Paid $81 for 4 bags; hit with over 100% duties and taxes!
Hi, I'm a customer in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I just received 4 bags that I ordered during the 70% sale. After discounts, the bags cost me $81 plus $45 shipping for a total of $126US. When UPS delivered the bags today, they also collected $114.93CDN in duties and taxes!
According to the paperwork, UPS calculated the duties and taxes on the TBT invoice that was attached to the package, which showed an invoice value based on the full list price of the bags, not what I actually paid.
UPS has said that to receive a refund on the duties and taxes, TBT is required to fax/send a new commercial invoice containing the order number, waybill number and revised prices based on the actual amount paid.
I've spoken to TBT's customer service and they directed me to send an email with all the details to them. Hopefully this will get taken care of, otherwise the sale is virtually meaningless to Canadian customers. Just thought I'd post this to alert any other Canadians that are considering purchasing bags.
Apparently, TBT's off-site warehouse/shipper needs to get it's act together.

Inappropriate?UPS charges insane brokerage fees to Canadians. You did not pay $114.93 in taxes or duties, you mostly paid UPS for the privilege of using them as your broker. Check the cost breakdown by UPS, see how much was actual tax and duties. If the bags were made in the US, there are no duties on them. If your item had been shipped via USPS and thus would have arrived via Canada Post, you would have paid $5 in brokerage (flat rate, where as UPS charges a percentage of the total value declared), plus whatever the tax and duties were.
UPS has made a great number of people extremely anger over this cash grab, and is currently involved in several lawsuits. You can read more, pretty much everywhere, online (see links below). After someone shipped me something via UPS, I tried to act as my own broker, and pay the duties myself. UPS lied to me on the phone several times, and when I indicated that I knew otherwise because I'd been talking to Canada Customs, they made up another reason to keep me from avoiding their heinous fees. Even though I tried extremely hard to get around it, they won: I had no choice but to pay them in order to receive the item. I suspect they put a note on my file, as my shipment was delayed once and they forgot to put it on the truck for delivery another time. Bad luck? I don't think so.
Yes, TBT unfortunately made it slightly worse by not quoting the sale price, but look at your fees, and you'll see where the real problem is. Boycott UPS, educate those in the states (they have a much higher dollar value allowed before they are charged fees), and tell everyone you know so they don't get hit as well.
