Carousel Stops Working
We are having a problem with one of our servers on our new carousel system. We are running Carousel through our Cablecast Pro server and outputting to four public access television channels. About once a week, for no apparent reason, one of our display servers quits working and the windows desktop is displayed. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem?

Inappropriate?I'd be very interested to know what version you are running of both Cablecast and Carousel. I have two other clients complain of this recently. We thought at the time it might be from power hits, but I'm a little skeptical of that. When I checked the event logs, I did not find anything particularly unusual.
Both of my customers are on Carousel 5. One is running Cablecast 4.7. The other is on 4.6. I'm not sure of the patch revision number off the top of my head.
Here's a trick if you have the time or inclination. Take a camera on a tripod and point it at a monitor with tha Carousel display. Either enable the clock display on all pages or put a digital clock nearby the display so it's in the shot. Then run the camera out to your server encoder and just let it run until you have the problem again. Then search back through the video and you'll be able to determine if it was a power hit, exact time of failure, if an error came up on the screen, if the system rebooted when it failed, etc...
The drawback, of course, is it ties up your encoder and will eat a lot of disk space during the test. You can also use a VHS deck in 6-hour mode to record overnights or a DVDR with the bit rate set low.

Inappropriate?I had a similar problem with Cablecast a couple of months ago on one of my channels were once a week it would change from the bulletin board to the desktop. In my case what I found was that Quick Time updates was launching it self automatically and when the update window opened it caused the desktop to be displayed. So now I run my up dates manually and disabled the auto updates. So you may want to see if you have any programs on your system that auto execute.

Inappropriate?I've also had problems with "auto updates" taking the carousel display out.
Turn them all off quicktime, windows, etc...

Inappropriate?HUH! Although I do not doubt the issue being auto-updates, I've never experienced a display engine shutdown due to an auto-update.
I have Windows auto-update on 4 on-air machines, and Quicktime on 2. I've seen the Quicktime auto-update screen when I've activates the local monitor, but it has never shut down the display engine. And, Windows auto-update has never caused a problem.

Inappropriate?I've had lockups on older versions of Carousel with auto updates, as well as having the upgrade notice in XP poking on top of the actual bulletins. Quicktime, Windows, and iTunes are all guilty, and once I shut off all automatic updates, it seemed to take care of the issue.

Inappropriate?I shut off the auto update on quick time and have not had any problems since.

Inappropriate?I had this problem with our carousel player unit as well. The problem for me was because Cablecast, carousel and the video server were connected individually to a network switch about 50ft+ from the equipment (too long). As soon as I installed the switch in the same rack and re-connected the equipment (6ft cable), the problem went away.
