Cabling question.
What cables do I need to connect my Carousel bulletin board system to a Nexus? I am setting up my carousel system, and have just installed it in the rack. I want to feed the Bulletins to the Nexus system that's feeding the cable channel. What cables do I need for this connection? What output port(s) do I connect to (for audio and video) in the back of the Carousel? Thanks!

Inappropriate?Hi John,
The Carousel QuickStart guide (found on our Documentation page) has pictures and descriptions of the video/audio outputs on the back of all of the various Carousel servers.
In the Carousel 5.2.3 QuickStart guide, section 3.1.2 (page 25) describes the process on connecting the video outputs
I hope this helps,

Inappropriate?Okay, it's been a while since I've been able to get back to wiring my Carousel to my Nexus. I don't mean to sound critical, but the documentation you referred me to is not very helpful. On page 25 of the Quickstart guide it tells me to connect to the "video output marked ’Composite Video Out’ in figure 2.4 on page 17." However, if you go to page 17 there is NOTHING labeled "Composite Video Out". The diagram and labeling on page 17 are not very helpful. Some of the ports on the back of the carousel are labeled in that diagram, but some are not. None of the ports is labeled "Composite Video Out". I could guess, but I'm hesitant to do so. I need a better diagram, or someone to interpret which of the ports on the back of my Carousel I should use to connect video and audio outputs from the Carousel to my Nexus. I'm guessing I'm not the first one to do this, there must be a website, or a description somewhere that says "you connect this kind of a cable to this video port on the back of the carousel to the Nexus, and this (these) cable(s) from this (these) audio ports on the back of the Carousel to the Nexus".
Thanks, JR

Inappropriate?Hi John,
My apologies for the mis-labeled diagrams, I've gone ahead and corrected the documentation, which will be available in the next release of Carousel.
For now, however, you should replace the words "Composite Video Out" on page 25 with the words "TV Out." They refer to the same thing, we were just a bit sloppy it seems in keeping our nomenclature consistent.
Technically, you've got three options for video outputs. On the diagram on page 17, they're listed in the second column:
- VGA Out
- DVI-I Out
- TV Out
I'm not familiar with what the video inputs are on the Nexus, but odds are it uses Composite video, which is labeled as "TV Out" in the diagram. (The other outputs, VGA and DVI-I, generally need a scan-converter before they can be used in a cable-tv video installation.)
As a note, the "TV Out" connection on the Carousel unit uses an standard RCA-style connector. If the Nexus uses BNC connectors, you'll need an RCA-to-BNC adapter.
As far as audio goes, the Carousel unit has a standard "mini" stereo line out jack, labeled "Line Out" in the diagram on page 17. (It's the green jack.) Again, I'm not sure what audio inputs the Nexus has on it, so you may need to adapt from the mini connector to whatever the Nexus requires.
Again, I'm sorry it wasn't clear enough, I hope this has been helpful.

Inappropriate?I think I now have my Carousel cabled properly (did you also put a picture of that little dongle cable in your diagram on page 25?) But there's no way to tell if the cabling is right, because we can't see any bulletins on the cable channel when we cut over to the Carousel.
I hooked up a PC display, mouse and keyboard, and logged in to Windows on the Carousel to test the output, but nothing displays on a PC display attached to the VGA port either, unless I boot the Carousel in VGA mode. As soon as I set the Carousel Windows display properties to 1024 x 768 (which was what it was set at to begin with), the attached PC display goes black, as if it is not getting a signal from the Carousel.
I'm not sure if the Display Engine is actually running. It's in the Startup folder, and it loads and starts when the machine boots, or when I click on it manually. But even though there are bulletins set to run, the Display Engine never takes over the PC display to show the bulletins. All I can see when logged in locally to the Carousel is the Windows Desktop.
So, I am not seeing bulletins running on the cable channel, nor on the local display connected to the Carousel VGA port. All I can guess is that the Display Engine is not running properly on the Carousel. The Display Engine was running and showing bulletins on a PC display in my computer lab two weeks ago, before I unplugged everything from the Carousel to move it upstairs to the rack (and connect it to the Nexus).
As an aside It would be nice (very nice) if I could run the windows desktop over the network connection (is there a way to enable Remote Desktop?) because having to lug a PC Display, keyboard and mouse upstairs and crawl behind the rack to plug them in is difficult.
Any ideas why I'm not seeing bulletins? Any ideas why I can't see anything on a PC display attached to the VGA port unless I'm booting in VGA mode (640 x 480)?
Thanks for your help in this ongoing saga...jr

Inappropriate?John, I think you should open a support ticket and have one of our tech's take a look. I think:
1.) Your Display Engine might be tuned to a channel that does not exist
2.) You need to set your Carousel's graphics card to 'clone mode'
3.) Maybe your Carousel's graphics card is bad
4.) You can use VNC (vnc.trms.com) to view Carousel over the network. It's already on Carousel, put it on your desktop and run the VNC viewer. Same password as the default password for FrontDoor.
Our support guys can help you figure it out!
