DVD Import Software
I have had some trouble with ripping some dvds for playback on my server. The DVD Import Software starts to work and then I get an "Incorrect Function" error. What does that mean? The disk plays fine on the computer and in consumer dvd players. I have tried both Import version 1.2 and 4.50 and the same thing.

Inappropriate?Strange. Don't think we've seen that one before.
Does the error happen on all DVDs? Just a few? Just one? Is there any more information in the error message that you get?

Inappropriate? The error does not happen on all DVDs. There is a series that comes in every week and just two weeks ago this started to happen with this one particular show. I have had this and other errors in the past but I would try a second or third time and it would work out fine. But this DVD just does not want to work.
"Incorrect Function" is the only thing in the message box. -
Inappropriate?Hmm. My first thought is that it's a faulty burn on that disc, but the fact that other discs with the error eventually work is confusing to me. I would expect it to either always work or never work.
Have you tried it on a different computer? Maybe the DVD drive itself is having problems with that particular disc or brand of discs?
If all else fails, perhaps you could send us that DVD so we could take a look at it? We might be able to determine if it is our fault or not.

Inappropriate?More things... Where in the import process does the error happen? Right away? During any particular step in the process? What does the status bar at the bottom of the program say when it errors?

Inappropriate?Scott, another one of our developers did a bit of research, and came up with this:
quote:It seems that this "Incorrect function" error is common on some systems while reading DVDs. Possibly it is a bad cable or bad drive, but there are a few other things to check:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315350/ describes that certain versions of DVD recording software can cause this to occur. (It seems more than just Roxio can cause this such as Nero or even Norton Internet Security... try uninstalling these.)
Possibly the media he's using is a +/-RW disc in a DVD burner and could try:
Right-click on the drive with the problem in Explorer Choose Properties Click on the Recording Tab then uncheck the "Enable CD Recording On This Drive" box
Also, it is possible the disc is a +R or +RW, and the DVD drive can't read that type of media (the drives in every machine we ship from Tightrope supports +R media, but not all do).
All this implies that sending us the DVD will not help.
Hope this helps some.

Inappropriate?OK I think I narrowed the problem to stuff coming from a particular station that shares programming.
I can watch the program fine on the computer and a home dvd player but when I use the Import software It gets stuck at Encoding mpeg audio... About 6 minutes left.
The DVD shows up as DVD_VR
Also Under Title 1: NTSC video, MPEG1 audio is
PGC 1: 00:32:45
PGC 2: 00:32:45
There is only one 32min program on the disk.
Is there an issue with DVD_VR and dvd import?
When I run this and it does not work windows will eventually tell me that I am low on virtual memory and I am running over 1gig in this machine. -
Inappropriate?Interesting... Our DVDImport guy is out of the office today, but I'll forward your findings on to him. Hopefully we'll have some more ideas for you early next week.
Thanks for all your investigating!

Inappropriate?I emailed our DVD guy, and here's what he said:

Since it is MPEG audio, you can switch the option in the "Options..." screen to use the "Legacy" audio processing, which will simply copy the audio track with no level adjustment, this option is there for discs with problematic audio and may resolve the situation you are seeing.
> The DVD shows up as DVD_VR
That's probably something their recorder always sets for a name.

> 00:32:45

It probably has a program chain for all things recorded on the disc and one for each separately, so for a single recording it would look the same, like you see.
So, I guess try switching to Legacy audio processing and see if that helps at all.
