Opportunity to weigh in: future of Santa Clara County transportation
Many great ideas at TransitCamp! We have to feed some of them into the planning process so the ideas can influence adopted goals, criteria, funding.
Valley Transportation Plan Update Process
The Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) periodically updates its 25-year long-range transportation Valley Transportation Plan (VTP). The last plan, VTP 2030, was adopted by the VTA Board of Directors in February 2005. The update for the VTP is underway and generally tracks in advance of the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) update which is undertaken by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC).
Community Feedback
At this point in the development of VTP2035, VTA is asking for input from the public regarding the projects lists submitted. VTA has created two avenues for providing feedback: community meetings and an online survey.

As part of the VTP development process, the cities, towns and County of Santa Clara submit projects to VTA for funding that they would like to see implemented within the timeframe of the plan. Since there are more projects submitted than there is funding available, VTA must place projects in groups that can be funded with the expected revenues over the life of the plan (financially constrained) and those which must wait for additional, yet to be obtained funds (financially un-constrained).
This is an ongoing process that is expected to continue through 2008 with a plan adoption by the end of the year. At the end of this process, VTA's Board of Directors will adopt the Valley Transportation Plan 2035 which will articulate a countywide vision for transportation, support the regional vision for transportation in the Bay Area, and outline transportation planning, projects and programs for Santa Clara County.
The VTP organizes potential projects into the ten categories listed below. Over the next month, VTA will prepare draft constrained project lists to be submitted to MTC for consideration in the RTP. These lists will be subject to revisions over the next several months as discussions continue at the county and regional levels. Click on the program area links below to view the draft (unconstrained) projects lists for each funding category.
Check back for updates as the process proceeds over the next several months.

Inappropriate?A 25-year plan? Wow. I had no idea. Do you work for the VTA? What are soundwalls?
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?I don't work for the VTA -- I'm on their board of directors. Sound walls are those walls built by the highway to protect the adjacent homes from the freeway noise.
-
Inappropriate?Oh, those things. Cool. I've seen those.
Wow, there is so much to take in when it comes to Bay Area transportation options. You don't happen to know anyone who blogs about this subject in particular, do you? Hey, maybe you do? Any info is appreciated.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Hi Yoriko!
I'm Leslie, the experience designer for Get Satisfaction. Thanks for getting involved here. You've shared a lot of great information and I want to make sure that this spurns on great informative conversations.
I'd like to make some suggestions based on what we've seen work across GS in the recent past: Create a unique topic for each piece or parcel of conversation, that will make the info more digestible. For example each of the survey questions could be a topic (with a link to the survey so you can still get quantitative data). Creating questions for each of the improvement areas such as "What improvements would you like to see in Transportation (taking into consideration that we have a limited budget across many project categories)?" will keep the conversation focused. And these kinds of detailed discussions can happen in a VTA specific space, here: http://getsatisfaction.com/vta
We direct people to the VTA section by announcing it here in TransitCamp.
For our part, we're working on building up better resources to share what we've been learning about getting the most from these conversations. Look for the Satisfaction Builders community in near future. -
Inappropriate?Yes, we're working on a whole section of Get Satisfaction (the Builders community) that will be devoted to helping organizations get the most out of us, so please share any thoughts you have about how easy or hard it is to participate. Thanks!
I’m glad you are here!

Inappropriate?I ranked in. Interesting to see how many questions related to new HOV/HOT lanes. I'm completely against that strategy.
I’m thanking you for involving everyone.
