Commute Originals cross strap help.

I just bought a Commute bag from the Originals line (metal closures, waxed canvas, laptop compartment) I can't figure out the cross strap, instead of having the velcro piece like on the classic messenger bag that then hooks to the strap in the back, I have one strap that has a clip in the middle and hooks on each end. I tried hooking the strap to its respective D rings but the strap hits at waist. Am I doing this correctly?
