Two new Reports Extensions for Budgeting
For those fellow MoneyDance users who use MoneyDance to track their Budget, I have created 2 new report extensions which will help.
Detailed Budget. This enhances the existing budget report by including all transactions regardless if it is budgeted. It uses all budgets and you can subtotal per week/month/year. Download extension from here: http://code.google.com/p/moneydance-detailedbudget/
My Position. This report gives you an overall perspective of how you are doing with your finances. A balance chart shows the budgeted and actual trends over year. It will also show the forecasted balance. Details are given on your income and expenses with various charts. Also a Day by Day table is given to help create an accurate budget. Download extension from here:http://code.google.com/p/moneydance-myposition/

Inappropriate?Hey Rolf,
Would you like to add them to the official repository for awesome extensions?
details here: http://code.google.com/p/moneydance/
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Sure, I think you need to add me to the project so I can download extensions?
-
Inappropriate?Great idea. Only one problem, on the Mac if you close the window using the red close button, it also quits Moneydance.
-
Oops, I didnt notice that. I have fixed that problem and reposted updated extensions. The filename must remain the same so I had to delete the old and replace with the new. Hope you find it useful. -
Inappropriate?Great extensions Rolf. They work well for me.
-
Inappropriate?I downloaded the budget extension from the link on this page and when I went to install I got an ominous message about the program's authenticity with dire warnings about installing. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.
-
Inappropriate? This extension is not tested/reviewed/signed by Reilly Technologies/Sean Reilly/The Infinite Kind... so you need to trust the author (Rolf) directly that everything is right and your data will not get abused...
As personal finace is a very sensitive part of your life, there need to be some mechanism to make sure everything will stay save and secret - warnings about (external) untrusted/untested extensions (like warnings about unclear SSL-connections to your banks' homepage) are just one part of that concept.

Since I just downloaded and trashed the file but didn't install does that mean I haven't potentially harmed anything in my computer? -
You're right.
Just downloading *.mxt-files with a browser does not do anything harmful.
Only by installing (with and inside MD) there *may* evolve a potential security risk for your financial data held by Moneydance
[- or (in very rare cases) for your whole system. But that would also need a buggy/not updated JVM and/or leaks in your OS or further components.] -
Thanks for your help. -
Inappropriate? This is great. The option where you you can enter the custom period is the best. This what is missing from Moneydance budget feature and is must because financial months do not start on the 1st of the months
I’m thankful
-
If anyone is worried about what the extensions do, I have provided full source code for both projects. You can have a look at the Java code I did and compile yourself (it helps if you know how to program in Java code). Or if there is something you want to change with the extensions, download source code and change. -
Inappropriate?Any possibility you can have Reilly Technologies/Sean Reilly/The Infinite Kind test/review/sign these extensions and have them add them to their list of secure programs that novices feel safe in installing?

