Investment Income Categories: how finely grained?
Looking for input from people who've been tracking their investments for a while: Since switching from Quicken (first to Gnucash, now to Moneydance), I've noticed that softwares OTHER than quicken create income categories for, for example, DIVIDEND INCOME, and then go further by creating a subcategory, under DIVIDEND INCOME, for EACH security that may have dividend income.
I thought I could get by with JUST Income > Dividend Income as my income categories. Then, every entry of DIVIDEND INCOME *within* each security would be separated by the ACCOUNT that it's in.
I doubt that I'm asking this clearly.
What are some examples of YOUR investment income category setups, please?

Inappropriate? For investment INCOME I use: Dividend, Interest, Short-term capital gains, Long-term capital gains
I also have EXPENSE categories of: Account maintenance fee, Custodial fee, Commission, and Rounding error
I have been having trouble tracking my investments. For example, my money market investment account earns a dividend that is re-invested, but on all the MD reports it shows my return, profit/loss, and dividend as zero.
Maybe it's my categories... I'd gladly welcome any investment tracking advice!
I’m confused
