Inappropriate?I wanted to post on the new forums a topic that we discussed on the old forums about an iPhone app & sync.
Sean Reilly stated in June that he was accepted as an iPhone developer.
We're anxiously awaiting an MD iPhone app.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?iPhone app status: I'm actively working on it, and making great progress.
I’m excited

Inappropriate?I've learned my lesson with giving an ETA. If I state a release date publicly then it will inevitably take me twice as long as I planned. If I try to account for that factor when stating a release date then it always takes three times as long.
-
Inappropriate?I want MD to kick Intuit's sorry bottom, and I believe this just might do it.
I’m giddy
-
Inappropriate?Hi Sean - MD of iPhone would be AWESOME!!! I have a short list of things that would make my iPhone perfect...and now that a syncable eWallet is out, MD is on the top of my list. Keep up the great work!

Hi Sean - any further update info on the progress of the iPhone app and the time frame for us beta testers? Thanks, David -
Hi Sean - any further update info on the progress of the iPhone app and the time frame for us beta testers? Thanks, David -
Inappropriate?Hi, I'm new here. I've been looking to replace my MS Money (2004) and really miss a synchronisation to a mobile device (my Ipaq died three years ago)
I will move to MD and buy the ipod touch app too if you can get it launched. I'm also keen to buy a linux web book (asus 901) so would probably end up buying a linux version too.
As mentioned by other posters, full synchronisation is the key, I already have .mac so please feel free to use that!!
please keep us updated, and as a programme manager building contact centre systems, I fully understand why you don't want to publish a date until you are ready...
Mooseman
I’m hoping ths turns out well
-
Inappropriate? Will I be able to use the app on my iPod Touch when I don't have an active internet connection and just sync it at a later time?
Like Mooseman, I also used to use MS Money 2004 on a PC and the mobile app on a Pocket PC and, now that I have decided to give up on Microsoft products and dump all my money into Apple related products, I got an iMac and am looking for a similar program I can use on it and also on an iPod Touch.
I’m willing to invest in this feature
-
Inappropriate?I'm an iPod Touch user, and providing you come up with an app that synchs via iTunes update I would switch from iBank in a minute. For example, I use the Things GTD app (which is what convinced me to get an iPod Touch) and it synchs when I plug my iPod into my Macbook. I have no plans to get a Mobile Me account so that option would be of zero interest to me.
-
Inappropriate?I'm interested it this, too. I'm not sure I would like all of my MD data on my iPhone, but I would like to be able to enter a transaction on the phone and have the transaction added/imported to the MD data on my desktop when I sync.
Maybe this functionality would be good for an "initial release"?
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Add me in as another Moneydance user eagerly awaiting the iPhone app!
-
Inappropriate?Hi Sean - are you still working on an iPhone app? Thanks, David
-
Inappropriate?David, Yes, I'm still working on it. Have been working on it all weekend :) Still can't give an ETA though.
-
Looking for Beta testers? :-) -
Inappropriate?Yes, I'd love to be a beta tester too. However, I'm not sure if there is a mechanism in place for that. If there is can a couple of us try it? In the past I've used Quicken, MS Money, and Kiplinger's Simply Money. Moneydance beats them all...and to have that on the iPhone will be AWESOME!
Thanks, David
-
Inappropriate? We can provide a beta version to up to at least 50 people, but we'll probably limit it to less than that so that we don't get overwhelmed. But, at this point the app is nowhere near ready for a beta test :)
-
Inappropriate?I volunteer!!
-
Inappropriate?I would love to beta test, too. If it matters, I have worked professionally in QA. I know how to write up a bug with a thorough description, how to test for repeatability, etc.
-
Inappropriate?Id beta test as well
-
Inappropriate?I'd be excite to beta-test when the time comes. *Please* utilize the "large-number/phone-style" keypad for inputing numbers, ala Pennies. This is key and I cannot believe why every finance app doesn't do this!
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Hi Sean, Any update on the status of the iPhone app?
-
Inappropriate?status update: going well, but a bit slower than I expected. I everyone who posts to this thread (up to a certain threshold) will be able to check out a beta version as soon as it is ready.
milesdavis: am definitely using the number pad :) -
If you need more beta testers, I'll volunteer. -
If you need more beta testers, I'll volunteer. -
I'm also interested in beta testing. Currently using Splash Money on the iPhone and transferring input from the SM desktop to MD. Can't wait for an iPhone version of MD -
I'd be happy to beta test it. -
would love to beta for you, been waiting for way to long for an iphone version of moneydance. -
I'd love to beta test, or even test as you develop. I have a jail broken iPhone so I can easily test nightly builds or whatever you like. -
Inappropriate?I'll volunteer to help test the beta version.
-
Inappropriate?Glad to hear that the iPhone app is coming along, and please count me in as a beta tester.
-
Inappropriate?Too cool...so glad I "asked" this question again on this forum. Can't wait to beta test it. Keep up the good work, Sean. I'm a developer too and can't imagine all of the hooks you have to work out to get it to sync with the iPhone.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?I'm keen for the Iphone version as well, and would love to beta for you.

