Autocomplete algorithm needs work!
I'm entering dividend transactions for three securities:
PROSHARES TR SEMICONDUCT PR
PROSHARES TR ULTRASHRT FINL
PROSHARES TR ULTSHR RU2008
For the first security, I can type “proshares tr s“, and it autocompletes the first security name, which is what I'm looking for, so I tab out of the Security field and go on.
For the second security, I can type “proshares tr u”, and it autocompletes the second security name, which again is what I'm looking for, so I tab out of the Security field and go on.
For the third security, when I've typed “proshares tr u”, it autocompletes the SECOND security name (as above), and leaves the entire name selected, so when I type the following letter (“l”) it replaces the entire second security name with the letter “l”, and tries to autocomplete with a name starting with an “l”. For some reason, the autocomplete feature doesn't realize there are multiple securities that begin with “proshares tr ult” and allow me to continue typing.
I've found only 2 ways to enter the 3rd security name in the Security field:
1. Use the popup menu to select the correct name without typing it at all (I have several hundred securities on file, so this isn't very convenient).
2. Type slowly so that I can stop before the “l” that replaces the autocompleted 2nd security name, hit RIGHT ARROW to jump the insertion bar to the end of the selected 2nd security name (deselecting the name), hit DELETE until I've deleted “RASHRT FINL”, type “S”, and voila!, it autocompletes the 3rd security name.
I've had this problem with sets of similar-named securities before.
The autocomplete feature shouldn't work that way. If I continue typing after autocomplete has found a name and filled in the field, it should remove the filled-in characters and continue searching with the additional characters I type.
It shouldn't be too hard to make it work right.
Thanks.

Inappropriate?I have a related problem with autocomplete.
I have an asset named Household Items and an expense named Household. As soon as I begin to type the category with an h, the category Household Items pops into the field. I think it should first complete Household.
I do notice that Household Items does appear first in the category list because it is an Asset versus Household which is an Expense. I think autocomplete should be based on the category name and not the category type and name. -
Inappropriate? After I first reported this 8 months ago, I'm still running into this problem with MD 2008r3 (635) under OS X 10.5.7.
Moneydance will not allow me to type the name “PROSHARES TR ULTSHR RU20000” into the investment register Security field. As soon as I hit the first “U”, it autocompletes with a different similar security name and leaves that entire incorrect name selected, so when I hit the “L”, it replaces the entire name with “L” and tries to autocomplete that, which of course doesn't work.
The autocomplete fails even if it comes up with the CORRECT security and I keep typing. Don't tell me to stop typing when the security is selected, because I'm a touch typist, and by the time I see the selection appear, I've already wiped it out with the next character. The autocomplete feature should not depend on the user entering the name slowly letter..................by...............letter to get it to work. I should be able to type the entire name, regardless of autocompletion, and it should just work.
The autocomplete procedure should not select the entire security name when it thinks it has a match. It should select ONLY the characters in the autocompleted name FOLLOWING the last character I typed, leaving the first part of the name unselected. Then if I type another character, it will replace only the trailing characters, and the autocomplete algorithm can look for another match.
This isn't rocket science, guys. It's a flaw in the user interface that should be fixed. I've seen similar problems with autocomplete when I'm typing category names in bank and credit card accounts.
I've been using MD for years, and appreciate all the hard work the developers have put into it. But this problem bites me almost every time I enter transactions, and it gets more irritating the longer it goes on!
I’m irritated

Inappropriate? The Moneydance employees no longer monitor this site. You should go post this in the official forum: moneydance.com/help. You'll be surprised at how much more responsive the Moneydance folks are in the new forum than they ever were in the past. It's like a totally different product.

Inappropriate? Thanks. I'll mosey on over to the new forum and re-post this message.
