freelance concerns???
I gave Trazzler four pieces (#4269, 4717, 5913, 1798), applied for community manager and freelancer positions many months ago, and have heard nothing--I'm of the opinion this operation exploits writers, and when I saw the prizes for the summer contest I felt so even more (runners-up and editors' choice "winners" COMPETE to be paid $25-33 per submission?! --that's 18-23 cents per word and throwing in a photo for free!). Please remove my work from your site, and take me off your email list.

Inappropriate?Hi Sally,
I understand your frustration about communication. We recently launched a new feature that will let writers know when their trips have been read by an editor. Even so, we are a very small team of people dealing with a large volume of submissions and we read every trip that comes in... sometimes we are not able to respond as quickly as we would like. Sometimes, we hire writers several months after the original submission because of the delay. While we're doing the best we can, some delay is inevitable. Again, our apologies.
A few additional points:
(1) We don't require photos.
(2) Before we launched the contest in partnership with New York City, we hired 33 freelance writers.
(3) We are currently paying out 26% (compared to an average of 13% in traditional media) of our budget for editorial. We will continue to pay out a large percentage of our budget for professional writing.
(4) Word count per trip is 65-100 words.
(5) Contests are part of what we do and we understand that contests aren't for everyone.
We're doing our best to make Trazzler a great outlet for professional writers, up-and-coming writers, and for folks who choose to participate in contests -- I hope we can change your mind.

Inappropriate? To provide another perspective, I've written 2 freelance contracts for Trazzler, and the team has been very accommodating and easy to work with. I've done it mostly for my own exposure, but at 100 words a story, the stipend is appropriate.
I’m up.

Inappropriate?I see it as closer to 18-55 cents a word. The more succinct you can be, while still evoking the essence of a place, the better your pay. I'm not too good at being ultra succinct, but even so the pay is better than what is offered for many, many internet content sites.
And I get to write about places that excited me. I don't have to dress up a ho-hum spot. It's fun writing style for a decent price.
Also, the times when I haven't included a picture, doesn't seem to have mattered for the acceptance of that trip. There are so many free images on the web, that an image doesn't seem to be too big of an issue.
I’m happy with Trazzler