Inappropriate?add me to the moneydance iphone app fan/looking forward to the iphone version/please please add me to your beta user list ;) great job with the app, Sean and i'm happy to wait as long as it takes for you guys to get it as right as you got the desktop version. thanks so much for all the hard work—you guys made a user-friendly, mac-friendly, wallet-friendly program to manage money—who knew it could be done?
I’m elated
-
Inappropriate?I would gladly switch from Q to MD and beta test too!! I am not thrilled with Q's decision to charge a monthly fee for their upcoming service.
-
Inappropriate?I'm a little late to the game here, but I've been using (and liking) MD since April and also a recent iPod Touch owner (loving it).
Rather than a full blown financial app, have you considered modules? You could offer incremental functionality now - some mix of both free and paid. Perhaps you could build a suite of mini-apps on your way to offering a master app. Maybe the apps could integrate as you add them - so there is one app on the device building towards the master app. Or maybe this could be parallel to the master app. I'm sure there are not insignificant technical issues to make this work.
Free apps may compel folks to try before they buy - helping with beta testing and de-bugging along the way. I see MD branded calculators, a stock ticker, account balance query and transaction search; whatever you have working now.
Its an awesome platform. Do you think Apple would let you do something like that?
This forum is weird.
Hang in there and keep up the good work! -
Inappropriate?Mr. Reilly, keep up the good work. I look forward to the day when a MD app is available for my iPhone so that I may add transactions on the go. And I too would like to be considered for beta testing.
-
Inappropriate?Hi,
Add me to the list of people that would buy MD when the iPhone app is ready. It is key for me. Although, I must say the fact that there is current progess reports on this forum may get me to buy MD earlier, knowing the iPhone app is coming.
I’m waiting.
-
Inappropriate?Hi Sean. I would love to be a beta tester also. Heck, I'd even give an alpha version a go, if you wanted early feedback! ;)
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Any updates on the progress?
-
Inappropriate?I'm also happy to serve as a beta tester. I'm excited that you're making this a priority.
-
Inappropriate?:bump: I think there is a lot of interest in this app. Is it still being developed?
-
Yes, I'm still working on it. Development on it will not be dropped. -
Inappropriate?Sean et. al.,
I apologize if this is a distraction, but I wanted to offer my services as a beta tester (which I also tossed on the blog) as well.
As far as syncing, I am currently beta testing icalc for Mariner software, and they are using bonjour to sync. I also use omni focus, and it uses the mobile me/ webdav sync. It seems to me the network sync is easier than cable as the restrictions on the SDK. You do not need Mobile me for Webdav. I know it is built into leopard and am running it on my machine. I think you can create a server for free on Windows as well. Though setting either up take some work, and a bit more than the average consumer I think. There may be issues with Bonjour and synced files. Calc just uses it to transfer them. Omni is working on Bonjour, but I do not think it is finished yet.
I started developing my own app, but as I have had no object c education (and limited java), I did not get much further than the tutorials I could find. Anyone want a blank blue app that says "Hello World" at the touch of a button? How about a calculator? No, I did not think so. Anyway, keep up the good work. Keep the faith, the one thing I have learned already is Apple is inconsistent when you need to update versions or users or whatever.
Thank you again. This product rocks.
I’m excited
-
Good points. I have already gotten Bonjour-based synchronization over wi-fi working, and plan (in a subsequent release, not the initial version) to add synchronization via DAV or something similar. -
Inappropriate?Sean, I am glad I can help. This will be wonderful. There was a quandry in both previously mentioned products about pricing. The issue is, the development takes so much work, yet there are free or stripped down apps already out there. In both cases(and yours as well I think), it is about the value of the the app. I know I would pay 50 for a full version of excel, and after that, I will not have a problem shelling out some coin to track some. Sorry if I jumped the gun talking about price. Keep up the good work.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Been very very tempting to switch to squirrel or another app that has an iphone version. But, the continued development of Moneydance keeps me hanging in. Please give us a iPhone version very very soon, I would of course still love to beta test.
-
Inappropriate?1 more quick query -- while we're waiting for the full app, is there another iPhone app that will allow us to enter transactions which can then be uploaded to Moneydance when we get home? Seems like this oughtn't to be too difficult ....
-
Hi Sarah, I don't know of any apps that can do that :( -
For that matter, that's not a bad idea... write a program that has a list of accounts, and will create a OFX or QFX file from transactions entered. Could be free to MD customers and due to working off generic formats, sold to the general public, with perhaps a discount on the price of MD should they decide to try out that financial package. Of course for MD clients, MD would be set up to make the import very easy and also create files to push into the program. Just a thought. :)
(Note for that above sales model, you'd have to sell it on the store as free, and just have the app require a activation code.) -
