shoulder strap length
My wife bought me a custom messenger bag; just came in yesterday. She had no idea the straps were so short, even when fully extended. Why is it that they cannot be made longer than 48 inches? Now, as per the phone call I just made, I'm out $150.00 for a bag I cannot use, and you guys won't help make this problem right. Is this really the case? as a consumer, I have other options since I paid with a credit card, but I hoped you you were a better company than that.

For the record "some guy", Customer Service was me and I wasn't defensive. From the get go you were pretty hot under the collar. I could barely get a word in edgewise. Rather than start my day on the wrong foot, I offered to forward you to my boss's VM so you could leave a message and maybe there was something she could do for you that I wasn't aware of. That's when you said, "well...that's not good enough", informed me that you were taking the charge up with your credit card and proceeded to hang up.
Interestingly, though not really our policy, it appears we're sending you 2 extra feet of webbing to get creative with your bag. I do hope the solution works for you!
I’m glad it's working out for you.

Hey man, just noticed this and I thought I would pipe in.
TimBuk2 has always had a no return policy on custom bags. Long story short, I was stuck with a pink messenger which I ended up selling.
With the exchange/return policy in mind on custom orders, their customer service has always been great to me. I think you just need to give them a chance to work, or talk to some one else there.
The other reason I felt compelled to post is that you sound like you similar purportions to me. I stand 6'3", and I have a large chest (54' jacket).
I have found that when I carry my Large TimBuk2 messenger, having the strap fully extended sits the bag quite comfortably on the lower portion of my back. Also, even though it looks a bit odd, try messing around with the extra anti-sway strap, or whatever it is called.
It sounds like you are getting your problems worked out, but load it with some stuff and try it for a day or two before you cut the strap and add a section.
And no, I don't work for TimBuk2, I just believe in standing up for companies that treat me well and make a quality product, they seem to be a dying breed.

Inappropriate?Hey Some Guy,
Sorry to hear you aren't stoked about your new bag. 48" is 4 feet of strap and has been the standard strap length on our Small-XL Classic and Custom Messenger Bags for a long time. I don't want to say that's been the case since we started production, but it's been standard for at least for 5 years, and potentially longer.
We actually were getting complaints that the strap was far too long making the loop that remains when your bag is cinched tight to your chest a nuisance. We responded to those complaints by shortening the strap on our XS Messenger to 42" shortly after it was released.
Sadly, if the bag your wife ordered was custom built in the Bag Builder as you indicated it is not available for return or exchange as indicated here: http://www.timbuk2.com/wordpress_cms/...
As we custom build each bag to the exact specifications of the designer we are unable to accept them back.
If you have any suggestions for what you would like to see as a strap length, I'm sure our design team would be all ears.
I’m sorry your bummed, but hope this helps!
-
Inappropriate?you didn't build this bag to all my, or my wife's specifications. you can't, even though you advertise that you do, since there's no way to request a different length strap. Maybe if you keep the strap length the same, or even shorten it, but make another accessory to sell people, like a camlock sewn onto the end of a foot and a half of shoulder harness material?
for what it's worth, you couldn't have the bag back even if you wanted it. I'm not really looking to return it. I researched chargebacks, and whether you'd let me return it or not is irrelevent. I can get Visa to refund my money. I'm not really after that. I just want to make what I have work for me. Will you help me do that much?
say the word, I'll contact you.
I’m conciliatory.
-
Inappropriate?Don't take offense, but I'm racking my poor little brain as to why someone would need a strap longer than 4 feet. That's *almost* as long as I am tall! I wish it was shorter, personally...but that could be because I'm a mere 5'1" tall......
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?well, I'm 6'2", and have legs probably not much longer than yours. also, my chest is bigger around than you are tall (64 inches) (imagine a quarter horse on a bicycle). when I run the strap all the way out (there's about 1/4 inch past the cam lock), the bag still feels like it's under my armpit.
I’m deformed? (or are we all just different?)
-
Inappropriate?i can think of many ways to lengthen a strap.. perhaps, cutting the strap and adding another section by either sewing/riveting/some other fastening method. if you'd like to do it yourself and take control of truly customizing your bag, i'm sure customer service can send you another strap, with which you can make an incredible 8ft long strap. and if you do, please send pictures.
I’m trying to picture a quarter horse on a bicycle right now.

