Feature Request: extend the folders interface
While live-blogging an event a couple of days ago, I had two ideas that I wanted to share:
1.) extend the Folders interface with a shortcode, so that it is possible to send SMS directly to a folder.
For example, I have a folder named "live-blogging", I'll assign a shortcode to it (#1) and then just prefix all my messages with #1 to put them into that respective folder. Shortcodes are generated automatically (# sign and a number), based on the amount of folders.
The parsing functionality (# to hide message) is already there, so setting a flag to "move to folder X" instead of "hide message" should be possible.
2.) To further enhance the functionality of folders, every folder should have its own RSS feed. That way, you can set-up folders for events and then create livestreams on your blogs (parse the XML for that folder) without having to worry about old (or possibly: unrelated) messages showing up.

To implement the moving to a folder the only tricky thing is getting a shortcode for you to use. We originally considered using the folder name but that could be long, impractical and you might get it wrong.
The assigning yourself is possible but then I wonder why we'd ask you to think of one instead of perhaps us just generating one for you. How would you feel if we autogenerated a code for every folder when it is created such as #ab #bc etc etc.. This maybe might save you time having to think of one yourself.

Inappropriate? We actually had the RSS of each folder previously but had to take it out for various reasons, including we weren't sure if anyone would want it. It will likely make a return again possibly together with the assignment to folders via a shortcode.

Inappropriate?Paul,
thanks for the replies. What I actually meant with shortcode auto-generation was:
- the system should auto-generate a shortcode (like #1)
but: the system should still offer the user to assign their own shortcode
As far as RSS goes: I can tell you that I want it and if that is not enough, I am confident that others will want it too, as long as you show them how to use it.

I’m excited

Inappropriate?Shortcodes aren't necessary, save the huge expense and use the @ tagging idea posted in another suggestion. @folder would be easy enough. The system would see the @ and put the message in said folder. If the folder doesn't exist archive the message without the folder or create the folder on demand. This would work great for me.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Just added support for the @folder keywords, give it a spin. It currently doesn't create new folders only moves a message to the folder you've specified.
-
Inappropriate?Found a bug, only works with folder names of one word, if there's a space in the folder name it's broken for now.
-
Inappropriate? If the folder doesn't no folder is created. Is that how you intended? That's fine just wanted to make sure.
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate?Perhaps another bug? A messaging containing more than @ confuses the system and it doesn't get saved? That's an easy fix, only recognize the first or last one. First one would be the most obvious
-
Inappropriate?I think it got saved ok did it start with @twittr... It won't show in your inbox because it gets diverted from there direct to the other folder. If you're looking at that folder you should see it popi in. This raises a different issue with the inboxs which should show all messages regardless of where they go I presume.
-
Inappropriate? So many people use twitter and the @ for everyday conversations, perhaps the #folder would be better? People use the # for hash tags on twitter and denoting irc channels but again it would only need to accept the first #
-
Inappropriate?yes it was @twitter, beacause I have a folder of @twitter
-
Inappropriate?Another thought occurs to me, since all my posts are public, privacy options for a folder. Perhaps give everyone one private folder.
-
Inappropriate?re: no folder creation, that is correct because of the twitter conflict and possible other uses people may have for at symbols. Just for now don't have any folders which are the names of twitter people ;)
The problem with the hash also is that's already reserved to denote privacy of a message when TextStreaming. There's certainly some namespace collision problems which needs some thinking about by us. -
Inappropriate? You could do @@folder to create and put a message in the folder or @folder@ that gives you a delimiter for the folder name even
-
Inappropriate? Now works with folder names with spaces in.
Does the # command to make a message private do what you need when you have mostly a public feed?
To do privacy and a folder do this
@myfolder #my secret message
I’m happy about new features
-
Inappropriate?OK so how do you use a folder and privacy at the same time?
-
Inappropriate? Was it a Folder or a Contact you were targetting. Contacts arn't implemented yet with this mechanism but folders should work. Stay tuned for when contacts are done.
-
Inappropriate?I am glad that this idea has finally been implemented.
Now, for the next step, I would like to be able to assign shortcodes to messages.
say I have a folder called "Treasuremytext Events", I would not want to type "@Treasuremytext Events" all the time, but rather @abc1 and have that recognized as the shortcode.
