You should wait until the airline sends you your confirmation, then forward that to plans@tripit.com. It needs to come from you, rather than from the airline, as TripIt identifies the owner of the booking based on the email address from which it is sent.

Which airlines can I use TripIt with?

Do I just forward the email along when I get it? Or can I use one of those "cc: this receipt to..." features that some of the airlines provide when you check out?
