Add Flash Video to Streaming Servers
The topic of inlcuding Flash video in TRMS products has come up a few times on the forum. I understand from previous posts that it's cost-prohibitive to work in an enterprise-level encoder into the VOD servers. However, does anyone know a good reason why we couldn't install the basic Adobe Flash Media Encoder onto our web streaming machines? I believe that Viewcast (maker of the Osprey capture card in those servers) makes a piece of software called Simulstream ($500) which would allow the capture card in those machines to create BOTH wmv and flash streams. Right now when we attempt to run the flash encoder on those machines, there is a conflict.
The end result: we would like to include a Flash window for each of our three channels embedded into our new website design, and keep providing the wmv stream that's controlled through Cablecast. Short of putting a new machine online to do this, does anyone have any advice/caveats/etc. on doing this?

Inappropriate?Hey Shawn,
I'd imagine that you're getting a conflict in flash encoder because the TRMS software is currently using the capture card.
If you'd like to try it, you'll have to stop the CablecastDeviceControl service, which will release the card so other software can use it.
We've never tried the Simulstream software, so I can't offer any advice there, but I'd imagine you'd have to do the same thing (stopping the device control service). Do they have a demo version that you can try before dropping $500 on it?

I’m curious

Inappropriate? Thanks John. I'm going to see if I can contact Viewcast to see if we can get a demo. Their website isn't very clear about the availability of the software. The flash encoder does work correctly on the server when we stop the cablecast device control service.
Do you know which model Osprey card is installed in these servers? I checked the device manager but the best I can come up with is 'Osprey-2X0 AV Stream Video Device'. Thanks!
I’m thankful

Here's a link to the Simulscan software: http://store.viewcast.com/detail.aspx... -
It's an Osprey 230. -
Inappropriate?Simulstream works great in the Viewcast Niagara products - they can simultaneously stream Flash, RealMedia, WindowsMedia and MPEG4 (QuickTime).
In the posts about 1 year ago, concerning Flash-on-demand, Andrew Starks said: "Frankly, I'd like to see H264 thrown in Flash 9. It's a better codec." Now that H.264 is supported, and you (TRMS) don't have to deal with On2 - can we have a streaming solution, at least as an option, to stream live in multiple formats, including Flash, and not just WindowsMedia?

Inappropriate?Hey, thought I'd give a quick update to this thread.
I contacted the folks at Viewcast. It turns out that Simulstream is embedded in the Osprey 230 card, but needs to be activated in order to work. We downloaded the driver software from the Viewcast website, and ran the executable on the streaming server. The setting for activating Simulscan (in 'evaluation' mode) is tucked away in one of the tabs in that program.
Once this was activated, sure enough, we were able to continue to use the streaming server as designed by TRMS (wmv), PLUS provide a Flash stream at the same time. It did not add a big burden onto the CPU or memory. Of course, in 'evaluation' mode, the Viewcast logo was plastered over our video, so we turned it off for now. But it showed that this is a doable solution for us.
Getting Simulstream registrations for each of our three streaming servers will cost us $1,500.00, so right now we're still considering adding this functionality. But I can say with confidence that it can be done!
I’m wishing for a capital budget

Inappropriate?Does that include the cost of flash streaming server, or do you already have that?

Inappropriate?Not including the server.
