How do I edit a transaction, and replace it's category with a split?
I need to edit an existing transaction that has already been categorized (in my case, the category is a link to another account) and replace it with a split?
I tried ctrl-L, the hotkey for "edit split", but that strangely edits the split of the last transaction I was viewing that had a split, not the current one that I'm editing. (!)
(I just deleted the rest of my example, because it turns out the example I originally quoted was not correct. Still the above question is a good one.)

Inappropriate?Double-Click on the transaction to open the edit window. Then click on the tiny scroll double arrow in the category box. If the transaction is not already the child of another split, there will be a split button at the top of the drop down list.
Just click on that button.
If the button does not appear, the transaction is already a child. Then repeatedly do 'show other side' to navigate to the parent transaction to add your split to that transaction.

Thanks for that advice. It works just like you say, and I don't know why I couldn't figure this out before. Maybe the example I had at the time involve a parent like you describe, so I'll keep that part of your answer in mind as well. I'm starting to be happy with Moneydance these last couple of days, as my problems are getting resolved, so I'm 90% sure I'll wind up registering my trial version.