Inappropriate?ok, fair enough, Sean! Just do please bear in mind that I -- and lots of other Moneydance users as well, to judge by the comments I see here -- don't need an all-singing-all-dancing Moneydance app -- just a simple tool for uploading new transactions would be just fine!
Kind regards,
Sarah -
Inappropriate?I would love to beta test as well for MD iphone version. please include me. and we are all waiting holding our breath....
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate? Is there any word yet on when this might be available? I can not wait for a way to sync MD on the desktop with my Iphone.
-
Inappropriate?I'd like to reinforce Sarah's point. And I think that a fancy sync'ing iPhone app has a high cool factor but a really, really low usefulness factor. There's a whole long list of MD improvements, mostly in the reporting area, that I'd like to see at much higher priority than an iPhone app.
The only thing I can think I'd like to be able to do with MD on my iPhone is to make a note of select transactions at the time I make the transaction - for example, if I'm paying in several cheques at the bank it would be handy to enter them on my iPhone while it's fresh in my mind who they're all from. Little things like that - but even then, I suspect it might be more trouble than it's worth. In general I'd much rather wait until I get back to my computer than fiddle with the iPhone.
And just so's you know, I'm not a Luddite, I really go for cool stuff, especially on the iPhone - and in particular I could rave for hours about the EasyTask app with iPhone sync because that's actually very, very useful. It's just that I'm pragmatic about what I think would be useful for MD on the iPhone. No point in doing a lot of coding for something that people don't actually use except occasionally to show off to their friends between the beer app and the coffeeshop app. -
Inappropriate?I also want the ability to synch with the iPhone. I'm currently a Quicken user and am about to switch to MD by recommendation from a friend. iPhone access would be the tip of the iceberg for me! Any updates?
-
Inappropriate?Sean, I'm a QA Engineer at AMD for Driver and BIOS development. I would love to offer my QA experience in fettering out any bugs on the iPhone version of this app.
-
Inappropriate? Can you provide us with a timeline for the iPhone app. Reason I ask is that I have started looking at moving over to Cha-Ching on the Mac, something I've been playing with for a while and they have now just released their iPhone client. I don't want to lay down the cash for that if the MD iPhone app is imminent. And anyway, my preference is MD!
Featurewise all I personally need from an initial release is the ability to enter transactions on the go and see current balances. Work on the bells & whistles once we've got something functional in our grubby little hands!
Hope to hear something soon. -
Inappropriate?I was facing the same decision and, in the face of uncertainty, I just decided to take the plunge. I'm in the process of setting up Cha-Ching 2 (still beta) and have two iPhones working with it so far (Cha-Ching Touch).
At some point in the future, I'll likely switch back to MoneyDance when a mobile version is released. To everyone else contemplating this decision, I wish you the best. -
@John Lucket - How did you get on importing your data from Moneydance into Cha-Ching? Never managed to get it to work properly so had to start from scratch. -
@Aidan I didn't bother. I just reentered all of my transactions for this year. Best of luck! -
Inappropriate?I find the lack of a comment from Infinite Loop a bit disappointing, even if to say "we're still working on it, hang on!". There's been nothing regarding progress for 2 months on this thread. Oh well, looks like I'll be moving fulltime to Cha-Ching - goodbye Moneydance....
I’m sad
-
First, I should point out that I don't work at Infinite Loop. If I did, there would probably be even less feedback from me as to status (or even the existence) of the iphone app. :)
All i can say is that I'm still making progress and working on it nearly every day, including weekends. I don't have an ETA, but I'm hopeful that it will only be another month or two before a beta release. I wish I could give you a detailed timeline, but it just isn't possible. It will be "done when it's done" -
Inappropriate?@Sean - apologies, my Apple obsessed mind combined with the fact it was only 7.45am got my infinites mixed up!
-
Inappropriate?I'm not sure I am doing this right. I was told to post to this thread regarding my volunteering for the iPod Beta program for your product.
If I can be of any help in developing your iPod Touch software, please let me know and I'll be glad to do so.
So, how do you know how to reach me if You're interested in taking me up on this offer? -
Inappropriate?Any news on this? I am thinking about buying one of the apps out there that just let's me enter transactions on my iPod and export them to QIF, since this is all I'm looking to be able to do (as I suspect most people in here want.) Please let me know if this might be ready any time soon before I buy another program. (Although I, probably like most of us, am losing faith since I thought this would be at least ready for beta testing over 6 months ago.)
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate? You're not really expecting it, are you?
I love Moneydance but if you find an application that will sync to a desktop version, and it isn't SplashMoney, let me know, too.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? It is definitely coming. The app itself and the interface is ready for a beta but there is just one bug left to work out on the syncing (on the desktop side) before I'll start the private beta. I am very sorry for how long it is taking and has taken. The attached screenshots show that it isn't just empty talk.

