Support for GitHub
I'm very interested in seeing support for GitHub worked in. I currently use 'feeds' for that, but it's not ideal - having it as well integrated as Twitter would be very, very nice. GitHub and Twitter are the services that really provide me with a "flood" of information throughout the day; the EventBox HUD on the side of my screen currently solves that problem for Twitter for the most part, but not for GitHub.
With just a feed, I'm unable to differentiate between comments on my repositories, comments on other peoples' repositories, new repositories being created, and commits. Some of those, I consider "important" - that is, I'd like them to not be marked as read until I read them, so that when I get up in the morning, they're in my dock count as unread. Some of them, I don't consider important, and possibly don't even want in my HUD.

Inappropriate?GitHub seem to have an API so we might implement some support for it. As we're not users of GitHub (although we do use git for our version control), what sort of user-visible features are you looking for? For example, do you want to have the ability to "Add Project" which is going to add a project to the sidebar and accumulate messages from it? This is just a wild guess on my part. It would be great if you could provide some common use cases.

Regarding Add Project, my views here are the same as I just posted regarding Reddit. I already maintain lists of the stuff that I'm interested in, on Reddit.com and GitHub.com. Syncing those lists would be nice (projects or users I follow for GitHub, subreddits for Reddit). -
Inappropriate?I think the biggest deal, is that the feed notifications don't at all look integrated. Example: http://tr.im/e5m0 - if GitHub were integrated into EventBox, you could display the commit SHA1 in a smaller font, and probably in a shortened form, so it doesn't waste so much space. You could make the username, repo name, and branch all prominently visible, as well as making the commit/comment/repo description/other text visible under that. As it is, I can't really glean any information about "what happened" on GitHub with a glance at the EventBox HUD, as I can with the other services.
It'd be nice to see commits, comments, and "other events" (repository/branch creation/deletion, people following other people, people following other people's repos), each looking different, in the same way that I can immediately notice when I get an @reply on twitter (the blue background makes me look over at the EventBox HUD immediately).
To give you more generalized concepts, since you don't use GitHub yourself - as a GitHub participater, I'm very interested in the social aspects. For instance, when somebody creates a new repository, that's an important action - I really need to notice that and act on it (visit the site, see if I'm interested in the project, maybe I can contribute, maybe I can offer input on the idea, etc). When somebody comments on one of my own commits, that's also important, I want to notice that and possibly reply.
There's probably more possible functionality here, but I can't think of it off of the top of my head. But integration here would certainly be very, very cool. I expect pretty much every single GitHub user that owns a mac would suddenly become a part of your userbase. d-:

Inappropriate?I'd love to see this worked in myself. I think integration for GitHub would fit in well with the EventBox's "all in one" social network aggregation tilt, especially since GitHub's *the* social thing for a lot of the OSS community.

Inappropriate?I'm curious how "likely" this is. I'd like to buy EventBox now, because Twitter's stopped working entirely in the MacHeist version, and I hate running two HUD apps side by side ... but my being able to justify the price of the app is pretty much riding on integrated GitHub support that doesn't suck.
I'd really like to see how it's implemented before I pay for the app ... I'm pretty much on the fence here. Can I get any input from an employee? I'm worried that GitHub may not be a popular enough option to see it integrated well.
I’m concerned

There are two issues I'd like to address.
1) You can continue to use the free MacHeist Edition, we've provided a bug fix for it and it's still free as the original http://thecosmicmachine.com/downloads... (although with the same restrictions http://milen.tumblr.com/post/89528243...). This build won't expire so you can continue using that until we have GitHub support.
2) How likely is it to see GitHub in EB? Well, I can tell you GitHub is not coming to EB in the next 1 month. We've recently hired a developer who is going to work solely on new services, so it's not unlikely that GitHub will be supported sometime during the summer. But then again, we haven't fixed what services will be support and when, everything can change. So, don't rely on vague estimates because they might not be met.
The best advice I can give you is to buy EventBox when / if it's worth for you. If GitHub is the only reason to buy EventBox, don't buy it now. Buy it when we support it and you feel the implementation is good enough for your tastes.
I should also mention that we provide trial extensions to anyone who asks, so just drop us an email whenever you want to give EventBox another go.
I hope that clears up any questions you might have. -
That's exactly what I wanted to hear! Well, other than "Oh we're implementing GitHub support tomorrow", but I didn't really expect that. If and when you guys advertise GitHub support, and I can get a trial extension at that point to try it ... perfect! You guys rock (-:
