Carousel Account Permissions for setting up zones
Hi. I just want to make sure I have this right. There is currently no way to give users a way to set up zones within their own channels without giving them Admin privileges?
I need to be able to give my users full control of their channel only, while restricting their access to other channels. Please tell me it's possible.
Thanks,
Megan

Hello Megan,
You are correct, currently there is no way to give a user access to setup zones on one channel only. The Setup-Global System Configuration is the access right that gives user the ability to access the Configuration menu, which allows for the editing of all channels.

This is a common request, however, very difficult for us to implement as discussed in this thread:

We will keep you updated on this topic.

I’m hopeful we will find a solution for this!

Inappropriate?Megan,
I have been trying to work through very similar situations. What I have found that seems to be a close to working answer is this. I or "the administration" creates and controls channels - the user cannot "re-design" channels. BUT, with the way Carousel is by design allows you to authorize a good amount of control via Zones. So, what I do is design the channel and then create a user role with strict rights for Zones. Then I assign this role to zones on Specified Channels.
IE: I created Channel1 with Zone1, Zone2, & Zone3. Now, i also have channel2,channel3, and channel4 but this user is only to use Channel1 & said zones. So I assign the rights for this user my created role and allow it only on Zone1 (2&3 also) on Channel1. That user logs in and only sees the Zones on channel1 this way.
Now, doing this does suck if that user wants to or needs to redesign channels, but this works. I do not like how there is no way to control rights better through channels, but I had to come up with an answer on my own and this was it.
Man I hope this all made sense.

Inappropriate?Jesse's reply reflects exactly how we originally designed Carousel's multi-zone feature to work. A signage administrator has control over channels, and that administrator delegates control of zones to users. The intent was that users aren't assigned a channel, per se, they're assigned zones, which may be placed on any channel as the administrator sees fit.
Since zones can be shared across multiple channels, we didn't want users to be able to make changes that might have an affect on other channels that they don't have access to (changing zone size, for example, could look okay on one channel, but look terrible on another channel). Those sorts of changes would need to be routed through an administrator, since the administrator would presumably keep track of how all the zones are used, and would catch any unforeseen problems that might be created by the change.
That was our intention, anyway.
That being said, however, definitely up-vote the topic that Jennifer shared earlier if you think it should work the other way.

Inappropriate?Jesse/John,
Jesse, That is what I am doing also. I give users permissions for zones, which is fine for most users. But some of our departments on campus are EXTREMELY tech savvy and they should have total control over there channel, so they can do testing, design, and redesign whenever they like without having me as an obstacle. The way we are using the system departments on campus are purchasing channels and they can choose to share content if they want, have the campus-wide design, or have their own. Also I don't dictate what the content is, or who has access.
If I could give admin privileges for a specific channel, then tech savvy departments (in this case CalIT2) could determine their own permissions settings for their channel as well as determine their own zone settings. For them this would be especially useful sense they are trying to test the interactivity functions of the software which is very different from they way that other departments are using their signage.
Also, it is a real headache for me to have to set up numerous accounts for a large number of departments. The idea of using one account for a group of people is unrealistic because it is important to identify who-specifically created a bulletin. (I'm grumbling about this, but I supposes that if you did have this feature, then I would have to teach everyone how to set up accounts, so I'm not sure that is any easier.) = )
John, it would be nice if you could build a little more control into Carousel to make this fine-grained control of channels possible. Maybe it wouldn't be for all users, but only in special cases.
Thanks for the information.
Megan
I’m happy.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the input Megan, we do appreciate it! :)
As to the headache of managing tons of users, FrontDoor can be configured to use an ActiveDirectory/LDAP server for user management. You've still got to configure roles for users, but at least you don't have to create them in two different places. Just a thought, if you happen to have an LDAP server on campus.