Dear Sean,
Thanks so much for your reply; it's exactly the sort that this app's supporters have been looking for. I think it's fair to say we'd all much rather be informed of developmental delays—however extensive they might be—than be kept in the dark without any response to direct questions from you all.
Your post was much appreciated. All it takes is for a company to be honest about where they are with their customers; you'd be surprised how much love that buys you :)
Thanks again—and yes, me=beta tester please. -
I'd love to beta too. -
Inappropriate?Sean,
that sounds great! I'm really excited for this! :-) I like how you provided "proof" too.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Excellent! Is there any sort of official spot for private beta signup or is it just everyone in here or something?

I will set up a private mailing list with everyone who has posted here as a member. I'll then post new builds of the app to the list as well as the syncing extension that has to be loaded in the desktop moneydance. Thanks for your interest! -
Inappropriate?Shucks, now I have to actually post to this thread rather than just following it. :)
-
Inappropriate?Sean this is great news I am glad to see that you are getting real close to releasing a private beta. As stated before I am ready and willing to help out.
-
Inappropriate?Very good! I would love to be a tester. I have worked professionally in QA and know how to track bugs down as to repeatability, etc.
-
Inappropriate?I would love to help test this as well.
-
Inappropriate?I would like to be part of the iPhone beta as well. Thanks!
-
Inappropriate?Add me to list of beta testers as well! This app is one that I have been waiting for. I can test on an original iPhone and iPhone 3G. I will probably get a 3GS in August as well.
-
Inappropriate?I'd really like an iPhone app to synchronize with my desktop Moneydance. Then I could enter my data during downtime at work and never lose a transaction.
-
Inappropriate? If you've still got room, I would love to beta.
-
Inappropriate?Just making sure I'm on your mailing list for beta-testing the new app!

Inappropriate?I would love to beta test the new iPhone software. I use Moneydance everyday on my Mac.
I’m happy.
-
Inappropriate? Not wanting to be a wet blanket but I'm still very annoyed that Infinite Kind continues to waste time on this frivolity when the basic functionality of the app, which I have ALREADY PAID FOR is so woefully lacking. I like gadgets as much as or more than the next guy (I've got my iPhone 3GS already!) but how about some more attention to table-stakes functionality?
I’m annoyed that I paid my money and the app still doesn't have the basic functionality it should have.
-
Hi Howard,
Rest assured, we are working on lots of things, including fixing bugs and adding features to Moneydance. -
Inappropriate?Yo Howard--dry your blanket, mate. Whatever issues you're complaining about should be posted as other items. You're in the wrong thread.
-
Who appointed you as moderator of the thread, "mate"? -
By all means, post whatever you like. Sorry to rile you. I'm sure you have valid complaints. -
Howard--I've done some looking at your comments in other threads, now, and I can see that I pretty much agree with you. The lack of reporting options is my single biggest frustration. However, I think a good case can be made that the iPhone development actually is the single most important place for Sean to put his time.
The way I see it, the iPhone app is MoneyDance's big chance at the mainstream. Quicken's iPhone app is pitiful. I have a big hate on for Intuit, and I want to see them get their butt kicked. With the millions of users on the iPhone OS, the iPhone MoneyDance has huge potential to win converts.
MoneyDance apparently desperately needs a larger development team to handle its growing pains. It can't get much larger as is. The way I see it, if iPhone app leads to more desktop customers leads to a larger development team leads to more bugs fixed... I'm happy.
More to the point, I don't see it happening any other way. -
It's possible that the iPhone bandwagon could be a way for MoneyDance to differentiate itself and get noticed as an alternative to the other personal finance apps. But it's a big step between having someone interested enough to play with the iPhone app to having them open their wallet and actually buy the MoneyDance app for their computer. They won't do that unless it has the basic functionality that all personal finance apps need. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. I wonder how many of the Beta volunteers actually have paid money for the MoneyDance app already?! -

