sad I’m frustrated

Is Todoist still being supported / updated?

There are few things that I would like to see changed and ALL have already been asked for...repeatedly. I don't want to switch to Remember the Milk, but it seems Todoist won't be getting updates anytime soon?

Too bad! It could be so much more!

I agree, it just isn't getting the attention it needs. It really is a shame, it has the potential to be the best.

Is there a definite answer on this somewhere? I understand Wedoist will not have some features I use in Todoist, so will stick with Todoist, but its missing quite a few features that would truly make it much better. I am trying out RTM, mainly for the Smart Lists to create your own search and save it, but RTM just does not have the ease of use as Todoist has that makes it fast to use.

I am in the same boat as you. I LOVE Todoist and its powerful simplicity. But I had to try out RTM simply because the reminder feature on Todoist kept breaking. I've gotten RTM set up with some good smart lists, but the interface is still really clunky to me. Especially compared to Todoist. But I have been watching these forums and the development blog to see if Todoist will start getting some of the features of Wedoist and just some love.

Yeah, RTM's interface just does not do it justice. I mean... "Tabs"!! You are kind of limited to the number of projects before your screen looks like a 1980's website :)

I have added a few Firefox extensions to make the interface better, but its still not as streamlined/fast/simple whetevr the word is as Todoist.

According to Amir Salihefnedic in a posting yesterday (29 Jun 2010) on Wedoist Help here http://wedoist.com/Help/showQuestion/33:
"I see Todoist as a completed product and it is used by a lot of people. I do still support Todoist - fix bugs and keep the service running mainly and in the last 3 years it has had very little downtime and very few severe bugs. Wedoist is supported and will be supported and it is currently under active development. Kind regards, Amir"

So I guess the answer to the original question is: "no".
    • Daryl, thanks for the catch. I'm very surprised in this modern day of web apps that any developer would consider a product as "completed", and it's very disappointing. If I saw the praise for one of my products (no, I'm not a developer) that I have seen for Todoist, I would strive to continually make it better, even with other projects in active development.
Personally, I would pay for this service, and I'm sure many others would... the interface is clean, fast and intuitive. But bugs abound, and I cannot invest in a dead product. A dead product is a product that the dev has grown bored with, or does not find important enough. There will be no more expansion, people will stop paying, then it becomes a drain on his finances. There would then be nothing for him to just pull the plug on it.
Currently I have 12 active projects in Todoist, and have used it for years. I hate to, but I have to move on to another service that's more clunky, ugly, slower than this... ONLY because they are still improving theirs. It's really sad, because this product has helped me, but it is NOT complete, and needs work.
I just wish Amir would open up the code so others could develop it and make it a product we just cannot live without.

Thanks for catching this. It is disappointing because Todoist has just a few more features that need to be developed in order for it to be perfect. I guess that isn't going to happen.

For what it's worth, the developer has said that he'd like to port some of the planned Wedoist features (like calendars) into Todoist, as well ... so there's some hope in that regard.

And I agree that I don't see Todoist as being feature-complete, though it still beats the heck out of anything else that's out there. I can think of some added features I'd like, but there are two things that it REALLY needs: documentation and marketing. Several of Todoist's best features aren't described in the primary documentation -- you have to go digging in old blog posts and such to find them. The limited documentation means that casual, first-time users are less likely to realize how good Todoist is, and are just going to move on. That, combined with the lack of PR effort, is what makes me most concerned about the app's future.

Simply put, it's not enough to create great software ... you have to let the world know how great it is.

What are the best features not documented you refer to?

I would really like to see us Todoist users form some community where we can share ideas. I have "discovered" a few little tricks to make my task management easier, and would also be good to share the way we manage our tasks, i.e. tags, contexts, projects etc. I am continuously trying to improve my productivity, and think there is a lack of hints and tips online. I actually read the RTM blog to get ideas on using Todoist!

Heh ... I should try putting together a list of "top secret Todoist features"! :) Here's one example that I discovered not long ago:

    http://getsatisfaction.com/todoist/to...

And I agree: a strong Todoist users group would be a great thing! It would have a completely different focus than this service, and would be a PR tool for the app, as well.

Another thing I experiment with is forming view queries, e.g. see my post here: http://getsatisfaction.com/todoist/to...

With no search or save searches like RTM smart lists, we are missing a very good feature to form our own custom views for certain tasks/projects/tags etc. But there is a limited means of creating views based on tags and dates. Would be good to have more documentation, or other views people have discovered.

I then create the links as Bookmarks in my Firefox (Gmarks add on) so I can quickly go to the views (due to no save feature).

I agree with all of your ideas, but there is still one thing that concerns me - the maintenance of Todoist. I can't tell you how many times I had the reminder feature break for me. And it always seemed to happen at a time when I was counting on receiving a reminder. And the irritating part was that it took the developer about a week or more to recognize that they had broken, and fix them. And now I see something similar from the Todoist Mobile site. It has been broken for a while now, and the dev doesn't know. So my concern is that I have a hard time counting on the service for fear that one day the service will be turned off and the dev won't realize it for weeks.

I know I am being a bit paranoid, but reliability is just that, 100% confidence that it will work when I need it to.

With all of that being said, I can't tell you how much I prefer Todoist over the other task managers. It works exactly like I want it to. And I am willing to give up a few features such as offline access, task import, and smart lists for a totally reliable Todoist.

This is extremely disappointing. I just started looking at it today and was planning to move my tasks over to it. Not any more. Quality app or no, any app that doesn't keep updating (more than just bug fixes) isn't worth supporting financially...

Hey, thought i'd add my 2 cents here. It's a fact that development is slow but it's there. Last feature I really wanted was added around a month back (google calendar integration) so I'm pretty happy about that. I think we should try and support Amir a bit more with premium memberships. For me it's a valuable tool and I couldn't do without it. If problems are fixed and a couple of more features are added for premium users, i think that should hold the project for atleast 6 more months.

Has anyone tried todo.ly? It looks very similar to todoist and it looks like it has full support of a dev team (not sure how big).

Honestly, todo.ly looks like such a blatant ripoff of Todoist that I wouldn't want to support them just for that reason.

It does look like a ripoff, so I would like to stay with Todoist. BUT I will go with whichever provides the best features for the way I work. Right now Todo.ly LOOKS pretty, and does actually have a few features better than Todoist in creating and moving tasks, but actually missing a lot of nice features that Todoist has. My two biggest features are adding a Gmail link using Todoist Anywhere (or adding any link not just email), and ability to show Next 3 days, split by day (or actually a custom search for any number of days and projects).

For anyone looking at different options, I would certainly recommend you take a look at Toodledo: http://www.toodledo.com/index.php?ref... which is what I ended up choosing after trying out various other options. GTDAgenda may also be worth a look although it only has a limited free account.

My $0.02... I've invested considerable time in both RTM and Toodledo, and both are quite capable. I'm currently moving all my tasks to Todoist. The Todoist display is much cleaner, and much faster and easier to use. It's not quite as capable but for me, the speed and ease of use are more important. Usual disclaimers apply, YMMV, deuces are wild, etc.

Hi David, I find your comment a bit confusing. Did you not read all the posts stating development is happening, there are updates? Some recent updates have be great. Todoist still remains my task manager of choice. The features I use it for are still not present in the other common to do list managers.
