Encoded files disappearing
It's happened a couple of times now...when I encode a file from a DVD or from a DV tape, I sometimes get an error message when I try to rename the file. The error states that I don't have permission to rename it...to check if it's write-protected or if it's in use by another program. I double-clicked the file to try to view it in Windows Media Player and the player said it could not play it. When I went back to the E drive, the file icon had entirely disappeared.
If I set Autopilot to record a first run of a DVD or a DV, I don't have a problem...just if I do it manually through the force matrix.

Inappropriate?David,
Just to be sure, where are you trying to re-name the file, through the web interface or through Windows? -
Inappropriate?Hi Chad - just through Windows, directly on the SX4.
-
Inappropriate?Sorry David, I'm still getting used to forum etiquette. I should have asked you what version you're running in my first post, just so I can be sure. :) Since this is the force menu we shouldn't be dealing with an erroneous move, but just to be safe are you moving the files normally after encoding? (automated encoding from CC) Thanks!
-Chad -
Inappropriate? We're running 4.7.5 build 32. And I'm not really sure what you mean by moving the files. Normally what I'll do is just route whatever device I want to use to one of the encoders - I'm sorry I can't tell you if this has happened with one or the other or both - then set the encoder to record through the force matrix. I've got the server set up so that anything I encode either manually or through the record channel goes to drive e on the server and anything ingested using the ingest software goes to drive f.
After manually stopping the recording process, I go to rename the blank file on the e drive of the server. It says I don't have permission to do so or the file is in use. Then it seems to magically transfer itself to the island of missing server files.

Inappropriate?David,
Alright, here's what I know. Commands sent to a device both through AUtopilot and through the force menu should be tracked in the XML file that pertains to the control module controlling the encoder. This does get cleared out every time Autopilot is sent. The next time you notice this happen if you could send a copy of that XML file to me at chad@trms.com that would be very much appreciated. If you're unsure which control module it is, let me know. Thanks!

Inappropriate?Hi Chad -
I've got a show encoding through the force matrix as we speak...and my I.T. guy is here to send you the file you're requesting. Do you want me to send it only if it fails?
DG -
Inappropriate? Why don't you send it either way so if it doesn't fail I can have a good example to compare it to.

Inappropriate?Hi, Chad, I'm the other Dave at SATV, the IT person. I watched Dave G. finish an encode the other day, which was successfull.
I noted that the SXEncoder uses a blank file name (.mpg). Is that by design? Would it not be better to have it be saved as encode1, encode2, etc. (or untitled, untitled1...)? The XP console on the SX is normally set to not display file extensions ("hide files for known file types") and it is disconcerting to see a blank name with an icon when renaming.
This next question is probably too big to answer in this thread but: we do many related file operations through XP's Explorer. Is there a workflow we are missing?
I’m uncertain

Inappropriate?David,
If this was done from the force menu, which I believe it was, then the record command would enter whatever gets typed in the field from the record drop-down box. You guys know if this is the case?
-Chad -
Inappropriate?I guess I'm not following...the drop down box says record, and we're off and running - I'm not sure if there's anywhere to type anything unitl the file is finished. Once that's done, I right click on the icon to rename it.
-
Inappropriate?OK. I encoded some bars from the autopilot matrix/force device on encoder1. There was no file name in the drop down actions menu: just none, stop, movefile, record, recordstop. Screenshot enclosed.
I’m uncertain
-
Inappropriate?I think what Chad is talking about with the name in the 'drop down' box is where you put the show ID
Hit the green arrow so its pointing down, and thats where you enter a file key.

The file recorded to my SX encoder will now be named 'test.mpeg'
Hope it helps
-ray -
Inappropriate?AHA! As usual, Ray, you're on the mark.
I don't know if this will keep the files from disappearing, but they should be easier to track if I name them beforehand. Thanks!

Inappropriate?Sorry, I should have been clearer. Drop down box is a bad way to describe it. Immediately before the drop down box is a little green arrow which will create... a drop down box. :) (Well heck, that's what I call it!)
So you'll hit the green arrow, choose record, enter your show name in the new drop down box, and then click Device Only (or preview monitor or whichever output). Now the show will be recorded with a name!
-Chad -
Inappropriate?OK, I've nosed around and found the dropdown arrow on the encoder actions row. Entered a filename in the showid field, and got a file with encoded bars under the name I entered. I think this does it for now, I have sent a screenshot to Dave G..
I’m confident
