I'm not sure if this is what you mean...... but when a transaction is entered, Moneydance will look at the description (and maybe the amount) to determine if it is a repeat payee. If so, it will populate the category for you.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work when creating transactions from imported text files (my online bank doesn't support OFX or OFC, extracts are available only in excel which I convert to cvs and import to MoneyDance using the Text File Importer extension).
Perhaps repeat payees are detected only when importing through regular import opitons (QIF, OF, OFC)?
