Inappropriate?New release went up today. New features include:
* Long awaited start/end times for tasks
* Faster way to add a project in Timer
* Speed optimizations
* Comments for projects have RSS and mailing functionality
* Lots of smaller fixes
Older version is discontinued as of today. -
Inappropriate? So the view where the current list of tracking tasks is on the left and the full list of active projects is on the right is no longer available? Is the Toggl Timer the only way to track time now?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Yes, Timer is the only way to go now.
We had several reasons to drop the older version:
* Many new users did not understand that they have to click on the Start button to track time
* Many new users did not understand that they can edit time by just clicking on it - thats why we reverted back to Edit link
* Close task functionality was a confusing thing for many users
* Many users requested that Toggl should take up less space on the desktop
* It was hard for us to maintain software code for the half-dynamic half-static page setting
* It is easier to use Timer concept for the upcoming iPhone/mobile phone version of Toggl
A quicker way to use Toggl for time tracking would be to log in using the link: www.toggl.com/timer
This way you can just use one screen or tab on the browser for timetracking purposes
We really want the new one to work for you.
So, please let us know what are you missing from the new version? -
Why can't I finsh today task like i used to do with the old version, and the time on the task timer didn't match up with the report -
Inappropriate?I sure liked it before.
I cannot seem to edit the time once I start and I did that quite often if I would forget to start the timer. Also I don't see the hints link. (they were very helpful) I'm lost and I have been tracking a bunch of work. -
Hi Canine, you can edit the time in the Timer by clicking on the Edit link of the running task.
It is changed from the old version, because majority of the users didn't find it intuitive to click on the time to edit it. -
Inappropriate?First off - love Toggl and great work....
Though I have to say I liked the old layout better with the simple list of clients/projects and a start button for each. I work switching back and forth from over two dozen different clients per day so the list gets extensive and cluttered as I go along, especially over the course of a week. It may just take some getting used to - we will see. -
Inappropriate?A useful feature (in case you have many projects) has turned out to be a search box just above the project list in the Timer.
The search is a very fast way to find projects/tasks/customers with just a few keyboard clicks. -
Inappropriate?I just restarted my laptop after using the Toggl timer at work all day and noticed that it seems to have lost most of my afternoon times. I've manually entered them best as my memory could supply, but I wondered if the upgrade had something to do with that.
In future, it might be wise to warn users that something major like this upgrade is coming before it comes, so we don't lose data by trying to use the old timer during the upgrade. I suspect that's what happened to me. I was using the toggl timer all afternoon without realizing it wasn't connecting to anything any more. It gave no indication that any thing wasn't working until I restarted my computer.
I’m merely concerned

Just a new aside. Sitting here with my Toggl timer open, and I suddenly noticed that it had reset again and was adding time to a morning project like it had never been reset and updated just a few minutes before. Went to the reports and my edited time appears on the week report but clicking on day, there is no data. I think there may still be some bugs in this upgrade. -
ok, one more comment. I just accidentally started the timer with a new task and immediately stopped it and went into reports to delete it. Funny thing is that it showed under tomorrow's date. I'm still on today (the 22nd) for three more hours. I can't find anywhere to select a timezone, and this has never been an issue I've noticed before. I guess it explains why my day report is empty. I haven't worked yet on the 23rd. -
Hi Diane, we had a bug with timezones. It's fixed by now -
Inappropriate?Wow, way to make something nice and simple to use into something complicated and useless. I used to be able to log in and click the start button on whatever project I was working on....one click...easy. I cannot fathom how people couldn't figure that they have to click start to track time like you claimed. I found the old version very intuitive.
I also really don't like it forcing me to open in a new window. I use tabs in Firefox just so I DONT have to have multiple windows open. If I force it to open in a tab, the formatting is very poor.
As far as I'm concerned, this new version is a step backwards in usability. Very disappointed.
-
Inappropriate?I know I posted already, but this is truly disappointing and frustrating. What was done easily in a step or two before needs many more steps now (editing and closing). To me its not intuitive at all that when I click a project (and its easier to accidentally click now because it's the whole line instead of the button) it automatically starts a task. Then I have to edit and delete it. Additionally I am having problems with it. If I edit a task it says it started on the 22nd, but in the report it says the task started the 23rd...tomorrow! I'm sorry, I loved Toggl but I will be moving away from it as, in my opinion, this new version is very poor.

Inappropriate?Have been using old version (love it) for a while now and haven't spent any time becoming familiar with new version and it is puzzling/frustrating me this morning (Australia)..
I have also had IE shutdown on me 3 times now as well.- any ideas?
I will spend some time trying out the Toggl Timer and get back to you with update comment queries if required.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I've been using the Timer version (well, that and the Desktop) for many months now and I'm glad to see it expanding. I have to disagree with many of the comments made so far -- I find the Timer version to be *much* easier to use. I have to continually context-switch among 8 or 9 projects, each with several tasks. Being able to do that in a tight, compact list saves me a good 20 minutes in scrolling every day.
Also, I don't see how clicking on a project name to start a timer is any more time consuming/confusing than clicking a red button. Likewise with using an "edit" link instead of directly clicking the time. I never had a problem with the old interface and I definitely have no problems with the new one...
I’m pumped!
-
Inappropriate?A major lesson learnt for us is that we didn't communicate our plans for upgrade beforehand.
I personally feel bad for this and we will try not to repeat this mishap in the future.
We will have some quick fixes up in the next following days to make Timer better according to your feedback! -
Inappropriate? The report doesn't seem to allow multiple "filter" type operations anymore. For instance, if I change it to a Day view and navigate back to some day last week, when I click the option to only show billable hours, the date range reverts back to this week. The reverse also happens. Changing the date range reverts the billable option back to "Show All."
Just to throw in my 2 cents, I initially didn't like the Toggl Timer but after using it for a while I do think it has some advantages. The new version also makes Client/Project management easier. The only thing I don't like is that there isn't a manual way to remove a task from the list. Sometimes I end up with quite a lot of stuff in there and it would be nice to remove them without having to wait a week.
Anyway, great job. -
Inappropriate?Giving the new interface a try, though still in favor of the previous one. A few things I'm missing/I preferred:
1) Liked to be able to edit the time directly by clicking it (and being able to hit enter to save instead of another click to save), 1 click instead of 3 clicks
2) Really liked to be able to edit the time of a task other than the one I'm tracking time for. Now it seems I have to click the task, which starts that one time tracking, edit the time, then click back to the other task that I wanted to still be tracking for. (what was 1 click is now 4)
3) Preferred the start button instead of clicking on the entire line, less inadvertent new tasks
4) Liked the control of manually closing tasks so I could get them out of my view...doesn't seem to be a way to do that now. Also liked that my tasks didn't auto-close since I don't know when they will close now...was nice to have the control to close them when I wanted them closed.
5) Liked having a more visual depiction separating tasks I have open vs. my entire list (left and right columns), especially when using full-screen as a browser tab instead of a popup. The top/bottom thing could be better if there was a line or something separating them and also if I could close tasks manually, otherwise I now have tasks I'm tracking today mixed with tasks I'm not tracking today under the same project at the top. -
Have to say I agree with most of these. I've been using the timer for awhile, but having all the projects listed together when I'm only in and out of 2 or 3 on any given day, does make for a lot of scrolling. -
I just noticed that the new timer bumps the projects in use to the top of the list. I like this a lot better than the old timer. Thanks! -
Hi Diane, use the search box to easily find a project in a long list -
Inappropriate?Did I really lose all the time I had tracked up to this point on open projects? I cannot find out ho to grab what I had up to this point. Argh!!!! When I start the timer for a project now it starts from 0 not where I was.
I agree with all the posters. Not only was the lack of communication a huge mess up with your loyal users, but moving to a more complication interface makes little sense to me.
-
No, it's just the new style of task management. Projects don't appear if they're not currently timing (I believe). Check your Report tab and search for the project. It should show you the correct time you spent on it.
Although I could agree it's more complicated. -
Inappropriate?I tried out the new Toggl for a bit. I know the devs must have put thought and time into the redesign, and I appreciate that they're willing to make things easier for everyone.
I do see some positives:
1. The popup Toggl Timer is great. I didn't realize how much I prefer Toggl being in a new Window than taking up an entire tab. Much faster using it. Also, I get to use a browser sidebar easily, which is great (although I think it's a bit buggy, but those will probably be fixed). Some people complain about having to click an extra link, but I think the extra step is worth it (and again, throw it in a sidebar for easy access)
2. Start-End times are nice. ^_^ Definitely will have its uses in the future.
3. The Edit button does seem more logical to me. It took me a while on the previous version to learn I have to stop the Timer to edit time, but the button (while an extra click) is a good choice.
4. Auto-starting the timer is also a logical move. This is a case where it saves a click. Clearly if I add a task, I'm probably going to be working on it. =)
5. Search is also a nice addition. Currently, I don't have too many tasks to utilize it, but it certainly doesn't hurt.
But I do see some problems:
1. I don't like how I can't quickly see the time spent on a task from the timer list. I liked that feature in the previous version. Also, the way the list is laid out just confuses me more than the previous version. I prefer the list of all currently open tasks, and having quick access to them.
2. I think the Close Task feature was clear. I liked personally hiding tasks, since it helped me feel more organized.
The positives may outnumber the negatives, but the negatives are big ones. I would much prefer a Toggl that takes the new features, but uses the same Task management as the older one (quick access to all tasks, closing tasks).
Overall: Fine update, but colossal differences make me cringe.
I’m undecided

Inappropriate? We have had an overwhelming feedback requesting to keep using the 'old' version of Toggl.
Vox populi - vox dei, as the old Romans used to say. We'll put the old version back live later today (it takes time as there are some compatibility issues that need to be resolved). And for a while both versions of timetracking are available.
We promise not to make any more such harsh switches in user interfaces in the future. And we'll keep the 'old' way of timetracking up until there is a widely accepted new version that works for both ways. -
Inappropriate?Hi there, the Classic Toggl version is back again. Just click on the 'Old version' link in Toggl.
-
Inappropriate? We have made several small releases during last week, which were mainly fixing numerous small issues and bugs. Timezone problems, reporting issues, some Timer clitches, etc.
