Short-URLs on Custom FTP Server?
Will it ever be possible to have short-URLs on FTP? I remember Leydon saying to me it would need a bit of code from TinyGrab to work, but would that be possible? Surely if it's an FTP server then there won't be lots of them on there, so it could delete grabs of around a month old and upload new ones with the old name?? Thereby keeping URLs short and sweet. Any chance?

Hey guys.
In order for you to be able to get short URLs on your server, much in the same way that TinyGrab does with /abc, you'd have to create a MySQL database and allow TinyGrab access. In effect, you'd have to build your own version of TinyGrab and use our app. This just isn't practical (and could drive us out of business).
We are currently looking into letting you specify how many 'digits' to have after your FTP grabs. TinyGrab will be effectively renaming the files so the URL you'll get will be http://yourdomain.tld/path/xxx.png
This is all we can do, without messing with your servers directly.
Enjoy the app and sorry for the wait on the response!

Inappropriate?Yeh :D I was just thinking last night,
""What looks better:
http://www.jdryden.me/grabs/e53a1854c...
or
http://www.jdryden.me/grabs/e73""
I know which one I would choose!
AND surely, since the TinyGrab application goes to the TinyGrab site before it goes to the FTP directory, it could form it into a short URL and then put it into the FTP directory.
Does that make sense?
I’m unsure if that made sense
-
TinyGrab's FTP would be unable to do anything with your FTP server, as in creating a short URL and then adding it into your own FTP directory.
I'm guessing that the user would have to change lots of things on their own server to get it to work (.htaccess, etc.).
Having short URLs would be possible, though. -
Inappropriate?I know for a fact that they can't get rid of the .jpg thing without you messing with your mysql database, but certainly less numbers would be good.
-
Exactly. So for truly short URLs, I'm guessing some server changes from the User would be needed - probably to many to make it worthwhile. -
Inappropriate?Rob, I was under the impression that if TinyGrab generated the long image name then surely it could make one with less numbers. Maybe even 5 or 6 would be enough.
I’m unsure 'bout this business!
-
They could do that, but it would not solve the true short URLs problem of just /abc. Also, most people prefer the long random generated numbers for privacy's sake. -
So... why not an option for either? Like on the control panel on their website. -
I'd like to have the option to set how many characters is used for the (random) filename when using my own FTP-server. Even if only, say, three letters are used, the chances of it being used already is fairly slim (and if it is, and the FTP-server returns an error, Tinygrab could generate a new filname and try again, until successfull). -

Inappropriate?Yay :D That sounds awesome :D Would make posting grabs in Twitter a lot cooler :D
Cheers Chris :D

Inappropriate?I had this idea too, so I wrote myself a daemon process that watches the clipboard. I then wrote a URL shortening program on my FTP server, and the daemon shortens all tinygrab URLs when they are copied to the clipboard.
That may give you an idea of how difficult it is. Worth it for me, probably not worth it for most people especially considering the support for URL shortening that almost every twitter client offers. -
Inappropriate? For Mac users, I wrote up an AppleScript to pull up the Clipboard and make it a Bit.ly link. I've got it hooked to a hotkey that I can hit when TinyGrab finishes uploading. Maybe one of these days, I'll do like @Carter Allen and put it in a little daemon app to automatically take care of it.
