Inappropriate?and I love the design, the ease of use on the real computer...the Mac..., and anything else you can think of as a virtue in a money program. Love the cachink of the register, too.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Sorry don't agree if MS Money were still being updated for the UK Moneydance wouldn't even be installed on my PC
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Like the look of MD, don't currently own but thinking of buying, Currently a quicken user living in the UK. Concerned though about the number of issues raised by people on this forum and maybe worse lack of/poor support.
Anyone convince me buying MD is the right thing to do?
BTW MD did a near perfect job of converting 4yrs worth Quicken data. -
That "near perfect job" is why I use Moneydance, too. I ran Moneydance and Quicken in parallel until I hit the 100 transaction limit, and at that point I knew that Moneydance did everything I needed, so I registered it. My recommendation for you is to keep using Moneydance until you hit that limit (which should be long enough for you to tell if you're happy with Moneydance or not) and then, if it does what you need, buy it. -
Bossross is on the money, so to speak. -
Bossross is on the money, so to speak. -
Here's the things I don't like about Moneydance:
- Support is poor, just reviewing the forum shows a lot of inactivity
- Getting fund updates is a nightmare (maybe because Yahoo Finance isn't very good either for UK funds)
- Assigning categories can be frustrating on transaction entry
- New transcations appear at the bottom of the page in a single line (my preference is a larger box make use of the screen available
- Importing QIF transactions from my bank some just didn't enter even though I confirmed the entry and hit record
Good things:
- Simple uncluttered interface (nearly put this as a disadvantage but I guess it keeps things clean)
- Current development activity
- Ability to relatively easily import from MS Money
- Hopefully, I'll just be able to save and then re-attach the .md file (unlike MS Money when it links to Money Online and becomes a PITA -
Inappropriate?I really love Moneydance on the Mac. I first tried it in 2006 (I think that's when it was), and at the time I thought it was not ready for prime time: no capital gains report, and no lot identification for sales of mutual funds, for example. Now, however, it has added those features and then some. I think it says a lot about this program and the developer that Moneydance has come so far and is still improving. When is the last time Quicken for Mac saw any improvement? And have you heard the horror stories coming from the beta testers of the new Quicken Financial Life for Mac? No thanks.
I also LOVE that the data file is the same on all operating systems. Quicken uses different data files on Windows and Mac, and conversion is a nightmare (one that I lived through as a Windows to Mac convert). That is just so inexcusable and stupid. Can you imagine if Microsoft Word or Adobe Reader used different incompatible file formats on different operating systems? -
Inappropriate?Moneydance is awesome. I normally loathe Java applications, but Moneydance is snappy and great. Works wonders for us! Bye bye Quicken you vultures!

Inappropriate?I first tried MD in 2006 and found it inadequate. It has improved quite a bit. Remember MD is relatively new and still being developed, unlike Money which is old and gets worse with each improvement. The last revision of money I am able to use is 1997. I hope MD will continue to improve, patience may be required.
The thing I like most about MD is that it does what I ask it to instead of trying to figure out what I really wanted to do. Microsoft, especially Money, has taught me to stay far away from any command that starts with "auto".
My biggest problem with MD so far is trying to navigate in the edit splits box. -
I've gotten used to closing the splits box a lot and re-opening it (lots and lots of ^w, ^l) to edit my splits. Although I'd love it if Moneydance were perfect, it's by far the best program of its sort available (from my perspective), and after trying some of the other products out there, I'm perfectly happy if my biggest issues with Moneydance are minor UI annoyances. -
Inappropriate?Mr. Yoder has a gripe that I do not because i do not use the "split" in MD nor did I in ugly and annoying Quiken. It has been years since I used a microdaft based computer, so I have not had experience with Money for a while, though my fading memory of it was that it was a useful program with a similar "kachink" sound. Good thing about open source is that improvement can be made without a committee of people in Washington state sitting around a table and trying to one-up each other. Developers develop and the MD people decide whether what was developed is useful to add. Seems good to me.
-
Moneydance is not open source (if it were, I, or someone else, would already have added shortcut keys to mark transactions as reconciling and cleared :)).
Also, hey, what's with the dig at Washington?! *I* think this is a pretty great state! ;) -
Inappropriate?EEK! Not open source. I stand corrected.
Washington is nifty. Microsoft is not.
