" in Hyperspaces). I'm still looking for ways to speed things up and reduce memory, but I think some of the problem is just part & parcel of using core animation as extremely as I am.
I'll look at adding a non-CA mode to a future version that should speed things up drastically (and hopefully stop interfering with other CA apps). -
Inappropriate?I've completely removed this function from Hyperspaces - it was causing too many problems, and there was no "right" way to do it. Probably not the answer you expected, but Apple doesn't seem to want to let me refresh the menu bar under Leopard, so there's not a lot of point to this setting.