Inappropriate?Ok, that makes a lot more sense.
I like programmer #1's idea, you could slice out a section in the center and sew/rivet (riveting would be more manly and you could make it look really cool) it together again. Just make sure to burn the edges so it doesn't fray. The only thing I can think of is to make sure those rivets or stitches don't hit you on the shoulder or somewhere where it'll hurt.
PS-one of my best friends is 6'8"...and every time he comes over, he hits his head on the door. I can understand your height challenges!
I’m laughing at the idea of a horse ridding a bicycle

I’m serious. tall guys have a difficult time carrying around "baggage"
-
Inappropriate?Customer service was all about "we can't take it back" when I called. Who should I contact? (oh, and I'll probably use brass machine screws with acorn nuts and a spacer plate. pictures? no problem)
I’m serious; Microsoft won't work on the train because Pulic Transit is Open Source.
-
Inappropriate?Customer service was right, we don't accept Custom Bags for return, but if you really don't want to email customer service, just post your address here and I'll get some webbing out to you. Will another 4 ft suffice?
If you don't want your address on the net, shoot an email with a link to this strand and your address to customerservice@timbuk2.com. If you want a different length of webbing, let them know how much. -
Inappropriate?lessee...
I can tell you it's invoice number 381341 that has my address, and I'm in the "center" of things on the opposite coast of the US to confirm. If that's enough, great; 2 feet will leave me some left over.
If you guys need more, say something and I'll send emails tonight when I get home. Email is monitored here at work, but oddly, I can go to any forum I want.
I’m ready for the weekend, but broke. You hiring?

Inappropriate?Jeeze, get a pair willya? I'm 6'1' and have no problems with the length of my strap. Being 6'2" doesn't make you handicapped in need of special treatment. It's not anyone else's fault that you or your wife didn't fully investigate the particulars. Next time read the "terms of sale" and try to understand them before proceeding. It looks like your only recourse is to sell it on Ebay and, of course, to grow up.

Inappropriate?"get a pair"? "Read the terms of sale"? Why don't you slow down, Dorothy, and read what I've said? You and snorcup both act as if I want to return the bag, when I've actually gone on record as saying they couldn't have it back if they wanted it. I have never wanted to return it. Customer Service was defensive with me as soon as I called and asked for help. Yeah; real men, with a pair, admit they're stumpped and ask for help. I have no idea what kind of person jumps in without "fully investigating the particulars" and then accuses someone else of what they're guilty of, so why don't you tell me a little about yourself?
I’m feeling like I'm dealing with someone from South Street. Yo! You Gotta Problem? I gotta problem wit dat.

Inappropriate?yes; as I recall the conversation, I called and said I had a problem with a custom bag, and the first words out of your mouth were along the lines of "well you can't return it". I never said that returning it was on my mind, just that I had a problem and wanted some help. You didn't ask what was wrong, you just announced (and very quickly, almost eagerly) that I couldn't return it.
You, being in customer service, didn't do a couple of things that I would lose a job for, were I still in customer service:
you didn't ask me what my problem was until after you made a point of insultingly shoving the obvious into my face. Then, when I was upset about being treated like an imbecile, you refused to own up to the fact that you caused my reaction.
You pissed of a customer, who could have walked away, and taken both the product and his money with him. Then you come in here and pick a fight with that same customer?
With service like that, Timbuk2 will not be growing much larger.
I’m out of here. reply all you like, or not; I'm walking away.

Inappropriate?Thank you, Laura.

Inappropriate?Wow! Just reading this made my head spin. Seems someone is quick to say what EVERYONE else did wrong but didn't want to hear anything. Lil defensive much? Isn't there a line in an old song that says ,"don't go away mad, just go away"? Hmmmmm....
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate? You what gets me about this guy, he is so entitled, like he did everyone a favor by not defrauding a legitimate company by gong to his credit card company and having them stop the payment.
Do you stomp the floor and shake your rattle while you write these posts?
I really wish TimBuk2 could repo your bag, because you seem to be a snooty whiny brat that doesn't deserve nice things anyways.
I hope you sew your hand to your new chuck of webbing while trying to make the strap long enough to wrap around your giant torso.

Inappropriate?Laura,
the strap arrived. this stuff is 2 inches wide, like a car's seatbelt. Evenflo makes a neat little clip for infant car seats that holds 2 strips of this stuff (and car seatbelts) together, almost as strong as just the belt, can easily be released and moved, and causes no permanent modifications.
Is there no way to offer extra straps for sale?
I’m happy; found a cool hack for my timbuk2 bag.

Inappropriate?I just got a xs custom bag. Yes the strap is too short. I'm a small guy but right away noted this problem.
I have many other bags (camera bags made by Tamrac and all have much longer straps than the timbuk2 bag. Personaly I think the strap for the xs bag shall be the same as the other bags.
I will see if customer services can send me an extra piece of strap like the guy above...
I’m frustrated
