ThumbStrips FAQ
I wanted to consolidate some of the questions we are often asked about ThumbStrips. I hope this makes it easier to find answers to your questions.
1. If I close Firefox is my thumbstrip saved automatically?
Yes it is automatically saved, but will be overwritten each browser session. They are located here:
- Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\*username*\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\*.default\chrome\filmstrips\_ThumbStrips History from Last Browser Session.film
- Mac OS X (Leopard): ./Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/*.default/chrome/filmstrips/_ThumbStrips History from Last Browser Session.film
- Linux: /home/*username*/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/chrome/filmstrips/_ThumbStrips History from Last Browser Session.film
2. ThumbStrips slows down my machine
We optimized the code as much as possible, so here are some suggestions
- upgrade to FF3. They have improved memory leak issues and it runs much faster.
- Go to Configure -> Options -> More -> and change how often snapshots are taken to “less frequently”
3. Is there a shortcut for opening and closing the ThumbStrips window?
- Yes, F2 or CTRL-SHIFT-F
- Also, F4 turns recording on and off
I will keep this list updated as we get more great questions.

Inappropriate?CTRL-SHIFT-F4 interferes with my webdeveloper add-on. Can I disable that shortcut?
-
F2 nterferes with my spreadsheet google. Can I disable that shortcut? -
We do not have the ability to disable the shortcut right now. We have it slated for a future release, but I dont have a date yet. Sorry about that. -
Inappropriate?Unfortunately, the only way to do that is within the extension itself. I looked for any type of keyboard shortcut management software, but couldn't find anything that allows you to remap the shortcuts. Anyone else know of any software that would allow you to do that?
We will put this in as a suggestion for the next version.
I’m sad

Ok, Jonathan; Thanks! -
Inappropriate?I think it needs some sort manual 'make a thumb of this' Cause it's driving me crazy . I tried pick and drag, to no avail.
I’m frustrated

Can you give me some more info? Are you going to a site and it is not recording the thumbnail? If you are on an "https" site make sure you go to Configure -> OPtions ->More -> and uncheck "never record secure sites".
I do like your suggestion of 'make a thumb of this' since if you want to turn recording off you could force it to record just the one site you are on. RIght now you would have to turn it on and then off to do that. -
Inappropriate?I'm at the 'xcritic' web site, browsing some of his snaps from the Xrated video awards. Hit the next button, takes the next image, and just overwrites the same thumb. ie: 1 thumbnail for several hundred images. And that thumb is just the last one your on, and there's no way I've seen to even save the image beyond ALT-PRT SCR. save to disk.
And another thing I noticed, though this may be how things work. I haven't figured out the purpose of this thing yet.
I'm browsing http://www.watt-up.com/j_gallery/Aman... amanda bynes at watt.com.
the top image orange top. The entire image goes on below the horizon. But thumbstrip only grabs what it can see.
I’m frustrated

First, try going to the Configure menu and choose Sort... Just show me every visit. Thumbstrips is designed to take a picture of what is currently on the screen every few seconds and it is overwritten if you do not leave that page. With the way some sites embed viewers this means that you might have that issue. I will add that as a "requested feature".
You are correct on your second assumption - the thumbnail is captured for what you are looking at at the time. ThumbStrips cannot capture what is not in view, sorry. -
Inappropriate?I cannot find the stored thumbstrips on windows. Can you help me? You gave this C:\Documents and Settings\*username*\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\*.default\chrome\filmstrips\_ThumbStrips History from Last Browser Session.film but I don't know where to go to input this information....
-
Sorry about that ... we really need to make that easier in a future version. If you just want to open the last browser session or saved thumbstrips just open the Configure menu on the ThumbStirips and click My Thumbstrips. You should see the last browser session and any saved thumbstrips.
If you are going to the directory then go to your windows menu and click Search and then choose all files and folders... and in the search box put "filmstrips" that should find the directory. You could create a shortcut and put it on your desktop so it will be easy to find later.
I hope that helps!
