DVD Import will not accept Disks made in Toast 9
Why can't DVD Import handle a disk made in Toast?
What I mean by this is when I try to import a disk made in toast (Toast 9) it tells me there is copy protection. the message is - Read Failed Because Sector is Encrypted. When I go through all of the preferences in Toast there is not any protection tab that is checked. And the Help section Toast doesn't even mention protection or encryption.
I can use any other program and extract the vid file from a DVD except Tightrope DVD Import.
This is annoying cause the only DVDs we can import are ones we make in our hardware DVD recorders which as you know only work in - Real Time. If I could make a disk in toast that would work programs could go up sooner.

Inappropriate?Hi Patrick,
I suspect it might be a setting in Toast. We have a member who submits DVDs she creates with Final Cut Pro/DVD Studio Pro, and we get the same exact message every time when we try to use DVD import to bring her programs into our server.
Now, we use Studio Pro all the time for our own stuff and never have a problem. So I conclude that it must be a setting in her software that's causing DVD import to think the disc is copy-protected. Unfortunately I can't give you a solution because we haven't been able to help her solve it either! -
Inappropriate?I really wish it was that simple but - Every other DVD extraction application - IE - Mac the Ripper, Visual hub, Handbrake, ETC.. will extract a disk from Toast as is. with no errors, or protection messages.
So by that rational it has to be Tightrope's application. They had to have written some code in there that disables the ability to put a copyrighted disk in there so no one will air "Die Hard" on cable access :)
The code they wrote is too good and it stops Toast disks as well.
The DVD studio pro route adds tons of extra time and steps that aren't worth it. Especially cause the Toast encoder is fast. It's all about speed. -
Inappropriate?I can assure you we have done nothing to detect and block commercial DVDs from being ripped. We simply read each sector from the DVD with standard operating system calls.
I'm not sure about VisualHub, but the other applications you mention are designed to rip commercial DVDs, and bypass any copy protection. That being said, however, I'm also sure Toast isn't adding copy protection to the discs you've created. Something else is causing our DVD import software to get that error when reading the disc.
Without getting your disc into Tightrope to test, I can think of two things:
- Make sure the DVD drive has its region code set
- If it is all about speed, does your burning software have a mode to write to files (it might be called filesystem or VIDEO_TS folder)? If so, you can import directly from a VIDEO_TS folder off the hard disk, without having to go through the burning step. That might save you a lot of time.
If possible, it would be worthwhile to get a copy of a disc that is not working into Tightrope, so I can take a look at it, contact support for information on sending it to us. -
Inappropriate?Scott, I can put the VIDEO_TS folder of one of these discs up on our FTP server for you to grab, if you would like-- let me know.
