If I have the previous version of the blinkM, the one that does not work with the Arduino 11, is there a way for me to update the firmware so that I can use 12?

It's not a problem with the BlinkM, but rather with the BlinkM_funcs.h Arduino library that helps your Arduino talk to BlinkM. It's been updated so it will work with Arduino-0012 (and Arduino-0011 too). You can re-download all the BlinkM Arduino and Processing sketches here:
