Mac keyboard shortcuts to take shots not working
TinyGrab is no longer responding to the screenshot keyboard shortcut. OSX just takes it and puts it on the desktop. How should I rectify this? I believe it started after the new version.

Inappropriate?Hello,
Sorry to hear that you're having this issue, there could be a number of things at play here.
Which OS are you running? Which localised language is your OS set to? Finally, have you changed the naming scheme of your images/what are your images calling themselves when you save them?
Alternatively, if you have some sort of anti-virus protector that could also be preventing TinyGrab from doing its job.
Sorry once again.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Sorry, should have been more specific. No need to apologize, bugs happen.
I am using 10.6, localized language is English. Haven't touched the naming scheme of the images - nor does tinygrab seem to even "register" the keyboard shortcut as it did prior (the lights indicating status etc).
I have no anti-virus protector either.
I’m still sad
-
Inappropriate?Well this is most irritating.
TinyGrab doesn't actually do anything with your keyboard shortcuts (on your Mac). We simply abuse the built in screenshot capabilities. TinyGrab watches a specific folder for all screenshot images taken and then uploads them to our server. If we're not responding, this usually means that something is preventing us from finding your screenshots.
It is possible that after the upgrade automatic uploading was switched off. Please make sure that it's enabled in the TinyGrab menu item - http://grab.by/9Jn
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate? No luck. I tried it with both settings.
The screenshot that was created was named: Screen shot 2009-10-15 at 10.13.37 AM and it was placed on my desktop. -
Inappropriate?Think we've hit the nail on the head here, it appears that your system is sticking AM and PM at the end of the screenshots, this will make TinyGrab a bit useless.
TinyGrab's Mac developer will make a quick addition to the code this evening and push out an update for you to try and fix the issue. It may be emailed to you directly.
Best wishes.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?I didn't touch any settings. How might that have been changed?
-
Inappropriate? It could be a system update, or a different application forcing the change.
-
my screenshot names also use AM/PM...can this update be pushed out to all mac users? -
Sure, we will do ASAP. Look for an update possibly today. -
Inappropriate? How are we faring on this? It has been 3 days!
-
Inappropriate?Sorry, our Mac developer has been down with Swine Flu over the past few days. He should be getting around to it fairly shortly though.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Chris is misinformed. Tinygrab no longer uses the name to determine if an image is a screenshot, nor would AM/PM affect it.
Send me (tim@tinygrab.com) one of the screenshots that's not uploading. -
Inappropriate?Does anyone at tinygrab have any clue what is going on? Your firm is infuriating inept. Your "official" support staff has no clue how your software works. FTP uploading is still sketchy (and in my case doesn't work at all). Multiple updates that were promised never panned out.
This is patently absurd. Until you get your act together, you need to stop selling licenses to your software. It's the only honest thing to do.
I’m disappointed.
-
Inappropriate? This was resolved. It turns out Spotlight had been turned off.
If you are having a similar problem and Spotlight is off, consider turning one of the greatest Mac technologies on.

this solves the problem

Timi, you represent your company and you make comments like this?
It's no surprise that E.T. Cook was upset and made the comments that he did - your comments are condescending and a joke. You should be representing your company, and your product, much better than this.
If your product REQUIRES that Spotlight be enabled, then STATE SO! Nowhere on your website or your FAQ does it state this, AS IT SHOULD. Nor does it state that you HIJACK the keyboard shortcuts of the built-in screenshot capabilities of Mac in order to make your product work. In fact, you do not mention ANYWHERE how your keyboard shortcuts work at all.
Your documentation is lacking and your product is completely full of bugs.
You should be ashamed of yourself for making comments like this in public and claiming to be a professional while taking money from customers. -
Bob,
We do not hijack any key combos at all. We do not touch the operating system.
All TinyGrab does is watch your computer for any files which are tagged as "Screenshots" by your system.
I would appreciate it if you did not insult my team, or product, when we are bending over backwards to help you.
I have answered your question three times now, all within 5 minutes of you posting. Please read my responses before we reply to you any further.
We do not control keyboard shortcuts, Apple do. Apple controls its Operating System's settings, we do not. We upload screenshots, that's all we do. -
At the time of Mr. Cook's comments neither party was aware of the Spotlight requirement. -
Chris, your own response simply furthers my poor opinion of your company. Answering customer problems with snarky, elitist answers about the "greatest feature ever" instead of simply answering questions, or politely responding to customer inquiries with about questions that should be on your site in the first place for new users is not "bending over backwards" - it's called basic customer service, something you clearly have a lot to learn about.
Calling into question the professionalism of one of your team to actually DID insult a customer, publicly, is not "insulting your team". It is what it is - questioning the professionalism and quality of the people who are asking for money from people for a product that has a very iffy reputation.
If you cannot take criticism of your product and your employees, then you probably should not be offering support on a public setting like Get Satisfaction. This is called a part of doing business, something you may learn over time and with maturity.
The simple fact is, your software has dependencies and you do not clearly identify them to the users. This leads to misunderstandings and confusion. When customers question this and look for support, they get smart-alek answers instead of support. This is the way you run your business?
Thanks, but I'll be looking elsewhere for my software needs now, and letting everyone else I do business with the same thing, including my clients. There are plenty of alternatives out there that do the job just as well that don't come with the attitude. -
tinygrab employees have been great to me in attempting to resolve why tinygrab was not detecting freshly-generated screenshots. this "great to me" has included prompt and courteous e-mail communication - initiated by them, not me - and ultimately why most of us are posting to this board in the first place: resolution of the problem, in the form of the latest version of the app.
more than i can ask for in something i did not pay for. -
I don't want to enflame this any further, but I do agree the response from Timi was a bit snide. For one thing, anybody who has the knowledge and capability to turn spotlight off, probably has enough of an understanding of the technology to determine whether the benefits justify the resource costs.
That aside, TinyGrab has started to work with me on troubleshooting a few things, albeit begrudgingly. Hopefully we can figure out a few more of the issues. I do want to point out though, that I figured out the spotlight issue solo. -

Inappropriate?Case solved.
-
Inappropriate?ahh, thanks! the latest version fixed me right up.
-
Inappropriate? This brand new version brings FTP control in app too! http://tinygrab.com/download.php
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?but FTP only applies to premium users?
-
Inappropriate?Indeed it is, just as it has always been.
-
Inappropriate?Hey guys, I'm havin' a strange problem - I'm running 10.5.8, Spotlight is enabled - I've installed the version from Macheist, registered just fine - but my screenshots don't get uploaded, the icon doesn't even turn orange, nothing is copied to my clipboard - it just doesn't work. Screenshots go right to my desktop, but that's it.
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate?Jeromy,
Sorry for the long time for a response. Which format are your screenshots saving as? -
no problem Chris - I'm using png for my screenshots -
Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem as Jeromy. I'd love a solution to this.
The only difference is that I'm running 10.6.1
I’m sad! I wanna use TinyGrab! :'(
-
Inappropriate?Hmmm, it could be that your Spotlight index is a bit out of whack.
Could you please try following these instructions from Apple and see if TinyGrab works after a reindex? You might want to restart your machine after. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2409
I’m confident
-
I tried - dragged/dropped than removed the 'Desktop' folder from Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy - than rebooted - still nothing. Thanks for the help -
Inappropriate? Are you running any anti-virus/spyware programmes? These have been known to affect TinyGrab.
-
Nope, never needed 'em on a mac. I'm running Hazel (which does similar things to TinyGrab) and JumpCut (which saves the top 40 items on my clipboard) -
Inappropriate? Also reindexing your hard-drive, although tedious, may fix the issue.
We're thinking of everything we can on this one. So sorry. -
I'll give that a shot as well. Don't worry man, I know how early software releases go - it's our job to help find bugs and make the product better - that's how we give back -
still no luck - reindexed my whole drive, rebooted and still won't work. Are there any error logs I can send you guys that might shed some light? -
Inappropriate?I am also having this problem, spotlight is turned on. pics are saving to my desktop as Picture 1.png, Picture 2.png, etc
I’m frustrated
-
Have you tried running a Spotlight reindex on your HDD? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2409 -
Yes i saw the other comments regarding this, didnt help. Also just updated to 1.03. Still no luck -
Inappropriate? If new screenshots aren't being recognized, reindexing the drive isn't going to do anything. Spotlight metatags are written into the db when the file is created - reindexing will only pull missing tags into the spotlight db that were created prior. Corrupted spotlight indexes should be rebuilt automatically. If new screenshots aren't being recognized - reindexing isn't going to do anything about that. I'm hoping TinyGrab ends up implementing support for hard coded metatags rather than the spotlight tags that they currently use.
I've reenabled spotlight for the sole purpose of TinyGrab working, since I need it as part of my workflow. However, I certainly would rather not have the overhead and resources used up by spotlight indexing, and db.
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?@TinyGrab support - would you like me to put together a FAQ article detailing the process by which you can verify metatags, and their creation?
-
This would actually be incredibly useful and handy to have. Would be greatly appreciated... thank you! -
Inappropriate?TinyGrab was not uploading my files because Grab was set to save as a jpg file instead of a png file. Once I changed the setting back using Terminal, my screen grabs are now uploading correctly.
-
TinyGrab is designed to recognize jpg, I will be testing this right now. -
I was not able to replicate this issue, perhaps you weren't using .jpg? -
You are correct. It was set to save as a JPEG 2000 image. Using the command "defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg" in Terminal, I was able to upload the jpg. However, if you use "defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpeg" it will not work. All fixed here now. Thanks you. -
Inappropriate?I also will not contribute to a flame war. But I will say you can count me as a customer who will not use the software or service so long as it depends on Spotlight in the manner it does.
I have a few applications that depend on Spotlight. Spotlight still works in the background, index my main drive. What I've disabled is the part of the service that runs in the menu bar. And I will not re-enable that. It is simply terrible in comparison to HoudahSpot (which uses the Spotlight index, I believe).
Full disclosure: I received the app in the MacHeist nanoBundle.
I’m sad
-
Whether you have the menu item or not should be irrelevant. As long as the spotlight index is there, and it is constantly updated - then theoretically the metatag should be available and recognizable by TinyGrab. -
Well, then maybe there is another issue? Or it doesn't work like I think it does?
Perhaps I reached a conclusion too soon. I just get a system beep every time I try the shortcut. No picture on the desktop. No upload. -
If no screenshot shows up on the desktop, and none is taken and deleted by TinyGrab, then the screenshot was never produced. You should see a screenshot show up for a split second even if everything is working correctly. If nothing shows up, nor does it stay on the desktop, then TinyGrab is not the problem. If the metatag was the issue, the screenshot would still be on your desktop, TinyGrab just doesn't know to upload it.
What is the keyboard combo you are using? -
Sorry for the lack of a team response here, the American's are working hard on sorting out app issues and I've suffered a family loss.
TinyGrab doesn't actually take screenshots. Screenshot taking is still controlled by your OS. TinyGrab scans certain folders looking for files tagged as screenshots. If we see a recent one, we upload it. This isn't a perfect way of doing it, so we are rewriting the way in which TinyGrab detects screenshots.
I'm awfully sorry for these problems. If your computer is not producing a screenshot, then TinyGrab cannot upload it. Please check your hotkey settings for screenshots in the "Keyboard" settings panel, within System Preferences. -
Inappropriate? Many thanks for the explanation. The Screenshots shortcuts were disabled in that pref pane.
Turns out Spotlight is still working, but hidden, which was my goal all along. No problems with TinyGrab after I enabled the shortcuts. Couldn't be more pleased!
I’m thankful.
-
Inappropriate?yeah, still not working for me. all my shortcuts are enabled, they're saved to the desktop as png files and I still get nothing. No sound or movement from tinygrab. Should I try having them saved as jpgs?