Inappropriate? Thanks for these extensions. I really enjoy the Detailed Budget extension. However, I have several budgets. (When I update my budget based on a new job for example, I usually do not delete the old budget).
When I select just my current budget, the report does not record money spent in non-budget categories. Is there anyway to change this? I'm no good with Java but I want to learn.
As an aside - I REALLY wish Moneydance would include expenses in non-budget categories. I switched from Quicken because the mac version was incapable of giving me a useful budget and I got the feeling that no one at Intuit cared. -
This is the main reason I created the Detailed Budget extension. I found I had expenses that were not in my budget and they were not being shown in the budget report. The Detailed Budget Report I did should show non-budgeted expenses. You can choose a particular budget or ALL budgets for the report. Let me know if this is still not working for you. -
Inappropriate? These extensions are fabulous! However, my Pre-Tax Deductions are not showing up. They are included in my Budget, but they were set up as Income categories rather than Expense categories (even though they are negative transactions). Could this be the cause? They appear correctly in reports that I generate with Moneydance itself's Income & Expenses feature. Is there a way that you can tweak the Detailed Budget extension to make non-positive Income transactions show up in the summary?
-
I have a similar problem -
when set up a budget item as expense with a negative amount i.e. "income" (reduced expenses) this leads to problems with the MD budgetmanager, budgetgraph on Homepage, etc. -
I am trying to adjust the Detailed Budget extension to include negative transactions. Can anyone suggest an easy way for me to create a negative income transaction to work with. When I try it with my accounts MoneyDance changes the transaction from a negative income to an expense. -
I was able to reproduce the problem with negative transactions for the Detailed Budget extension. I have fixed the problem and released a new version (0.3) on the same google code site as given above. Let me know if this fixes your problem. -
Inappropriate?Sorry to flog this to death, but can't you have Reilly Technologies/Sean Reilly/The Infinite Kind test/review/sign these extensions and have them add them to their list of secure programs that novices feel safe in installing? I really would like to try the extension but don't feel comfortable using a program that MD people haven't vetted. Thanks.
-
I agree, it would be great if Reilly Technologies test/review/sign these extensions. I have asked previously already. If anyone from MoneyDance is reading this email, please let me know what you need from me to get these extensions signed. -
Inappropriate?Thank you, Rolf. You made a valuable extension better by getting it to show negative transactions..
Any chance of getting accounts to subtotal into parent accounts in the report? Then, with a bit of formatting in a spreadsheet we will finally be able to produce a respectable report: either budget versus actual for two years, or simple income and expense report comparison for two years . Then you would be one up on Quicken,Quicbooks and MYOB: being able to show both budget and actual for two years in one report
I am using your extension .to produce my comparative income and expense report by deleting some columns in a spreadsheet.
The folks in Moneydance don't seem to appreciate that some of us are not using Moneydance merely for personal finances, but also for small associations or organisations, where we have to give a better report than what Moneydance offers.
I hope Moneydance will eventually come to the party regarding reports. In the meantime your extension is the best we have. Now, if we could subtotal those accounts into their parent accounts....
Thank you. -
I have now implemented parent categories with subtotals as an option in the Detailed Budget extension (version 0.4). You can now download the new version at the google code site given above. Remember you must change the extension filename to detailedBudget.mxt before importing. -
I just noticed the sorting was not correct when subtotals was checked. I released a new version 0.5 which should look better. -
Inappropriate?Tried to install Detailed Budget 0.3, but keep getting error:
Error: java.lang.NullPointerException -
I added a note on the home page of the extension, you may not have noticed it. Make sure you rename the extension to detailedBudget.mxt before you import otherwise you will get an error. -
Inappropriate? This my friend are the best extensions... something I was looking for ever since I started using Moneydance.
Detailed Budget being my favourite.
I really hope that Moneydance people acknoweledge your efforts asap and provide this as part of the signed extensions.
Once again thanks for this...!!!!
Cheers,
Ankit. -
Inappropriate?I just downloaded the new budgetManager 0.3. Again, thank you for this wonderful tool!
I'm still having trouble getting the results I expect. I selected the budget and time frame I want to view, but when I compare the report your extension generates to the budget I set up in MD, the budgeted totals do not match: I have some categories that are not in my budget, have no expenses in the time period, but still show up in the report.
Is there something I'm doing wrong or misunderstanding?
I’m confused
-
It seems to work perfectly when I select ALL BUDGETS, but not when I select a specific budget. -
When you select a specific Budget it will only show categories that you have included in the budget (similar to the MD budget report). When you select ALL, it will include all categories regardless if it included in a budget. I would say most of the time you would use the ALL option. -
Thanks for your help. I think I will just delete my old budgets. (I made a new one each time I had a significant life change). I need the information more than I need to remember what my budget was before I got my most recent job... Again, great tools! -
Inappropriate?Thank you for adding the sub-totals, Rolf. Thank you for listening, and doing!
It all works just fine.
I feel I can recommend Moneydance to others now. This was the biggest lack in Moneydance, and you have given us away around the problem. -
Inappropriate?Hi Rolf, can you send me an email at sreilly@moneydance.com to get your extension signed and added to the extension list so that it is easier for more people to find?
-
Hi Sean, I sent an email to you some time ago on getting the extension signed. I assume you got my reply and signed the extension. Let me know if there are any problems. -
Inappropriate?btw, "Detailed Budget" breaks for budget items that are "XXX (not prorated)" [e.g., a salary that is "Biweekly (not prorated)," or a bonus that is "Annual (not prorated)"]. Those budgeted totals show up as $0.00.
It is otherwise very much desirable to use the "(not prorated)" settings, because otherwise Moneydance will incorrectly scale the budgeted amounts (by a factor of 31days/28days) in the Budget Status bar. -
Inappropriate?I just found Moneydance and your very helpful extension about a week ago. I have been learning a lot and like what I have found.
One question about your detailed budget extension.
I have a few categories that I set up with annual budgets in MD (start date 1/1/09, end date 12/31/09). On the MD reports the annual budget amount is prorated to the period I select. For example, $1200 per year appears as $100 in Jan, $100 in Feb, etc. On the reports generated by the Detailed Budget extension the entire $1200 appears in the Jan budget and there is $0 in all other months.
I have tried running the extensions with all the various options checked/unchecked and the budget for these annual budget categories only appear in the Jan column. If Jan is not part of the period I select then the budget is $0 for these categories.
LIke I said I am fairly new to MD and your extension so maybe there is something basic that I am missing. I have not seen this issue mentioned in the other postings.
Thanks
Jim -
When I did the extension I wasnt thinking of prorated amounts, I guess thats why you see the total amount in Jan. For now to get what you want you will have to put individual amounts in each period, eg $100 in each month. At some stage I may look into implementing prorated amounts.
Rolf -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the explanation. I will keep that in mind when I use your extension.
