Credit Card information on gift subscription
For Christmas, I was given a lifetime Tivo subscription for a new HD Tivo box. When I called to activate it, Tivo required me to provide them with my credit card information. I questioned this as it didn't really seem necessary given the nature of the gift.
The first representative told me that it was just required. She wasn't able to provide me with an explanation of why Tivo would need to keep my credit card information on a lifetime gift subscription.
I asked to speak with her supervisor (very nicely as I'm genuinely curious). Given the rash of credit card/identity theft, we try to only give numbers when necessary.
The response I got from the supervisor was the same thing. Basically a "Because". Upon further questioning she said they needed a cc # to verify the subscriber is over 18.
Seems like there is a better way to do this. Tivo - do you really need my cc# on a lifetime gift subscription? If so, why?

Inappropriate? This is pure speculation, but I wonder if this has something to do with being able to resolve disputes in cases of fraud. Given that these kinds of gifts are really just a string of numbers and letters, they could easily be copied/stolen. When that happens it is possibly helpful to have access to information about the accounts against which the gift certificate was applied. I suppose that information needn't be a credit card number though. *shrug*
I’m also a bit baffled.
