Which Timbuk2 Bag is Right for Me?

I can't decide which Timbuk2 bag to buy, still undecided which model will fit my needs.

Quick background, I'm a university student who commutes using the metro to school.I need a schoolbag that can at least hold:

- a netbook (10.23"x7.08x1.24)
- a college level textbook or two (about 2-3 inches thick)
- a spiral notebook
- pens, calculator, and other miscellaneous stuff

So far the Timbuk2 Messenger Small and the Commute Medium caught my eye. I'm unsure about the Small Messenger because it might be too compact and not fit all my stuff. While the Commute Medium might look too big on me since I'm 5'10" with a slim frame.

From your experience, which Timbuk2 is good for this situation?

    Inappropriate?
Hey! I'm a university student too, and recently had the same question. I have a lot of the same stuff, and just worked out a Timbuk2 for myself. I carry an HP Mini netbook in a neoprene sleeve, a Mead Flex binder (11" x 10"), spiral bound course packs, 2-3 small texts and assorted crap like wallet, cell phone, etc. I don't usually carry a big textbook, but I have carried a big thing once.

Based on that, I found everything fit in a regular classic messenger small, with a little room left over. BUT, a *custom* classic small is a little bigger, and that was a roomier fit when I tried it out. (REI carries some colors that are custom to them, and the bags are custom sized, so that's where I tried them out.) Because the custom is a little taller, books can go in on their short side, if that makes sense, which makes a little more room.

The down side is that the bag isn't padded especially for the laptop, but like I said, I use a neoprene sleeve anyway. I really recommend taking your stuff to a store that sells the bags, like REI, and putting everything in to see how that would fit. Oh, yeah, and I just noticed they're having a sale on any bag with the color green in it, even custom ones, so if you like green at all, you can get a deal that would make a custom more affordable.
