I have this problem, too!
Tell me when someone solves it.

Inappropriate? You're getting that error because you're trying to add more than 50 people to a group. I'm afraid we set a limit to the number. There are no current plans to allow the addition of more than 50 people to a group but we'll reevaluate in the near future.
And in the meantime we'll do a better job messaging that error. Thanks!

Just FYI - the same limit in HootSuite is the major reason quite a few people are not using it:

Raising this limit by a little (e.g. to 75 or 100) may give a big usability boost to many. -
If brizzly's group are only 50 I will not be using the service and I will go back to tweetdeck. That doesn't help me at all. My groups are 100-200 people. That is useless. -
Thanks for the feedback. -
Inappropriate?I can track 50 people just fine without a group. A group becomes helpful when you're trying to track a few hundred.
50 is just a token amount so you can say you have the feature. Increase it if you want people to actually use it.
In the meantime, you need error messaging telling people the group maxes out at 50, otherwise people just keep trying and banging their head against it.
I’m dissapointed

We'll work on improving the error message.