-
Inappropriate?OMG OMG OMG.
Please sign me up for the beta! I’ve been using QuickBank on my iPhone up until now. MoneyDance likes the QIF files it generates just fine, but a seamless sync experience would be sooooo much better!
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Hey everyone, just wanted to mention that at most 100 people can be involved in the beta test, and I will probably limit access to the first 50 that have posted to this thread. So... any more posts after this one will likely not be in the beta.
However, because the app is fairly simple, I expect to have a relatively short beta period before the public release. -
Inappropriate?Hi Sean, I also would love to beta test the Moneydance Iphone app. if you still have space. Thanks,
Gene -

Inappropriate?Great news!
-
Inappropriate? Please add me to the list of beta testers for the iPhone app. Thanks!
-
Inappropriate?Per my request 6 months ago, I'm still interested in helping with the beta test. But nevermind all that, would you consider embracing the open source notion of "Release Early, Release Often" so anyone interested can use the software? A small disclaimer indicating its a beta release and there might be glitches, plus a link to forums or a blog should suffice.
-
Unfortunately, the iPhone platform makes this type of open beta release impossible. The iPhone SDK will only allow the developer to distribute a limited number of copies of the application outside the App Store, and each copy is locked to a particular device ID.
The only legitimate way to distribute an iPhone app to the masses is via the App Store, and Apple is unlikely to approve an app for App Store distribution if it contains obvious bugs. -
Inappropriate?Would be 100% behind participating in a beta test! Live on my iPhone (1.5 charges a day) and spend a lot of time with input into moneydance (on a tight budget), have desperately been awaiting the possibility of syncing!
I’m thrilled
-
Inappropriate?I would love to be a beta tester.
-
Inappropriate?Great news- I'd also like to be a beta tester.

Inappropriate? Please sign me up as an iPhone beta tester as well!
-
Inappropriate? So this is my pig-ignorant question about the upcoming iPhone app, entirely based on the two screenshots you posted:
For me, the essentials in entering a transaction are:
Account (yup)
To/From (I'm sure that's one of the fields I can see)
Amount (yup)
Category (not sure I see that field?)
Memo (???)
Will it be possible to select a category for the transaction?
Also, will it be possible to enter a brief description of the transaction, so that by the time I upload it to my computer (possibly a couple of weeks later if I'm traveling) I can remember what the heck it was I purchased? I'm sure I could reconstruct the category if I could enter a description on the go...
Thanks for your awesome app and all your hard work on an iPhone companion :)
I’m looking forward to the app!
-
These are great questions! The initial release of the iphone app will only allow entering simple transactions (no category/memo), but the code to enter and edit all the rest of the transaction details is mostly there for a subsequent release. -
Inappropriate? The Apps should include a sync between mac and iphone
-
Inappropriate?I'm signing up!
-
Inappropriate?Very exciting. I ditched MS Money when I heard it was discontinued. I came across Money Dance and it sounded cool. Then I read about an iPhone app on the blog. That sealed the deal. I have never found a really solid PDA app that would sync with a desktop since my old Palm V with an app called UltraSoft Money about 10 years ago. I look forward to getting a solid sync solution for the iPhone. Most of the sync apps are overdone making entree to involved. Judging by Money Dance's simplicity I have no doubt they can pull off a nice slim easy to use iPhone App. Yipee. :)

Inappropriate?I am interested in the Iphone app.
-
Inappropriate?I'm very very interested in the iphone app and to test it in a beta stage.
I've an iphone 3GS 16 GB not jailbroken.
I used a lot of OS for mobiles (windows mobile, pocketpc, palm) and a lot of personal finance managers both for pc and mobile (like Microsoft Money, Quicken for windows, SplashMoney for windows/mac and for windows mobile/iphone, pocket money for iphone and so on).
I'm also available to translate it from english to italian (both mac and iphone version).
Best regards,
Maurizio -
