Make the TomTom map update software preserve settings
I updated my TomTom's map only to find that all my favorites had been deleted. I checked their support site and they provide a simple set of steps for copying your favorites and settings and then replacing them after the maps have been updated: http://us.support.tomtom.com/cgi-bin/...
Unfortunately, it was too late -- I'd already lost everything. I'd like to suggest that the map installation software take care of this for me so I don't have to remember to do it, and so people in the future don't have to find out the hard way that the map installation software deletes all their data.

Inappropriate?I agree. This is an example of really shoddy programming. If all the settings are in a single file, they should simply either don't overwrite that file or back that file up prior to installing the new map.
Specially now that they offer a quarterly map subscription update that is done automatically, this is even more important.
